  • My Life and Times

I was born in 1939 BC.
    That’s ‘Before Computers’.

Luckily I survived the following events in my life, such as

World War II, The London Blitz, Rationing, and worst of all… Archbishop Temple’s School.

During the mid 1950s I was enjoying Rock ‘n’ Roll and being a first generation teenager, when suddenly, just like Elvis, I found myself in uniform during ‘The Cold War’…and then

    me-w-badge.jpg

    wed-baby.jpg

I became ‘a family’. Which meant that I sort of missed the ‘swinging sixties’, but still managed to look a complete prat in the 70s, just like everyone else.

During the ‘Thatcher Years’ I lost my hair and a lot of people lost a good deal more. My career fluctuated to say the least as I was demoted, promoted, fired and hired a number of times, but still I managed to stagger on into a welcome retirement and to celebrate 60 years of happy marriage.

“Every picture tells a story”.

Posted by Big John on March 1, 2022

At the age of eighty-three memories of childhood fade, but today, when I opened my daily newspaper a very clear memory returned when I saw this picture …

Image

… for, as a child, I had done just what they are doing … by taking shelter from a possible missile attack !

I had started school towards the very end of WW2 in Europe, and all that I can remember is sitting on the floor of a cloakroom with my back against the wall, just like the children in that picture.

The end of “my war” was “Just around the corner”.

We can only hope that also applies to “their war” !

“83 today” !

Posted by Big John on February 11, 2022

Yes! .. It’s my birthday .. I know ! .. I can hardly believe it myself.

Don’t worry, I’m not going to “bore the pants off of you” with tales about “the good old days” etc. If you want that, just go to the righthand sidebar and click on almost any date in the ‘archives’ to get a glimpse of this grumpy old git’s life in those “days of yore” (I told you that I was old).

I have to say that when I observe today’s “high-tech”, but “dumbed-down” way of life, I feel lucky to have been around during a bygone era, which wasn’t exactly like living in some utopia, but neither was it the crude world that so many moronic and egotistical people seem to live in today.

Having said that, I’m off to open my presents. Unfortunately they are unlikely to include …

… a time machine !

“Woss that then ?”

Posted by Big John on June 12, 2021

My wife and I are in our ‘eighties’. I’m 82 and she is eighty .. Umm ? ‘something or other’.

We were educated in the 1940s and 50s. and, although we didn’t realise it at the time we must, as working class kids, have received a pretty decent education, which included such subjects as ‘English Language’ .. ‘English Literature’ .. ‘World History’ .. and, of course, the usual maths, geography, science etc. etc.

I mention this because, although there are some bright young people about today, most of those we sometimes come across, read about or see on TV, astonish us with their lack of knowledge of ‘the world about us’ and the history of it’s people, including the most momentous events that changed the course of that same history and the famous and infamous people who’s legacy we still live with today.

I’ll give my little rant a rest now, and just finish with a little anecdote …

I once read a report about a World War II veteran going into a store where the young lady assistant noticed the veteran’s pin in his jacket lapel.

“What’s that badge ?” … she asked.

“Oh, it commemorates my service during the ‘Battle of Britain’ ” … replied the old boy …

… “What battle of Britain was that then ?” asked the girl !

R.I.P. ‘Phil the Greek’.

Posted by Big John on April 12, 2021

I was never a fan of The Duke of Edinburgh, but then again, I was never a fan of any of the Windsor (Saxe-Coburg-Gotha) crew. However, it is ‘right and proper’ to show respect at times like these, but, the excessive hours the BBC (and other TV channels) have devoted to reporting the death and reviewing the life of the Queen’s husband has been quite ridiculous to say the least.

Something which I found far more annoying than the ‘wall to wall’ reporting, was the media coverage, which rightly showed the solemnity of members of the public, but also highlighted the appearance of members of the “grief-lite” brigade and, in particular, the deplorable behaviour of those parents who hand bunches of flowers to very young children, who cannot possibly understand what is going on, and then push them towards some makeshift memorial or other in the hope of them being ‘caught on camera’.

I know that for much of my long life I lived in a world where funerals and remembrance services were fairly dignified private affairs when “showing respect” meant something. Perhaps the old boy’s low-key affair will remind people of this.

More “Talking Pictures” please !

Posted by Big John on February 28, 2021

During this latest lockdown I’ve spent a lot (maybe too much?) time in front of my TV watching a variety of recorded movies, and I have been surprised just how many times I have pressed the delete button on my remote after just a few minutes of thumping music noise, mumbled dialogue, unreadable subtitles, unrecognisable (and ‘look-alike’) characters, screeching car chases and explosive crashes. Not to mention more automatic gunfire than ‘Desert Storm’, more “mother-****ing” language than heard on an American prison yard, and enough ‘rumpy-pumpy’ to satisfy the most seasoned voyeur !

Luckily, there are one or two channels where you can still enjoy films from the days when the background music didn’t drown out every conversation, clever lighting was used so that you knew what was happening when the action was taking place after dark, and there was no possibility that you would mistake characters played by Edward G. Robinson for Humphrey Bogart or Bette Davis for Ava Gardner.

Oh! … and, before I forget .. Whatever happened to stories with a …

… “beginning, a middle and an end” ?

“Every picture tells a story”.

Posted by Big John on November 11, 2020

This photograph shows my grandfather during The 1914-1918 War and I often wonder what this picture shows and when it was taken ? The men look pretty bedraggled and are dressed in an assortment of scruffy uniforms, although their boots are polished…

Image

I also wonder where they had been and what they had seen ? .. and how many of them were as lucky as my grandfather who returned to his family in 1918.

A faded memory.

Posted by Big John on May 8, 2020

Today is the 75th anniversary of ‘VE Day’ (Victory in Europe). I was there, although I don’t remember much about it, as I was only six years old at the time.

195 me (3)

However, I do have a few memories of those war years, such as the wail of air raid warning sirens, the boom of anti-aircraft guns, searchlights sweeping the skies, the drone of German V1 missiles and the question “Is it one of ours ?” whenever the sound of an aircraft engine was heard overhead. It was all part of everyday life for me; although I was a little too young to have experienced much of the fear that older children must have felt.

I have a vague memory of people celebrating and of a large bonfire burning across the street from our bomb damaged house. The fire was on an area of ruins and rubble where, once had stood ten families’ homes.

A messy memory !

Posted by Big John on April 29, 2020

I’ve just had a long conversation with my American cousin who lives in Upstate New York. We are both in our ‘eighties’ and spent much of our childhoods living in London during World War II.

Obviously, we discussed the effects that the Coronavirus is having on the populations of both our countries and the efforts being made by our respective governments and the politicians’ often useless ‘kneejerk reactions’ when trying to control the situation.

However, our conversation wasn’t all ‘doom and gloom’. In fact, we had a good laugh when we discussed the recent panic buying in the supermarkets and the rapid disappearance of all those millions of toilet rolls, for we recalled the days of wartime rationing, when there was no toilet tissue and the ink from the newsprint …

… came off on your bum !
