The Noyce School of Applied Computing is a new interdisciplinary school combining three departments under one umbrella — Electrical Engineering, Computer Science and Software Engineering, and Computer Engineering. Together, these departments will create interdisciplinary collaboration opportunities for departments and faculty doing applied computing across the university in fields such as statistics.
Cal Poly to Open Advanced AI Factory with NVIDIA Technology
Cal Poly is launching a new Artificial Intelligence (AI) Factory that will give students and faculty the power to develop and train advanced AI models on site, while offering regional partners a way to tap into high-performance computing resources to tackle pressing challenges in industry and the community. The system will place the university among a small number of institutions nationwide with the capacity to drive AI development at this scale.
Powered by an NVIDIA DGX B200 BasePOD with DGX B200 systems and funded through a $3 million investment from The Noyce School of Applied Computing, the system will align Cal Poly with the technology used in NVIDIA’s data centers and is expected to be fully operational by January 2026.
Director's Message
Since becoming director of the Noyce School of Applied Computing in July 2023, I have seen what is possible for students and faculty at the forefront of technology. Our mission to expand Learn by Doing opportunities in computer principles, concepts and technologies is positioning Cal Poly as a leader in shaping the future of applied computing. Cal Poly is a stronger, more forward-looking institution because of the opportunities offered by the Noyce School of Applied Computing.
We are integrating hands-on learning with cutting-edge research and interdisciplinary collaboration. We are preparing graduates to thrive in fields that evolve faster than ever before, such as cybersecurity, AI, data science, advanced wireless networks, robotics and automation, health informatics, semiconductors and embedded systems, and sustainable technologies. Our students are defining the connection between computing and solutions.
These immersive experiences are already propelling our students forward. They are recruited by top graduate programs, innovative companies and government organizations because they leave Cal Poly ready to lead, adapt and invent. Many launch new ventures using their classroom projects, lab discoveries and collaborative work as the foundation for ideas that will shape tomorrow’s digital landscape.
The Noyce School is not just preparing students for the future of applied computing; it is actively creating that future. Through impactful faculty research, expanded interdisciplinary partnerships and continual enhancements to our Learn by Doing environment, we are building a hub where innovation thrives, curiosity is encouraged and students gain the skills, experience and confidence to impact the world around them.
The future of technology is here, and our students will use it to change the world.
