Across Ireland, we have been known since 2021 for our ownership of 20 onshore wind farms. In 2025, a new offshore-focused business strategy included divestment of our onshore assets in Ireland and our office in Cork.
Headquartered in Denmark, Ørsted is a global leader in offshore wind, with activities primarily in Europe but also in the Asia-Pacific region and the USA.
In 2023, however, Ørsted and ESB entered into a partnership to jointly develop a pipeline of offshore wind development projects off the Irish coast. The partnership has the potential to deliver up to five gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy.
Provisional rights to develop the Tonn Nua site
At Ørsted, we see Ireland as particularly well-positioned to benefit from offshore wind. We are very pleased that, in November 2025, the Irish Department of Climate, Energy and the Environment provisionally awarded Ørsted and our joint venture partner ESB the rights to develop an offshore wind farm at the Tonn Nua maritime site off the coast of County Waterford.
The Tonn Nua site is still in an early phase of development, but a final investment decision is expected around 2031 – with power generation from the mid-2030s. When completed, the Tonn Nua project will mark an important step in the country’s transition to renewable energy.
