If you love Donna Troy, Phil Jimenez has gifted fans with a truly exceptional tale in the Titans Annual 2025. Jimenez clearly poured his heart and encyclopedic knowledge of DC lore into this special issue, crafting a powerful and emotional story that is unequivocally the definitive love letter to Donna Troy, the original Wonder Girl.

Visually, the annual is a feast for the eyes. Jimenez’s highly detailed style is at its absolute peak in every panel. He rendered each page with immense care, elevating the superhero narrative to high art. He flawlessly captures the mythic grandeur inherent to Donna’s Amazonian connections, delivering dynamic, flowing action sequences that transition seamlessly into quiet, intimate character moments. From sweeping, detailed double-page spreads that remind us of Donna’s cosmic significance, to tender close-ups that reflect her humanity and emotional complexity, Jimenez uses the artwork to amplify the story’s emotional core. His depiction of Donna is iconic—strong, graceful, and radiating the heroism she embodies.

What makes this Annual truly brilliant is Jimenez’s profound understanding and sincere reverence for Donna Troy’s character. Recognizing her often complex and convoluted continuity, Jimenez addresses her history not as a burden to be ignored, but as an intricate mosaic that makes her who she is. The narrative weaves together her origins—as Wonder Girl, as Troia, as sister and friend—into a cohesive and profoundly moving journey of self-acceptance.

The dialogue is authentic, allowing Donna’s voice to ring clear and true as she confronts her own legacy. The annual beautifully reinforces Donna’s role as the emotional cornerstone of the Titans, showing why she remains essential to the fabric of the DC Universe.

It is quite evident that this is a passion project. Longtime fans will appreciate the deep cuts and respectful nods to her various incarnations and key relationships, especially with teammates like Nightwing, Kid Flash and Speedy, all integrated seamlessly so that the story never feels like continuity homework.

Phil Jimenez has delivered one of the most poignant, beautifully executed comics of the decade. Titans Annual 2025 is a must-read book that serves as a powerful testament to the magic that occurs when a creator dedicates their heart, soul, and considerable talent to a beloved hero. This is a triumph in every sense of the word.

Excellent Advice: Cat Prescription Anyone?

“We’ll Prescribe You a Cat” is a heartfelt celebration of the feline spirit and the profound bond between cats and their humans. From the very first page, the book wraps you in warmth, wit, and wisdom, offering not just stories, but soul-level reflections on companionship, healing, and love.

The author, Syou Ishida, masterfully captures the essence of what makes cats so extraordinary—their quiet presence, their quirky independence, and their uncanny ability to know exactly when we need them most. Each chapter feels like a gentle paw on the heart, reminding us of the comfort and joy these creatures bring into our lives.

Reading the final pages was especially poignant for me, as I had just said goodbye to my own beloved 12-year-old cat, Marbles, this week. The emotions were raw, but the book offered solace and understanding in a way few others could. It doesn’t shy away from the pain of loss, but instead honors it, showing how the love we share with our cats continues to shape us long after they’re gone.

This book is more than a tribute. It’s truly a prescription for anyone who has ever loved a cat. It’s tender, beautifully written, and deeply affirming. I enjoyed every character and cat in this book. For anyone who is a pet lover, this is a wonderful read.

Sensational Read: Sanction

Mad Cave Studios continues to flex its creative muscles with Sanction. It’s a gripping graphic novel that captures the intensity of espionage fiction while exploring the personal toll of a life in the shadows. Ray Fawkes wrote it and Alessandro Vitti provided the artwork.

Sanction follows Travis Holden, a government agent whose covert missions have left him haunted and isolated. After a botched operation puts him in the crosshairs of his former agency and dangerous outside interests, he is forced to untangle a web of political intrigue, old enemies, and deadly secrets. With time running out and allies in short supply, he must confront not just his pursuers but the ghosts of his own past.

Ray Fawkes structures the narrative as a breathless thriller, balancing tightly plotted action with poignant character moments. The dialogue is punchy and authentic, giving the story a cinematic edge. Holden’s internal monologue provides a weary perspective, adding layers of complexity to what could have been a straightforward action story. Fawkes succeeds in grounding the high-stakes spy drama in a believable emotional reality, making Holden’s struggles both compelling and relatable.

Alessandro Vitti’s artwork is a standout. It’s moody, kinetic, and perfectly suited for this story. The fight scenes are dynamic, with sharp panel transitions that accelerate the pace at just the right moments. His expressive linework and use of shadow convey the tension and paranoia that drive the story. The color palette shifts between cold urban blues and stark, violent reds.

At its core, Sanction is as much a character study as it is an action adventure. The story explores the price of loyalty and the destructive effects of secrecy on the human psyche. Holden’s journey is thrilling and tragic, making this tale more substantial and emotionally resonant.

If you’re seeking a graphic novel that combines explosive scenes with genuine emotional weight, Sanction is well worth your time.

Sensational Read: The Human Target

I know many people are not a fan of Tom King; however, I have actually enjoyed his writing. The Human Target showcases his knack for blending superhero tropes with deep, character-driven storytelling. The first trade paperback collects the first six issues of the series, which reimagines Christopher Chance, the classic DC Comics character, in a fresh and compelling light.

The story follows Chance, a master impersonator who takes on the identities of his clients to protect them from danger. However, when he is poisoned while impersonating Lex Luthor, he has only 12 days to live—and to uncover who wants Luthor dead. The ticking clock adds urgency to the narrative, turning the story into a high-stakes mystery with a personal edge.

Chance is a fascinating character, flawed, cynical, yet deeply human. His interactions with other DC characters, particularly Ice (of the Justice League International), add layers of emotional depth. The supporting cast is well-drawn, both literally and figuratively, with each character serving a purpose in the unfolding mystery.

King’s writing is sharp, delving into themes of identity, mortality, and redemption. The dialogue is punchy and often philosophical, with King’s typical pacing. The noir influences are strong, but the story also feels like a love letter to classic DC lore, with cameos and references that reflect his fandom of DC.

Greg Smallwood’s artwork is stunning. His clean lines and retro aesthetic evoke the golden age of pulp comics while feeling thoroughly modern. The color palette, dominated by moody blues and warm oranges, enhances the noir vibe. Smallwood also handles the layouts creatively, using unconventional panel structures to heighten tension and emotion.

The Human Target stands out in that the series brings out the best of Tom King. Greg Smallwood delivers a masterclass in storytelling, combining a gripping mystery with rich character work and breathtaking visuals. Fans of noir, superheroes, or just great comics will find this is a must-read.

Knights of the Round Table Are Out!

In this imaginative reimagining of an Arthurian legend, Knights of the Round Table Lancelot and Tristan embark on a quest to find the missing magician Merlin, only to discover an unexpected and heartfelt romance.

The story begins when Merlin mysteriously disappears and Camelot finds itself under siege. King Arthur dispatches an unlikely trio to locate him: Morgan le Fay and the knights Tristan and Lancelot. As this group journeys through the lands of Albion, they face treacherous foes, save imperiled towns, and battle fae creatures. Through these shared trials, their bonds deepen, and a tender connection blossoms between the two knights. Before they can fully navigate these complex, burgeoning feelings, a dark and unforeseen force emerges, threatening the very existence of Camelot.

From author James Persichetti and newcomer L.S. Biehler, “Tristan and Lancelot: A Tale of Two Knights” delivers a story that blends adventure and love. One of the most engaging aspects of new Arthurian interpretations is seeing how creators adapt the classic elements. This version offers compelling twists beyond the central romance. Notably, Morgan le Fay is portrayed not as an antagonist, but as a capable ally, actively assisting in the search for Merlin as supernatural enemies bear down on Camelot. Furthermore, Tristan, traditionally known for his association with Iseult, is depicted here as a younger member of the Round Table, offering a fresh perspective on his character.

The artwork by L.S. Biehler is particularly noteworthy. The character designs are distinct and easily distinguishable, which is a significant strength for a graphic novel and something lost on many artists these days. The illustrations are expressive and vibrant.

The narrative focuses on the developing relationship between the knights rather than overt sensuality, and progresses at a satisfying pace. It successfully weaves together adventure and heartfelt emotion, creating a world rich with potential. It is a fun reimagining of tales from Arthurian legends.

Sensational Twist: Reversal

“Reversal” is the latest graphic novel from writer Alex de Campi, artist Skylar Patridge, and colorist Kelly Fitpatrick. The book offers a modern fantasy tale that employs familiar tropes like magic returning to society and magical body swaps to explore deeper themes.

At its core, “Reversal” examines the concept of “The Other” – how society categorizes and often fears those who differ from perceived norms. This theme manifests through dual protagonists: Tre, a young Black girl with a medical condition that makes her an outcast, and Niko, a magical warrior trapped within a sword. The concept of “otherness” extends to the monsters emerging from a mysterious forest and even to the forest itself, which carries multiple layers of symbolism.

De Campi brilliantly illustrates how fear of “The Other” enables fascist power grabs through the character of James Dickerson, president of the Institute for Magic. Initially presenting seemingly reasonable policies like travel bans and containment of magical elements, Dickerson gradually reveals his true nature. His rhetoric escalates to explicit fascist terminology, even promising to “make the city great again.” Only through Dr. Robin Grant’s intervention do citizens begin to resist his manipulation of their fears.

The exploration of fascism’s rise feels especially relevant in today’s political climate. De Campi shows how our natural tendency to categorize “others” can be weaponized by opportunistic leaders seeking power through division and fear.

Yet “Reversal” also portrays the positive transformation from fear to acceptance. Dr. Grant comes to embrace not only her daughter’s magical transformation but also her son Anthony’s bird-humanoid form. A subtle but effective recurring element follows an unnamed family gradually accepting their baby’s magical horns rather than hiding them in shame.

Patridge’s artwork is at times inconsistent. The figure work occasionally appears stiff and the emotional range is exaggerated.

“Reversal” is completely engaging and a genuine page-turner. In our current political climate, this tale focuses on acceptance and understanding rather than fomenting fear and division. There were some surprises as the book progressed, but I do not want to spoil the fun if you choose to read this.

The Art of Mike Grell Volume 1 is a comprehensive and visually stunning retrospective that celebrates the career of Mike Grell, which was supported through a Kickstarter campaign. This volume serves as a tribute to his enduring legacy, showcasing his artistic evolution and significant contributions to the medium.

The book compiles a wide range of his work, spanning from his early days at DC Comics to his creator-owned projects like “Jon Sable, Freelance.” It features iconic covers, interior pages, and, notably, previously unpublished sketches and concept art. This inclusion of rare material offers a unique glimpse into Grell’s creative process, revealing the development of his distinctive style and innovative storytelling techniques. The large format and high-quality printing truly allow Grell’s dynamic linework, masterful use of light and shadow, and rich coloring to shine. Additionally, the campaign also included his Legion of Super-heroes Sketchbook Volume 2, which is equally stunning.

A standout feature is the inclusion of commentary and anecdotes from Grell himself, providing valuable context and insight into his creative decisions, influences, and experiences. These reflections offer a behind-the-scenes look at the creation of some of his most famous works, such as “Green Arrow: The Longbow Hunters” and “The Warlord,” enriching the viewing experience and highlighting his impact on genres like sword-and-sorcery and modern superhero storytelling. Essays and observations from other artists and writers inspired by Grell further emphasize his influence on the industry.

Grell’s art is characterized by its realism, attention to detail, and cinematic quality. The book highlights his versatility, showcasing his ability to blend action, emotion, and atmosphere seamlessly, grounding fantastical elements in gritty, believable worlds. “The Art of Mike Grell Volume 1” is a must have for both longtime fans and newcomers. Exceptional History: Defiant

Defiant: The Story of Robert Smalls introduces the world to a captivating historical figure whose life story resonates with themes of courage, resilience, and determination. The first issue offers a compelling look at Smalls’ daring escape from slavery and his journey into heroism, all while setting the stage for an even deeper exploration of his remarkable legacy.

Rob Edwards wrote this series; his screenwriting expertise on films like Princess and The Frog and Treasure Planet is on full display as the narrative is both cinematic and intimate. Edwards’ storytelling strikes a delicate balance, presenting historical accuracy alongside imaginative dramatization. The comic opens with Robert Smalls in a moment of crisis and opportunity, drawing readers into the high-stakes world of antebellum America. Edwards imbues the dialogue and pacing with a sense of urgency, ensuring that the story never lags and that Smalls’ extraordinary character shines through in every scene.

The artwork masterfully complements the storytelling. The illustrations capture the tension and danger of Smalls’ escape, juxtaposing it with moments of quiet determination and hope. The choice of muted tones for scenes of oppression and vivid hues for moments of triumph heightens the emotional impact. The panels guide the reader through the narrative with cinematic fluidity, enhancing the storytelling experience. Every frame feels intentional, serving the dual purpose of engaging the reader while honoring the gravity of Smalls’ story.

One of the comic’s standout qualities is its inclusion of complex themes such as slavery, systemic oppression, and the fight for freedom. It’s done in a way that allows younger readers to learn about a pivotal figure in history, while adults will appreciate the nuance and depth of the storytelling. The comic reductionist oversimplification of Smalls’ achievements.

Defiant: The Story of Robert Smalls is more than just a historical recounting; it is a celebration of an individual whose courage and foresight are sources of inspiration. Issue #1 leaves readers eagerly awaiting the next installment, promising an unforgettable journey through the life of an American hero. Whether you are a history enthusiast, a comic book aficionado, or someone seeking an inspiring story, Defiant: The Story of Robert Smalls is a must-read. It not only educates but also uplifts, ensuring that Smalls’ legacy endures for generations to come.

YouNeek Reading: The Oloris

The Oloris is the first crossover event blending African fantasy, futuristic sci-fi, and superhero drama into a stunning tale. This graphic novel marks a milestone for the YouNeek YouNiverse, bringing together heroes like E.X.O, Malika, Fury, and WindMaker to face a threat . These amazing characters deliver an action-packed adventure and I was truly excited YouNeek YouNiverse brought them together finally.

Written by Roye Okupe, the narrative is both epic and yet grounded in character dynamics. The story wastes no time diving into the action as an anarchist unleashes an army of extraterrestrial androids on the African continent. This incredible threat created a need for unity among its heroes. Roye  skillfully navigates the character tensions, particularly from Malika, the legendary warrior queen, as she struggles to assemble a team of disparate and “unlike-minded” individuals. Clashing personalities evolve into camaraderie, adding layers of complexity to the story.

The artwork by Sunkanmi Akinboye is nothing short of stunning. Akinboye’s detailed illustrations capture the grandeur of the YouNeek YouNiverse, from the lush landscapes of Africa to the sleek, futuristic designs of the extraterrestrial androids. The action sequences are dynamic with panels that explode with energy and movement.

The graphic novel’s strength also lies in its ability to celebrate African culture and history while seamlessly integrating sci-fi and fantasy elements. The story immerses readers in a richly developed world where past, present, and future collide.

Although several of these characters have a rich, well-established backstory, the graphic novel provides just enough context to ensure that newcomers can follow the plot while piquing their interest to explore previous titles.

The Nigerian creators behind this project bring an authentic voice to the storytelling, offering a perspective that is as refreshing as it is vital in the global comic book landscape. I have been a huge fan of YouNeek Studios for many years now and found this to be one of the best titles to date. Admittedly, I am a huge fan of team books so this made me happy!

Sensational Reading: Mathematics for Human Flourishing

I learned of this book from a friend of mine when we were planning a workshop we delivered in June. I obviously had to get it with a master’s degree in mathematics. I was curious how the author would weave human flourishing and mathematics together. It was particularly timely because I was in the process of writing a book chapter on human flourishing in the role of delivering assessments.

Francis Su immediately introduces the readers to a pen pal correspondent, Christopher Jackson. Christopher is in prison for armed robbery and won’t be released until 2033 at the earliest. What’s fascinating about Christopher is that he could run circles around most in his knowledge of advanced subjects in mathematics.

For too long, Francis contends we have left math to the whiz kids who can solve problems quickly. For many of us, math is either irrelevant or a memory of shame. He contends we are all mathematicians, and all teachers of math and invites us to read ourselves, others, and the practice of mathematics differently.

Francis makes the argument that mathematics fosters human flourishing. We flourish as we develop certain virtues, and our pursuit of virtues is aroused by basic desires or longings. Longings like that of exploration, such as how to explain the gaps in the rings of Saturn. Or the longing for meaning, such as the stories we may use to make sense of the Pythagorean theorem. There is play, particularly as we explore the interesting patterns we find in math, engaging in inductive inquiry, and deductive reasoning to explain what we find. We come up with heuristics and try to figure out why they work. As people, we long for beauty and discover it in the fractals.

As one review write, “Math cultivates virtue as we struggle. Real creativity in math involves struggle, the failed solutions that lead to a novel way of seeing the problem that yields the solution. Math’s power may be coercive or creative. The creative use of power multiplies math’s power in the lives of others rather than showing oneself to be powerful. Math can be used to include or exclude and may be a source of either justice or injustice. Math can be a source of freedom–particularly if it is coupled with justice and extend welcome to all. When this happens, mathematics creates good communities, not ones that exclude those who don’t “measure up.” Math sees everyone as capable of discovery in math. Suddenly, you have a group of people engaged in joyous discovery.”

When you read this book, I suspect you will agree that Francis is the math teacher I actually had when I undertook my journey for my master’s degree. He reminded me of my algebra and trigonometry instructor at UNO who made math fun. Even more interesting, the letters with Christopher he shared the puzzles he posed to him spark an interest in digging out the old math books and brushing up on topics I haven’t reviewed in 20 years.

Francis does us a valuable service in awakening readers to the ways we flourish through math, motivating readers to share with others the abundance inspired through the exploration of mathematics. This book was so insightful for me, bringing home what I knew to be the beauty of mathematics, but also in guiding me as I wrote a book chapter on another topic others may find challenging – assessment!
