  • My Life and Times

I was born in 1939 BC.
    That’s ‘Before Computers’.

Luckily I survived the following events in my life, such as

World War II, The London Blitz, Rationing, and worst of all… Archbishop Temple’s School.

During the mid 1950s I was enjoying Rock ‘n’ Roll and being a first generation teenager, when suddenly, just like Elvis, I found myself in uniform during ‘The Cold War’…and then

I became ‘a family’. Which meant that I sort of missed the ‘swinging sixties’, but still managed to look a complete prat in the 70s, just like everyone else.

During the ‘Thatcher Years’ I lost my hair and a lot of people lost a good deal more. My career fluctuated to say the least as I was demoted, promoted, fired and hired a number of times, but still I managed to stagger on into a welcome retirement and to celebrate 60 years of happy marriage.

Bobski the Builder.

Posted by Big John on July 2, 2008

Amongst all the ‘junk mail’ coming through my letter box there are always a few flyers from local tradesmen, take-aways, taxis etc., but up until now I have never been able to tell if any of these services are provided by someone from an ethnic minority.

OK, I know that the local ‘Chinese’ is probably run by someone from Szechuan, but the bloke who delivers my ‘sweet and sour’ on a Saturday night is more of a Cockney than me.

Now it would seem that one group of people see their ‘roots’ as a positive advantage when it comes to drumming up business …

I’m not sure that this guy is going to do much trade in this area, which amongst all the old farts who live here, has plenty of ‘retired’ builders, plumbers, carpenters etc. and bloody ‘hundreds’ of landscape odd job gardeners, dodgy driveway ‘contractors’ and assorted bodgers.

From what I can make out from newspaper reports, the Poles who have come to this country since the expansion of the EU are mostly a hard working bunch of people, so I wish our new local builder well, although I feel he may do better if he puts his card through the letter box at ‘Buck House’, which it appears is falling down around our ‘cash-strapped’ monarch. The poor old dear is down to her last £350 million.

Who knows ? … He might even finish up with one of those … ‘By Appointment to ‘er Maj’ …  thingies  … but only …

…   if his quote is low enough.  🙂
