The past 3 years.

When talking with friends, the same questions pretty much are asked.  "Are you excited to be back in Texas?" "How was Oklahoma?"  "Where are you going to live?" I thought it might be easier (since we definitely want to update family and friends) to just do a blog post about it even though technically I stopped blogging and have every intention of taking the blog private.  Plus, selfishly, writing this out would be very therapeutic for me:)

How was Edmond?
To sum up OUR experience in Edmond, OK in a general statement would read something like 'very nice people but not the right fit for our family'.  It was very evident from pretty much the first few weeks we lived there that this would not be a long term move.  Erik really liked his job and so we definitely went all in and tried for 2 years to love it there thinking we just needed a little time.  We always wondered why it was such a struggle for us to make it work, after all, we thought we were outgoing so that was never one of our concerns. Moving from Frisco;  such a young, new area didn't help either.  Life really slowed down which was partly welcomed.  We didn't worry about what others were doing or what people thought which helped us grow in so many ways! It really forced Erik and I to establish our family goals and priorities.  Luckily, we agreed on all of them.  I can see how problems could arise within a marriage if you find yourselves at a crossroads and you disagree on your goals/preferences.  We literally went from having something going on 5 days a week to NOTHING going on except the boys' MDO.  We went from having a million restaurant choices to eating at On The Border every Friday night (which the boys loved haha).  We spent A LOT of time at home together which again, was PARTLY welcomed.  It took me about 18 months to realize the lessons God was teaching Erik and I.  #1-Life IS NOT always about us.  #2-What does my faith look like when I'm out of my comfort zone? #3-Joy should not be determined by circumstances. Honestly, I set a poor example on all of these lessons and it took me WAY too long to get the message!
Our neighbors were wonderful and loved the boys.  We had AMAZING MDO teachers who truly loved on Jack and Jacob for which we will be forever grateful!  I had a couple of friends that we always had play dates with which was nice.  Jack and Jacob had the best time playing with Gage and Stella, and Noah and Gavin---will miss them so much!!!!  We also made it a priority to travel so we made fun memories on our trips.  BUT, I was really struggling because I knew we longed for something different as far as day to day life went.

The story of Erik's job.
Erik turned down several jobs that would have been lateral or backward career moves and had been trying to get in to External Wholesaling.  He was told by several headhunters that this would NEVER happen without wholesaling experience.  After a year of applying for positions,  I was frustrated, he was frustrated, so we decided in March that we would plan a family vacation to Cabo to "get away" May 12-16.  Long story short, Erik gets a call on May 7ish for a job he applied to in Sarasota (forgot to mention we thought we were going to have to move to Chicago or Florida or some other state, which would have been fine).  The recruiter tells him the Sarasota territory is filled but they need someone for Houston.  Ok.  3 Interviews in 2 days and he was scheduled to fly to Houston May 10 to receive an offer.  Not only was it 2 days before our trip to "get away" BUT they told him in one of the interviews that they want him to be home officed and live in the Dallas area!  WHAT?!?!?!?!?!  He accepted the job offer as a Regional VP External Wholesaler for an investment firm based in Santa Barbara on our way to the airport to leave for Cabo.  We booked this trip MONTHS before...God's timing was so PERFECT that we didn't tell anyone except close family about the position because surely it was too good to be true.  Thank you, Lord for opening and closing doors according to your perfect plan.
BEST. VACATION. EVER.
After 3 years of nothing seeming to go our way, this particular week in May 2012 totally made up for everything we'd been through.
I'm a sports lover so I like to think in those terms, and sports are cyclical.  Life is also cyclical.  The down times help us truly appreciate the good times.  All you Baylor fans know exactly what I'm referring to:)

Now.
We are trying to sell our house in Edmond and very hopeful that will happen soon.  The market there is good.  We are staying in McKinney, TX with my brother and sister in law who have so generously given us their upstairs to live in until we find a house.  But life is good.  We flew back to Dallas from Cabo and the next day we joined a gym, signed the boys up for swim lessons, signed up for 3 day a week preschool, got groceries at MarketStreet:), and renewed our Costco membership (God bless Costco).  We haven't wasted any time getting in to a routine:)  I know I will want life to slow down again but I'm enjoying all the activities and so are the boys!  I started yoga classes and they are proving to be very helpful in calming the anxiety I had built up as well as occasional high blood pressure from living in transition.  We usually go to Lifetime around 10 and get home from the gym/pool around 2:30 so the days are passing quickly!  Most evenings we have dinner then either go hit golf balls or go fishing.  The boys are in heaven.  Erik's job requires him to travel at least every other week so that has been an adjustment for sure:/    We are looking to buy a house in Allen and that seems to be the last piece to our move.

Hopefully that VERY long story helps catch everyone up on us and we can focus on re-connecting with old friends as well as making new ones!

This was taken in Cabo on Mother's Day.  I will never forget this wonderful day.  I love my boys more than ever.  Sometimes being the only girl isn't so bad:)

Blog News

After several weeks of thinking and talking to Erik we have decided to stop blogging about our family for a few reasons. It seems like I'm bombarded with stories of mentally sick people in this world who may use the internet to prey on kids. Also, with the great invention of the iphone, we send picture and video texts on a regular basis to close friends/family so they can keep up with us that way. I am going to cut down my facebook friends so I can feel comfortable posting more pictures/information on there as well. At this point, we just are not willing to put our family at increased risk of the wrong people getting our information for the sake of having a blog. I am not exactly sure when the blog will no longer be visible as I want to be sure and save what I've blogged about the past few years. I may just take it private until I can get a few blog books made. Texas friends and family----Erik has had a few interviews and turned down a few jobs that weren't the right fit. BUT we are hopeful that a move is in our (hopefully near) future:)

Florida

Lido Key -Sarasota 2010

My mom's parents both grew up in South Florida and so I guess I can say Florida is in my blood. And luckily for me, Erik LOVES it too! We've been each year at least one time since Jack was born using trial and error and reading reviews to find the place that works best for us. I thought I'd share our experience for other young families with toddlers trying to plan a vacation who may share our criteria.

1. Quick (under 2.5 hours) direct flight from DFW
2. Shallow water that doesn't get deep quickly and isn't filled with jellyfish
3. A resort type location that we can get a shuttle from the airport and never have to leave unless we are walking to a restaurant off site...I don't cook while we're on vacation:)
4. Travel while kids are in school to get great weather, low rates, and more probable complimentary upgrades.
5. Our favorite Florida (beach) weather is April-early May, and then late September-early November.
6. If traveling during hurricane season, get trip insurance for peace of mind:)
7. Powdery, white sand that the boys can run around on all day.

Taking all that into consideration, our favorite location the past couple of years is Southwest Florida anywhere from Clearwater to Sarasota and down to Marco Island.

We have never been to Florida in October but we will be celebrating Jack's 4th birthday at the Sandpearl Resort on Clearwater Beach. Can't wait to make more family memories in the great state of Florida.

80th Birthday!

Image
My camera wasn't functioning properly but this is a picture of my Grandparents and MOST of their great grand children! I think 4 or 5 were not there.

ImageWe were able to go to my Grandad's 80th birthday party this weekend at my Aunt and Uncle's house in Allen, Texas. It was a fun day but we can't help but think about the challenge he has ahead of him. His esophageal cancer has spread to his liver and he will meet with his oncologist at Baylor Medical today. Later this week, he will go to MD Anderson in Houston to get a second opinion. Please pray for him and the rest of our family (especially my Grandmother).
I will update about the party and our weekend in Texas later but I thought I'd share that 47 out of the 59 people in our family were able to be at the party! My Grandad told me that he was looking around the (full) house thinking "just 60 years ago it was just me and Betty" and now 6 kids, 30 grandkids, and 17 great grandchildren later he has this large, wonderful family. He still drove to FBC Stephenville to preach after the party on Saturday so he could preach on Sunday. He says he won't stop until the Lord calls him home. Amazing testimony and example.

Lots of new posts and an update

Summer is over and the boys are going to be starting back to school soon so I wanted to get caught up on the blog before our fall activities start. A few things we have planned in the next couple of months are:
1. Trip to Texas this weekend for my Grandad's 80th birthday.
2. Trip to Dallas for a Ranger game vs Tampa Bay
3. Trip to Waco for Baylor's home opener vs TCU
4. Jack turns 4 on October 2nd!
5. Weekend in Waco for Baylor Homecoming

And this is a blog post for the future but long story short. About a month ago Erik and I thought maybe we are supposed to be in OKC for another 2ish years and so we started to plan accordingly. We got paperwork for Jack to start a private school next year at the church we have been visiting, found a house (that I loved) in more of a master planned neighborhood (that ideally would help us meet more friends), and just started to really try and focus on the positives of living here (mainly the wonderful people who live here). God quickly shut the door on the house we both felt like was perfect for us when another couple offered over asking price in all cash. It was almost like God was telling us "be patient, I know the desires of your heart and I'm teaching you all about my perfect timing".
*Before I go on I will share that this is EXACTLY where God intended us to be the last 2 years in order to learn a valuable lesson that consists mainly of 'Life is not about our comfort...in fact, I believe the Bible teaches that following Christ will often be uncomfortable for us'....
That being said, both of us are very tired of feeling like we're forcing our lives to work here. Still no "small group" or sense of "community" or a church to really get plugged in to. I know this is wonderful place for lots of families but over 2 years later we still are struggling with what our life is supposed to look like here. Without giving details (because Erik's job here is wonderful and will be very hard to leave), please pray that God opens the right doors for Erik and that the next move for our family is in the near future OR that God will somehow give us a true peace about raising our family here and that he wants us to be 'out of our comfort zone' a little longer:)

Side Note- Jack's soccer team will not be playing this fall season because SOME of the games may conflict with OU football games. Yea....that did NOT go over well with my husband.

Trip to Lincoln

Erik had his 10 yr high school reunion and also Erik's brother and his wife had a little baby girl so we went to Nebraska for a visit! The boys had SUCH a great time. The weather was cool enough to play outside during the day and Nana and Grandpa took them to the Lancaster County Fair which they LOVED.

Food

We have been doing a lot of grilling and lighter meals during this HOT summer so last week when the temp dropped down into the 90s my boys were asking for heartier meals....I guess 90 degrees reminded them of fall?!?!? So I obliged. Here's a few meals I tried to keep my growing boys fed and happy.

Image
Pioneer Woman's pasta with tomato cream sauce, mini calzones, and caesar salad.

Image
Southern Living's Easy Enchilada Casserole, rice, and salad.

Chicken parmesan was probably their favorite.
