Memories

Memories... they can be made at major events and in small unexpected moments. We have been busy making lots of memories as a family these past few months. Some of them are the traditional ones new parents make as their "babies" grow up and pass many milestones, others are unplanned times that end up being so special, and we know we'll never forget them.

After having said that about unplanned memories, we have also begun to learn the importance of being intentional about making them. Just a few weeks ago we were enjoying a beautiful sunny Sunday (which, amazingly, we've had lots of this past month) and we were itching to get out and soak it in. So, we put Ava in the car and drove a short distance to Kent Station. It's a small outdoor area with some restaurants and shops, a movie theatre and a coffee shop with the yummiest selection of chocolates to make the best hot chocolate or mocha around! We walked around with Ava, enjoying our drinks. Ava was fascinated by a "wawa" fountain - there's nothing quite like experiencing the joy in the little things through the eyes of a child. It was only a one hour trip, but it was quality family time - intentional memory making! It was a great reminder to us to do more of that as Ava grows up.

Last time we blogged, it was Thanksgiving, and Ava had just learned to walk! Now, at the end of February, she is running and climbing on everything. How quickly things change. :)

Here's our attempt to catch up our family and friends on life at the Knapp home - lots of memories made!

Image Ava loves to sit up on chairs and on the couch to read books. She points to everything and knows the names of lots of things. Her vocabulary is growing daily!

ImageThe week before Valentine's Day, Connor, (Ava's best bud who spends the day with us every Tuesday and every other Wednesday), and Ava helped roll out and decorate sugar cookies. I had imagined a fun and engaging activity for these two active toddlers, but I would definitely recommend trying this with older kids! :) Ava did like eating the dough, and Connor loved rolling it out.

Catching Up

Happy Thanksgiving! It's been too long since our last post, so here are a few pictures and video clips from the past month. We have a full on "walker" in our house now, so life is busy!

Celebrating Ava!

Before writing this post, I looked back through pictures and read through the journal I kept while I was pregnant. It all seems so long ago, yet at the same time, just like yesterday. I found these words I had copied down from Psalm 139:13 - 16 (adapted from The Message version). It seems a fitting way to start out...

Oh yes, you shaped this baby, first inside, then out; you are forming her in my womb.

I thank you, High God - you're breathtaking!

Body and soul, this new life is being marvously made!

I worship in adoration - what a creation!

You know her inside and out, you know every bone in her body;

You know exactly how this baby is being made, bit by bit, how she is being sculpted from nothing to something.

Like an open book, you're watching this new life grow from conception to birth;

all the stages of her life are spread out before you,

The days of her life all prepared before even one day has been lived.

These words take on new meaning now that Ava has arrived and we're celebrating her first birthday. What a blessing! I am truly amazed at God's creation - she is marvously made! We feel incredibly blessed to have had such a sweet first year with Ava. She is a joy! This Top Ten List is an attempt to fill you in on highlights of the year and to capture glimpses of her emerging personality. Enjoy!

First, a look back to her first week... I couldn't resist starting out with a few of her newborn pictures.

Mommy and Daddy's Top Ten List for Ava

1. One of the things we remember most about Ava's arrival was how alert she was. From the moment she was born, she was looking around, taking everything in. She even looked right into our eyes. What a surreal experience to look into the face of the child you've carried the past nine months. A miracle!

2. Laughter! Ava has brought such joy to our home. She is such a happy baby. We never get tired of her giggles and laughter. It's hard to imagine what our home was like before Ava! I tried to attach a video clip of her first laugh at 3 months old, but it wouldn't work. We have it attached to a posting from January 2009.

3. Ahh... Ava sleeping. Ava has never been a good napper (which has driven me almost completely crazy), but she is an awesome nighttime sleeper. She's slept at least 8 hour stretches since she was 12 weeks old, and for the past 5 months, she's consistently slept 12 hours at night! For the first four months, we swaddled Ava up nice and tight. We used to call her our little "Ava Burrito." My dad thought it looked like we were putting her in a straight jacket. :)
Image
4. Bathtime is one of Ava's favorite times of the day. She loves to splash everywhere and play with her toys. Now that she's eating a lot of food on her own, bathtime is a must at the end of the day. We often times find food from throughout the day stuck in the most unusual places!
Image
5. Probably Ava's most stricking feature is her big blue eyes. They are so full of life. Thanks, Daddy, for the long eyelashes! How in the world are we going to resist these eyes?
Image
6. Ava takes after both of us with her love of reading. She loves to pull the books of her bookshelf and go through each book, turning the pages and pointing at things. During diaper changes, which happen to be one of Ava's least favorite things, the one thing that will often distract her is a book... forget the toys!
Image
7. Animals... Ava LOVES all animals from birds to dogs. She gets so excited she can hardly contain herself! Where she got this love, I do not know. For those of you who know me, she did not get her love of animals from mommy. :) When we went to the zoo with my mom in September, her favorite was the aquarium. She kept trying to reach out and touch the fish as they swam by.

8. Ava is always curious about the world around her. She often crawls over to the window, which hapens to be at the perfect height, to watch what's going on outside.
Image

9. These next two picture will look familiar to those of you who have kids. Into everything! Gone are the days when I put Ava on a blanket and she would play with her toys without going anywhere. Trying to get dinner ready is a whole different experience now! We can hardly leave our shoes out, or they might get "eaten." :) It's a little crazy at our house with Ava mobile, but it sure is fun! 10. The hair! Ava was born with a full head of dark hair, and I don't think she's lost a single hair! We had to trim the back when she was just a few months old to avoid a mullet, and just last week Ava finally had her first official, real haircut. Nothing fancy, just a little trim. She did great! She was totally enthralled with the blowdryers and cool lighting that she didn't even notice her hair was getting clipped.

A MAJOR D.I.Y. Project = busy days at the Knapp House

When we bought our house in May of 2006, we walked through it the night we first got our keys and talked about all of the "little" projects that needed to be done in the house. It has good bones, we told ourselves, and these little projects won't be that big of a deal. HA! Fast forward three years later: new molding, check; new window trim, check; new door jams and doors, check; every square inch painted (interior and exterior), check; new blinds installed, check... oh the list could go on! Our lastest "almost" check off the grand list was redoing the 3/4 master bathroom. I say "almost" because we've only completed phase one. Phase two to be completed once we have two things: time and money! With the many D.I.Y. projects we've done in this house, we've discovered that most projects take twice as much time and money than you originally estimated.

So, since August, Tim has been working away at the bathroom. It started with some nasty demo to tear out lots of tile. Then there was some plumbing that had to be done, a new shower installed, tile floor, and new fixtures. Here are a few pictures to catch up you up.

ImageDemolition begins... we were sad to see the ugly gray tile with blue flowers gone!

ImageThe mask was a must, you should have seen the dust flying.

Image Gray and blue tile - GONE!

Image There are no words... our bathroom was out of commission for a few weeks.

Image Our third attempt at a paint color. I think we found a winner! This painting job was done late at night while Ava slept.

Image Tim's first ever attempt at tiling. We chose a chocolate brown, leather-looking tile. It turned out awesome - Tim did such an amazing job.

ImageNew shower and fixtures. We got rid of the shower door and opted for a shower curtain. I never want to clean a shower door again!

Image The finished tile floor.

ImageNew framed mirror and molding.
Phase two, as you can see, will be the counter top, sink, and cabinets. We're planning to go white with the cabinets to off-set the dark flooring. The counter top will have some gold and chocolate brown in it to tie everything together.
In the spirit of home improvement and projects, I had a small project going of my own. We have a long hallway in our house, and we recently put up a collage of pictures to fill it in. In one of the frames, I collected pictures of our grandparents when they were young and our own families when Tim and I were growing up, and put together a sort of family "tree." I think it turned out really well and will be something special for us to treasure.

Summer 2009 Update

We're still here! It's been over a month since our last post, so finally here is our family update. July was a busy month with our ten day vacation to Nampa, Idaho to visit my parents. My brother, Scott, even came up from Denver to stay for a long weekend. It was so much fun to be together as a family. We played lots of games, did some relaxing, and even spent a few days in McCall, Idaho. We even managed to squeeze in time with good friends!

Since we've been back, things haven't slowed down at all. Tim went right back to work and is now beginning demo in our master bathroom, just so he'll have something to do during the next few weekends! At the end of August, he is taking a one week international trip to Colombia, so hopefully phase one of the bathroom remodel will be finished by then.

I have been soaking up my summer days with Ava with trips to the park, storytime at the library, and beginning last week, swimming lessons! This summer Ava has done lots of growing up. While in Idaho, she got her first tooth and started clapping her hands. Since we've been home she's mastered the "army crawl" and can wave "hi" and "bye-bye" to most anyone... even her bathtub toys at the end of bathtime! She is such a joy, and I feel so blessed to be home with her. Starting in September, I'll be going back to work halftime in a job share position. I'm really looking forward being back in the classroom (a job I LOVE!) and getting to spend time at home with Ava half the week. The best of both worlds! Enjoy the pictures - video clips are at the end. For those of you on Facebook, lots of these pictures will look familiar.
