The Trip of a Lifetime Part 3

When we left Oahu we flew to Kauai for a little lovers holiday.  We had never been to this island and were very excited.  Kauai is the most beautiful of the three island's I've been to. But for the best Hawaiian experince Maui is still the place.  Kauai is green as far as the eye can see.  It's called the garden island and that is definitely a name that fits.  We stayed on the North shore in Princeville.  There is only one main road to get around the island so the traffic can get pretty heavy, but we never waited more than a few minutes.  After we got to the hotel we went grocery shopping.  First we stopped at the Chevron and had the best burgers ever!  That's right- I said the gas station serves the best burgers on the island:)  Afterwards we headed across the parking lot to the one and only store in Princeville.  While there we ran into a girl that Jeff grew up with who now lives on the island.  It's such a small world isn't it.  After we bought our crazy expensive groceries we headed back to the hotel and watched a movie-Taken 2(horrible) and turned in for the night.

The next day was Sunday so we went to church in Hanalei.  There were tons of church's all over Kauai- but only two Mormon churches.  The church has a little blue tin roof so it was easy to find.  Every Sunday in Hanalei there are more visitors at church then there are members of the ward.  After church we drove to Ke E beach to see where the trail head was for our hike that wee.  Then we drove back to our resort and walked down to the beach-Pu'u Poa.

Monday  was one of my favorite days!!  We got to go on a helicopter ride. If you go to Kauai this is a must because a huge part of the island is privately owned and not accessible, so the only way to see it is in the air.  We got to the helipad early so we decided to drive to the end of the road and see where it went.  There was a very cool lava rock pier that we got to explore.  There were lots of crabs and some people fishing and tons of baby roosters.  Then we headed to the helicopter office to start our flight.  This was so so so worth the money!! We flew with Safari Helicopters.  Our pilot was Tom and he knew everything about the island.  We got to see the wettest spot on Earth that recieves over 400 inches of rain a year.  Everything was super gorgeous!!!  Afterwards we drove to Po'ipu beach to check it out and then went to Secret beach.  On our way back from the beach we turned the wrong way and ended up at a perfect spot to watch a whole bunch of surfers.  It was winter time when we were there so you really didn't see a ton of surfers because the tides are too high.

Tuesday we hiked part of the Kalalau Trail.  This is an 11 mile long trail along the Napali Coast.  We hiked two miles of it to the beach and then another two miles to Hanakapi'ai Falls.  8 miles round trip so it took several hours but was by far the best hiking we have done!!  Everything is green, sweet smelling, fresh, cool, gorgeous!!  It was like a jungle- so lush and green.  This area use to be inhabited so we even saw a cool old stone fireplace.  The falls were so beautiful.  Jeff was brave enough to swim in the pool at the foot of the falls.  It was freezing cold- so I sat that one out.   At the beach there were tons and tons of cairns that people had made and we saw two ferral cats.  After the hike we stopped at the beach that is at the bottom of the trailhead called KeE beach.   Then we drove to Hanalei and rented snorkle gear for Jeff and I got a shave ice from the Wishing Well truck.  The bottom was macadamia nut icecream- so divine!!  We drove home to shower and rest and then went to the Kilauea Fish Market and stopped at the Kilauea lighthouse and lookout to watch the sunset.

Wednesday we went to Tunnels beach so Jeff could snorkel.  This is the beach where Bethany Hamilton the surfer had her arm ripped off by a shark out beyond the reef.  The reef makes Tunnels a great snorkel spot because the waters are calm.  After we were there for a while we decided to drive back to KeE beach but snorkeling wasn't allowed there.  Next we stopped at Ha'ena Beach Park and Jeff got some awesome wave action in the giant waves until the lifegaurd made him come in.  I adore the ocean- but not so much getting into it because it's cold, dark, unknown and the water pops my contacts out so I got a lot of beach lounging in instead.  Across the street was a giant dry cave that we explored for a bit before then moving on to Kephui beach for more snorkeling.  On the way back we tried to find Lumahai beach and at first we couldn't but ended up at these cool lava rocks.  We then did find the trail down to the beach and watched a boy beach surfing and saw more giant waves.  Near our hotel was an area called Queen's Bath that is a natural lava pool when the tide is low- which it wasn't so we just walked around and explored here.  Finally we drove to get more shave ice from the grocery store and then to Anini beach for a little more snorkeling.

Thursday was our last day there so in the morning we packed up and checked out and then drove to Opaeka'a Falls look out in Wailua on our way to Waimea Canyon.  This is another DO NOT MISS thing on the island.  They call it the grand canyon of the Pacific and it looks like a whole other world.  We stopped at all of the lookouts along the way and took pictures.  We collected some red dirt rocks.  There were roosters everywhere.  Back in the 90's following a hurricane a whole bunch of roosters were set free so now you will see them all over- hundreds.  At the top of the canyon we got some awesome pictures of us where the clouds were actually beneath us.  It was breath taking.  On our way to the airport we stopped at the ABC store to buy some soveniers.  Then we grabed a quick lunch and headed home.

This trip is one I will never ever forget!  It was so nice to be with Jeff alone.  We love being together.  It was great to be home and see the kids.  We missed them so much!  The next time we go to Hawaii I hope to bring them with us.  This truly was the trip of a lifetime!!!!

Happy Birthday Ethan

I am so late posting this! Ethan's birthday was the end of March.  He turned 9.  We do parties every other year after the age of 8- so it was his off year.  For his birthday we took him to This Is The Place Heritage Park.  I LOVE this place.  I love love how pioneer's lived.  The kids love it for the cute little baby animals and yummy old fashioned donuts.  We tried to see the whole park this time- most of the time we hang around the barn.  The kids loved panning for gold, playing on the ship, visiting the candy store, playing in the playground, seeing the burried skeleton and holding the baby chicks and bunnies.  Afterward we met Jeff at work and went to lunch at City Creek. We ate  Chik-Fil-A- Ethan's favorite.  His cousin's slept over that night and since it was almost Easter we dyed eggs the next day.  Ethan is my baby and sometimes I admit I treat him as such.  He is just such a sweet sweet boy!!  He always holds the door open for me and loves to give hugs and kisses.  I eat it up because I know I will be replaced as his best gal one day.  At nine he:

1. Speaks Chinese.  He's been in an immersion program for three years and he is getting really good.
2. LOVES Minecraft- he also loves to talk my ear off about this game.
3. Loves to ride his bike with his mohawk helmet.
4. Bares his testimony all by him self and actually shares experiences he has had not just the typical- I love my family, etc.
5. Loves Daisy our dog- he likes to carry her around.
6. Loves twizzlers.
7. Is super smart.
8. Is crazy attached to his jacket.  It's like his security blankie and he can't go anywhere with out it.  On hot days we have to force him to take it off so he won't get heat stoke and sometimes he'll even cry without it.
9. Loves to cook and is so proud of himself that he can cook a handful of recipes without my help.

We love this little dude so much and are glad he is part of our family!

This house is my favorite- It's a single little room where the family raised something like 9 kids.  I like to tell my kids that they are very very lucky to have their own room.  Sometimes I wish I only had one room to clean- ha ha.

Ashtyn's Birthday

Ashtyn's birthday started off the way we always do with a room full of balloons and love notes from all of us.  She woke up to gifts on the table.  This year she really really wanted an IPOD touch.  We decided that we weren't ready for her to have a cell phone quite yet so it was a good compromise.  Plus she contributed some money toward it, so hopefully it will mean more to her and she'll take good care of it.  She got some clothes and treats and a special pair of 14K gold heart earrings.  We gave those to her with the hope that she would remember to be "pure in heart."  We had icecream cake after her special dinner with Dad at Panda Express.  I also took her to lunch during the day.

The real fun came that weekend when her two best friends threw her a surprise birthday party.  It was so sweet of them and they went to town decorating her room and the house and making invitations and bringing food.  I provided some pulled pork and ambrosia salad to complete this luau themed bash.  Ashtyn loves Hawaii so this was perfect for her!!  We played lots of fun games like the limbo, poi eating contest(it was really tapioca pudding), lei one on me- a get to know you game where you collect lei's when you guess who answered which questions.  They showered her with gifts and had a really really fun evening!  My Dad happened to be in town so that made it extra special and he took her swimming to get her out of the house so we could set up the party.  HAPPY BIRTHDAY ASHTYN!!

Ashtyn's First Trip to the Temple

sLast night the kids pulled out our old home movies.  If was so fun to see them when they were little.  Seeing Ashtyn as a tiny little girl with her Binky made me reflect on the last 12 years.  Yes my oldest child turned 12 in April.  Everyone always says where did the time go- but really I know where it went. It was transforming a spunky little girl into a beautiful young women.  Ashtyn is everything I wish I was.  She is confident, smart, beautiful, kind, generous and lovely through and through.  She was more than ready to turn 12 and go to Young Women's.  She has a very strong testimony.  The first thing she wanted when she turned 12 was a temple recommend.  She's been asking me all week when we could go to the temple and today we finally did.  I told her that we would have to get up at 5am and she was so willing to do whatever it took to get there.  She was up and ready to go right on time.  When we got to the temple it was still dark outside.  She felt so proud showing her recommend.  When we got there there was already a large group of youth waiting.  I was nervous that she wouldn't want to wait or that she'd be disappointed that we had to wait- but it didn't phase her at all.  She was just thrilled to be there.  She sat patiently watching and waiting for it to be her turn.  All the while I was so anxious that they would forget about her or that other kids would go ahead of her in the line or that they wouldn't let me go back to help her.  That's the best thing about her is she has absolute faith that when she is doing what God asks then everything will work out fine.  She wasn't worried one little bit.  When it was finally her turn they took her back with a group of three girls that had come with one of their fathers.  They measured her tiny little frame and found the suit that fit her best.  They let me dress in white to be able to escort her the whole way.  The cute dad we were with got to confirm and baptize all the girls.  He told her that his daughter asks him to bring her to the temple every Friday.  I know that will be Ashtyn.  She will want to be there every second.  She was so small compared to all of the other kids there- but she shone the very brightest.  I was so proud of her and the person she is becoming.   I am really lucky to be her mom.  I was hovering a little bit too much at the end and she calmly told me that "Mom I can do this and you don't have to baby me any more."  She is right- she can do this.  She will do whatever she sets her mind to do.  It was such a special morning.  We didn't have time to go to breakfast so I took her to lunch later to finish off this perfect day.

We took this picture on the way out of the temple so her hair was wet and she didn't want her picture taken but I wanted to remember this day always!
