It's a Sho Thing
So here you go. I have not sat in front of a computer for more than a couple minutes in weeks, and i apologize. i know i have annoyed and alienated many people, most of all my sisters, by not keeping everyone up to date. forgive me.in the words of a spainiard "let me explain... no there is too much. let me sum up..."
by now you have all at least seen a picture of sho and i. i went to hawaii and after about three days called her parents in japan and asked for their permission/blessing for us to marry. it was my first time ever speaking to them so i was kinda funny. sho's mom seemed very excited and almost giggly, although sho finds that hard to believe. sho's father asked if i planned on taking her to the temple and i said of coarse, he then replied in english "Ok, that is all that I ask." the next day was sunday and that evening sho, aaron, ai (sho's sister) decided to go visit the temple grounds before going to see some friends. i was very nervous but finally walked her up to the top of the walkway which leads to right in front of the temple itself. we stood on a stone bench talking about wedding plans when i tried my best to smoothly propose like a man. it went somthing like this:
me- well, gosh, ya know i havent even proposed yet huh?
sho- well, thats ok, we can still...
me- would you have any requests?
sho- for what?
me- ya know, for how i should propose?
sho- um.... no....
me- well, i guess i'll just do it normal then
(i get down on one knee)
sho-.................... eh?! what? here? now?
(i pull out the ring box and open it to her)
me- will you marry me?
sho-................................
me- kekkon shite kuremasu ka?
sho- ................................ what should i say?
me- um, 'yes' or 'hai' or anything in the affirmative would be preferable...
sho- ok,.... yes, hai... whatever!
me- thanks!
we felt kinda akward for a while but it soon wore off. it wasnt like super "oh my GOSH !!!! we're ENGAGED!!!!!!!" kinda thing so it didnt really feel too different. i was having panicy feelings for a couple hours but later that night finally received the confirmation from Heavenly Father i had been hopeing to feel for over two years. so thats it. the date is set, Jan 21 at the Laie, Hawaii temple at 11am. sho would really like to hear from ya'll, if you would like. get he email from ML or me or mo if you like. i thnk starting through emails would be a nice way of softening the blow of meeting all of ya'll at once. we really tried to do this all in texas or even utah, but please just trust me when i say, after LONG deliberation, Hawaii is the only GOOD choice. again, i am so sorry i have been to non-reportive with the whole thing. ive been busier than im somtimes given credit for since getting engaged. i promise to be better. i love getting calls from family too. my phone is always on. um... i dont know what else to say so you'll all have to ask questions and i'll answer them with another post... thanks!!! IM ENGAGED!!!!!

She's Official!
Mia Lovisa Scharman is now an official member of the church.

She was an angel through the blessing until she was almost dropped toward the end. Then she cried. We were lucky to have mucho family there to support (and by support I mean the emotional kind...as I mentioned above, they weren't great at the physical "support"). We are glad that so many people could be there. Thank you--it was wonderful!!

A Proposition:
I say it's about time for Spencer and Sho to properly announce... their "announcement" right here for the whole family to see. That means we want all the juicy details of the romantic event (and please grace us with some of your personal feelings). Make it a joint activity. Come on, please?!!!! This definitely deserves a post! We're waiting...............

I'm Telling!
I know that most of you have heard now but Clark had back surgery last Thursday to repair a ruptured disc. I would tell you to keep him in your prayers but maybe I should clarify just how you should go about doing that. Maybe you could pray for the scrutiny to avoid activities like this, before I send these pictures to his doctor.

But seriously, he is doing great and has his follow up appointment this Wednesday--though he still has to wear his "corset" for another two months (I'll post a picture later--it does make him look rather shapely, wahoo!)

Is anybody there???
Can we assume the Oscarson contingency in Houston is safe and sound? I'd love more info on how the Hurrican (or lack thereof) affected ya'll. Did you have church today? Was it one big Relief Society meeting to organize relief efforts? What can we do to help? Love you all!

Cubby's Big Day!
This past Sunday Cubby was blessed! It was an amazing experience that we were glad to share with some family--Of course Mo and Papa, Emily and Clark, Bob and Betty, and James' sister Nici (and her hubby and five children) from Austin. James did a beautiful job, and Cubby...he knew it was a special day. By all laws of nature he should have been out like a light for the whole thing. He lay wide awake for the entire blessing, not only looking right at James, but smiling! Then he conked as soon as they came and sat down. How silly I feel for trying to deny him his own special experience! It was all very special for James too--he simply said very humbly, "I bonded with our boy big time today."
Here are a couple of extra pics just for the sake of a visual update of said boy at 6 weeks:

Tummy time with Dad
(His eyes just glow red sometimes..weird, huh?)

Party of Five
In the great words of Taylor Giles,
"THREE CHEERS FOR THE SCHARMANS!"
I'd like to give a shout out to Mia and say welcome to the world, baby girl! And how 'bout this hot mama--doesn't she look fabulous for having just given birth? Although when you only push for twenty minutes I suppose it doesn't take the pretty out. As someone who was present, I can attest that Emily was a trooper--pushed like a champ! And Clark was able to contain his excitement and didn't ask to catch the baby. For a closer look , ask to see the video!

Slide Show of Suzie's Vacation to Utah
Does this look familiar to anyone? We had so much fun tromping about the BYU campus and telling the kids about "the good 'ole days" when we used to do this or that. "Don't you want to go to BYU, too, Waverly?" With her response in the affirmative (who wouldn't want to go there after hearing my great stories??) I followed it up with a good lecture on doing your best in school and getting good grades.
What? Too early for that? But she's going into SECOND GRADE, PEOPLE! :)
I love this one because they look so sweet and innocent...
And I would just adore this picture of my sweet little hosts in American Fork if it didn't look like Hannah's foot was amputated...
Ah... Good times...
Thanks Chip and Marie-Laure!
And the kids had a blast.
...that's right... NINE kids age 6 and under. But it really WAS fun!
What...you want MORE vacation slides? Just you wait. I had so much fun, and I captured just about every moment digitally - yay for you!

Welcome to the World, Baby Boy!
Here is Abby and James' new, sweet arrival. Isn't he beautiful? No word on the official name as of yet. He is less than 24 hours old! He arrived on August 1 weighing 9 pounds, and he's 22 inches long! Way to go, Abs! We are all so excited for you and James. And I personally cannot wait to me this beautiful new nephew of mine!

A New Post for a New Post's Sake
Cutie #1

Cutie #2

Cutie #3

P.S. You'll be happy to know my playroom is now clean and re-arranged. What a good feeling..and I've already watched a few hours of t.v. to catch up on what I've missed while the playroom was uninhabitable. The motivation to clean: Tomorrow the Giles parents arrive with asundry items in a large moving truck...including their comfy couches! We are very thrilled. :) The only thing that could top this new arrival would be Abby and James', I think. What's the hold up, little boy?! We want to meet you!

UPDATE--if you're not bored by me yet...
No baby--but I've been amazingly crampy and uncomfortable on a constant basis since last evening. I even had a doozy of a contraction that produced tears. How odd that in so much pain I was thinking, "ok, this really hurts--but keep 'em coming, please." This morning I was up at 5 with more (although not the super fierce ones) but they were 5 minutes apart for almost 3 hours. I refuse, however, to call the doctor until they hurt like the dickens. I will not be sent home again! It's all or nothing--pray it will be today or tonight because I showered and did hair and make up! It just feels close. Am I the boy who cried wolf?

FRESH MEAT
Did anyone else happen to notice Mo got a visit (and comment) from Julie Jolly? Is the excitement bubbling up inside you too? The possibilities... Wouldn't we all love to lurk around some Jolly Blogs? If any of you are out there, start writing--it's highly recommended. You get to let your inner voyer come out, as well as feel like a rockstar because someone might come read your personal ramblings and may even have something to say about them! What is it about the blog that has us all so captivated?

I've got CAMPS!
Yes, that's correct...I am going camping this weekend with the Giles Clan. And while we are staying in Kabins (yes, with a "K"... as is "KOA KAMPING KABINS") it IS camping none-the-less (or is it Kamping?) Any advice? I leave Wednesday. Comment quicky. I mean Kwickly.

We were invited to spend the 4th of July weekend with friends at their beach house. It was wonderful! See my blog soon for more details and pictures (since you're all DYING for more details and pictures, I know!)
This random post was my first experiment with using Picasa for all of my picture-posting needs. I highly recommend it. What a great (*free*) program! :)

We're Going to Celebrate You Baby..We're Going to Praise You Like We Should
Seeing as how it is Sarah's Birthday on Monday (the BIG TWO EIGHT!) I thought we could pay blogging homage to our dear sister/daughter/friend.
I'll go first.
Sophisticated: Sarah has always had good taste in just about everything, always a cut above the rest.
Attitude: Sarah not only has a spicy side, she has a healthy attitude toward life. She knows what's important and what is not. Even in times of crisis, she maintains a positive and a forward let's-move-on attitude.
Reproducer: Sarah has not only replenished herself and her husband, she has multiplied, thus fulfilling the measure of her creation. And she does this with style and ease even though she is missing some stomach muscles. We all envy the hot body of this mother of three.
Appropriate: You can clean this girl up and take her out on the town and she will never do anything to embarrass you. She will be in the right clothes, she will speak at the correct decibel, she will be articulate and clear and never (or rarely) tell an off color joke.
Hysterical: While as a small child who was scared that someone might climb the house into her window this word might have taken on a different meaning. But as it stands today, Sarah has an hilarious take on even the mundane. She writes so well! She is a fave in the blog community for her hilarity and good humor.
So that's my celebration of Sarah this year. Yes, may she live...yes, may she live...yes, may she live for a hundred years more! Of course, she will live...of course she will live...of course, she will live for a hundred years more!

What gives you "Poop Feeling?"
Ok, I know it's a somewhat shocking title, but I think we'll get some good feedback. After all, I know we all get it, and if someone could give me a scientific explaination for why it happens, it will be an educational and worthwhile discussion. Plus, if you can't talk about your bowel movements with family and friends on an open-to-the-public website, where can you talk about it? (Mo, don't answer that.) So here's the deal, certain things make us have to go. In high school for me it was the J-Crew catalog that would come in the mail. Also right before track meets, for obvious reasons. But I feel like I've grown up a lot--now days, well...it's Target. I walk into Target and head straight for the bathroom because if I don't I truly can't enjoy myself. Most of the time places like TJ Maxx have the same effect. My theory is that anything that holds possibility for me makes me have to poop. In fact it has become much worse with pregnancy, assumably because I eat 10 times more often. But even sitting down at the computer to read e-mail, blogs, or my BabyCenter weekly update on my baby's developement--at the drop of a hat--gotta go. Oh, if I could pass on my abilities to Haley or any other 3 year old who is having trouble..."just go," I want to tell them, "It's a beautiful thing!" I am grateful that I'm quick about it though...are you in and out or do you prefer a good roost? Talk amongst yourselves. Come on, don't be shy. What gives you that feeling?

Name the Babies Contest
Since no one wants to own up to their financial fiascoes (is that like a frescoe?) let's start a new subject. Let's help Abby & James and Emily & Clark name their unborn children--whether they want us to or not! Please submit your nominations for Baby Boy McCoy and Baby Girl Scharman. No, you won't win a trip to Hawaii for the best ideas but I will think of you while I am there lounging on the beach! How about a package of Bilar from IKEA instead? Come on, gang, let's get creative here and give them some good ideas! I'll get you started: Seamus Robert McCoy--or else McAndrew McDougall McCoy. And how about Bonnie Jean Scharman--or maybe Schalala Scharman. Oh wait, how about Roy McCoy or in keeping with James' profession, Frank Lloyd McCoy--then the Scharman's could use Anna Pollis Scharman. There is always Donna Squeesda Scharman. Well, it's late so maybe I'll try again later--but it's not too late for you--enter now!

Not Good With Money
What is the dumbest money mistake you ever made?
Carrie says: "Once I had a friend who was getting married outside in June. I wanted to wear a special "outdoor-wedding-outfit so I got it into my head that I would make one. I found a pattern that I loved, and planned on making it out of silk. I was familiar with a silk shop up in Holliday and figured that the outfit would cost about $50-$70; still cheaper than finding one at Ann Taylor or Anthropologie. The ladies who work in the silk shop are professional seamstresses. They know their stuff, and are, as a result, a little intimidating. But one lady was particularly nice and helpful, and I found a GORGEOUS Dupioni silk in a lovely coral color. She also found me a lovely matching lining and some beautiful buttons. She cut everything as we went and rang me up. The total was $279.89. I held back the tears as I wrote out a check for money I didn't have, and quietly said thank you. I got in to the car and burst into tears. I called Todd immediately and apologized profusely. I have never been back to the silk trap er-shop again."

Taylor's Mothers Day Talk
Pres. Boyd K. Packer
A merchant man seeking precious jewels found at last the perfect pearl. He had the finest craftsman carve a superb jewel box and line it with blue velvet. He put his pearl of great price on display so others could share his treasure. He watched as people came to see it. Soon he turned away in sorrow. It was the box they admired, not the pearl.
In this parable the pearl is likened to the gospel of Jesus Christ and the box represents the peripheral things to the gospel.
I would like to use a similar parable to describe Motherhood.
A woman is given a box and is told that there is something of great worth inside. (Here Taylor pulled out a crude wooden box...the fun really began with this object lesson.) The woman unwraps the box in anticipation and is shocked that the box doesn’t look like it contains something of great worth. It looks like the measurements were improvised and it might fall apart if handled to roughly. Its hinge is made from masking tape and it looks like it is held together with gum and other sticky stuff. It says “Mom” in smudged puffy paint on the top. The woman opens it suspecting that the box might have been mixed up with another one and can’t wait to see what the item of great worth is. She looks inside, and is confused. She pulls out a smashed Pringle that had fallen down the seat of her car. She pulls out a toy animal that seems like it is out to get her. She finds a penny covered in something sticky. And then she pulls out a strange tiny pearl. Her heart sunk, “This was it? This was the item of great worth?” She then saw what looked like a black smudge on the pearl. She looked closer and pulled out a magnifying glass. It said “The smell of your baby after their first bath.” Instantly she was returned to a happy place in her life. She looked down into the box and while she still saw the dirty diapers, PB&J lunches and the outfits that had all been ruined, she now knows what she is looking for and pushes all the junk aside and finds another tiny pearl. She looks for the writing. This one says, “An unsolicited Thank You” She digs in earnest now.
“A sleeping child”
“My first school play”
“Your children playing nicely together”
“My baptism”
“Receiving my college diploma”
Some of the beads had monumental events others were fairly ordinary. Even though there was still junk in the box. She now knows what she is looking for and collects the little pearls daily.
(These were the only notes he had, but he improvised a few other profound things, too. It really was a fabulous talk for a Mothers Day sacrament meeting. I've never heard a person receive so many heart-felt compliments. Someone even called him on the phone after we got home from church - just to say how much she enjoyed his talk. Way to go, Taylor!)

Family fun
i was just thinking and i suddenly remembered playing king of the bed in mo and dads room in st.louis... it started by lying in a line, with our heads on the pillows doing kind of a kick line thing with our legs and chanting somthing about "DE-FEET, DE-FEET..." what was that and where did it come from?
does this happen to ya'll too? you have a sudden memory that just makes you laugh out loud regaurdless of the company you are in? do tell...

Elders Quorum Pinewood Derby
Here is Taylor's entry. He made it all by himself. We're so proud.

Here is his car winning a heat (on the right). Heat? Hete? pheatte? (with a silent "p", of course) Oh, and the back of Waverly's head.

Here is the "no rules" entry made by the FBI agent in the ward. Yes, it is on fire. No, it is not inside - it is in the parking lot.

We didn't win, but we sure had fun trying! Or as Taylor likes to say: "The fun part is making the car!"
And here is Oscar looking quirky, cute and mysterious all at once...kind of like Batman. :)

Dumb and Dumber
I really have been doing and saying so many dumb things lately that I'm kind of worried about myself. Am I getting senile or just losing it? (See my latest post for more details). Anyway, in an attempt to reassure myself, tell me what the dumbest thing you have done lately. I'll start: yesterday I asked someone if they were pregnant. I know, I know. You should never, ever, under any circumstances do that and I did and she wasn't. Beat that one!

not too bad
it went... not so bad. i feel like i tried to do way too much in the time i was given. there were two rooms and the other room finished right before i went (i was choosen to be last) so all 5 of my programs top teachers were there to witness me go down in flames. i was talking really fast but it was much more entertaining than i planned for it be. my mind went blank when i tried to remember the theorist who gave the quote i was about to read, until someone was kind enough to point out that i had written it under the quote itself on the power-point slide.... cool feelings... anyway, all of the professors gave me really kind compliments afterwards. especially the two i really respect the most. one asked me to come by his office to chat because he'd like to hear some more. the other has been my mentor for this project and he said it had really come together smoothly.... so hopefully it was good enough..... i spent all today revising the final draft of the paper. on average, reviewing is taking at least an hour per paragraph. im on page 25 and have about a fourth left.... do i really want to go get a masters??? what am i thinking?

ya know, for kids!!
so whats happening with the grandkids? are they all falling apart? are the all ok? flabby-babs calls me today and tells me that lil' babbs is in the hospital with an IV hooked up and wouldnt even smile, haley is trying to walk through doors and ethans letting his frinds pull him down to their level. are ya'll taking care of my neices and nephews?! somtimes i think they'd be better off living here in hawaii under uncle spence's super-vision.... then i remember how little i eat, sleep and, in general, just dont have the time to really take good care of myself, somtimes.... the fact that im writting this at 3am is proof enough. so keep the kids, i guess, but please be careful with them!

It hit me while sitting and digesting after dinner tonight... i have lived in this house, here in hawaii, longer than i have lived in any single place since Appin Falls when i was still in high school, almost six years ago. how does that make me feel? i dont know. but it lead my thought to wonder where ya'll consider home to be. its a very vague and, really very arbitrary question seeing as how home can be defined as anything depending on.... anyway, in your own definition, where is home?

The Ninety and Nine
The question for today is, "How can we get Chip and Marie-Laure to accept our invitation to join this blog?" And how about Dad? He probably doesn't have much time for online chatting and what-not. I assume Mo keeps him apprised of our goings-on here at Oscarson.blogspot.com. As for Chip and Marie-Laure, I have sent 2 emails of invitation to both of them, the most recent being on March 6. Any thoughts?
Today was Oscar's first day of nursery! He was happy to go, and I was even happier to send him (for his own personal growth and development as an individual, of course). Hooray for sunday school freedom! Unfortunately Henry decided he didn't want to go to sharing time in Primary because "someone took his seat" (as if they were assigned!) That's ok. He sat quietly all through gospel doctrine without a single toy or piece of paper to draw. Weird.

Who shall i be? you decide... or do you?
have any of you read Goffman? he theorizes that we all have various roles we play in a variety of circumstances (father, husband, older/younger brother, friend, classmate, senior/junior coworker etc.) and we are constantly performing for each other and our selves. Goffman says the audience has ultimate control over which role you take on at any given moment. so what happens when you are playing to a blind audience. online, you have no idea who you are talking to. the regions blur and there is no definition between the front stage, back stage or outter regions. there is no making sure the performance is genuine. people have the ability to create a character completely different from who they are and not be discovered (as long as they have the ability to do a complete and convincing job). online, even when talking to my family, i can be as old as i like. i can assert as much influence as i want because there is no decided hierarchy or policing.what do you think?

I Was the Most Terrified When...
...my companion and I were talking to a little girl we had gotten to know from the neighborhood we were teaching in. She liked us and would ask us all sorts of questions like: our names, where were we from, why were we in Scotland, what was America like...
One evening while talking to her (she was only 8 or so...) a man holding grocery sacks came pounding up to us and started yelling in our faces at the top of his lungs to leave the kids alone. He became very violent and got "all up in our faces" saying all sorts of evil stuff. If he hadn't been holding his grocery bags of whiskey and cigarrettes he would have laid hands on us.
We tried to explain that we knew the little girl, and she chimed in that she knew us. "Oh, yeah?" he said. "Then what are their names?"
"Julianne and Carrie."
It took the steam out of him immediately and he stalked off cursing us under his breath. In all my days in the slums of Scotland, this is the only time I felt that we were in real danger. But we were protected, and I never hesitated telling anyone my first name ever...

What is your favorite condiment?
Mine would DEFINITELY have to be A-1. It makes steak better than perfect and breakfast a whole lot more appatizing for me. I LOVE A-1 on top of the cream cheese on a warm bagle. And every once in a while, I need just a bit on a spoon to remind me how good life is...

Favorite Underwear Story
Let's kekep this high minded and classy shall we? I know you all have one. Although I loved my "tick-tock" undies with the clocks on them, so did my sisters, and they were often displayed on the decorative Late Georgian "broken pediment" that adorned the front of the house on Hatteras.
But my favorite underwear story happened while driving to Utah one summer when we had 7 kids AND the station wagon. Sarah, Emily, and I were sharing the "reclining seats" which means laying down on tip of the luggage in the back. I had to go to the bathroom SOOOOO bad that by the time we stopped, I couldn't walk normal. I walked bowlegged because my bladdder was SO heavy and ready to be delivered...
I didn't have time to even pull my pants down and just sat on the potty and went through my clothes. Much to Mo's chagrin...she had to dig through the luggage to find the proper suit case and since I was sharing it with another sibling, she had to dig through the case to find the right underwear and shorts. She brought the clean clothing into the restroom, but as I was pulling off the sodden stinking mess, I knocked the clean underwear into the toilet. Poor Mom...
So that' it...please share your fave underwear story...

A Day in the Life of an Oscarson
What is the best thing that has happened to you today? (Even if today has been the most ordinary day ever...nothing is too big or too small to share with the fam.)

Enquiring Minds Want to Know
I think it might be fun to pose questions and let family members answer them...For instance, who was your first kiss? (Your real one, not one in a closet that was being timed...)

Welcome, Hjalmar's Kin!
I hope you all made it here safely. I have found so much joy in connecting with myself and others through writing at my blog. I thought that maybe this blog could become "Paul Oscarson Family Central" (all spouses included, of course!) for updates and validation on your everyday tribulations and successes. We can even figure out how to post pictures, and I'll set up quick links so you can visit anyone's personal blogs.
Everyone would have to pledge to follow these guidelines:
1) Email me with your current email address and I will set you up as a member, so you can create posts for the entire family to love and enjoy. Send it to [email protected]
2) No one's spelling or lack of capitalization will be made fun of. (Though I do own a copy of Eats, Shoots and Leaves if you need a refresher on punctuation!)
3)Make as many or as few comments as you would like. No one is counting, but you might soon discover comments on your own posts are like digital gold!
4) All technical questions must be channeled through someone other than myself. I'll enlist Taylor's help. And Todd. And anyone else feeling digitally-competent.
5) Let's have some good, family fun!
6) Visit often! It takes just as much time as checking your email.
I love and miss all of you so much! I hope you'll find this to be a neat way for everyone to connect. Please don't be scared if you are unfamiliar with blogs. It is very easy to figure out. Hey, even I have managed!
See you in cyberspace!
