  • My Life and Times

I was born in 1939 BC.
    That’s ‘Before Computers’.

Luckily I survived the following events in my life, such as

World War II, The London Blitz, Rationing, and worst of all… Archbishop Temple’s School.

During the mid 1950s I was enjoying Rock ‘n’ Roll and being a first generation teenager, when suddenly, just like Elvis, I found myself in uniform during ‘The Cold War’…and then

I became ‘a family’. Which meant that I sort of missed the ‘swinging sixties’, but still managed to look a complete prat in the 70s, just like everyone else.

During the ‘Thatcher Years’ I lost my hair and a lot of people lost a good deal more. My career fluctuated to say the least as I was demoted, promoted, fired and hired a number of times, but still I managed to stagger on into a welcome retirement and to celebrate 60 years of happy marriage.

“Left hand, right hand?”

Posted by Big John on November 24, 2020

Ten days ago I visited a local ‘Drive-Thru’. The service was fast and friendly, but none of the staff asked .. “Do you want fries with that?” .. However I was asked for my date of birth, and when I declared that I was born shortly before the start of WWII, I was immediately directed into “the fast lane”, and was quickly on my way home after my free annual flu jab which I had booked with my local health centre several weeks before.

Today, to my surprise, I received a very long letter from “NHS England and NHS Improvement” reminding me that I “should book an appointment with your GP practice or a pharmacy to get the flu vaccination”.

Let us hope that the “Improvement” arm of the NHS has actually been at work before …

… the “Covid” vaccine arrives !

“Every picture tells a story”.

Posted by Big John on November 11, 2020

This photograph shows my grandfather during The 1914-1918 War and I often wonder what this picture shows and when it was taken ? The men look pretty bedraggled and are dressed in an assortment of scruffy uniforms, although their boots are polished…

I also wonder where they had been and what they had seen ? .. and how many of them were as lucky as my grandfather who returned to his family in 1918.

“Confused ? .. You soon will be!”

Posted by Big John on November 1, 2020

Stephen Sondheim wrote a great song .. “Send In The Clowns” .. It’s one of my favourites .. Unfortunately it now reminds me of Barmy Boris and his clueless crew, whenever I hear the line .. “Don’t bother they’re here”.

I’m pretty sure that we are being controlled guided through this pandemic by some kind of ‘lucky dip’ procedure conjured up by ‘Risky Rishi’, the Chancellor chancer who gave us “Eat Out to Help Out” which, it now seems, helped to start a new wave of Covid-19, which means lots more dipping into the hat for more rules which most people won’t understand and which …

… the ‘covidiots’ will just ignore.
