My thanks to John Dossett for sharing this stunning aerial view of an unnamed PT moving briskly over the water. With her flag flying full, her throttle pushed to the max, and her weapons poised, she moves powerfully ahead. My guess is that this brilliant photo was snapped late in the war, probably 1945, somewhere in the South Pacific.
This PT boat reflects the changes that began, possibly in 1943, when PT skippers like John F. Kennedy were transforming the PTs into heavily armed gunboats to go into the shallows and go directly at enemy shore batteries and surface craft. There are no torpedoes evident on the deck of this boat–it’s all about speed and the firepower for close contact fighting.
Some photographs speak for themselves. This is one of those photos. Just looking at it makes my blood run faster.
Our nation now engages in a mighty struggle against an oppressive, tyrannical regime that murders its own citizens. We are currently under a government deploys cosplaying thugs who are executing citizens. The cost for exercising First Amendment rights can now cost an ordinary citizen his or her life. This is what we are seeing in the streets of Minneapolis. We no longer have the luxury of pretending that fascism has not been unleashed on the citizenry of the United States of America.
My father, George “Red” Stahley, took an oath in 1943 to protect this country from all enemies, foreign and domestic. He fought the Nazis in the Mediterranean in 1944. He fought the forces of Imperial Japan in 1945. He saw action; he saw fellow sailors die on dark rivers. He came home with a case of PTSD that was never diagnosed but found expression in harmful ways over the remainder of his life. It is now 2026 and the enemy waging war on our nation occupies all three branches of the Federal Government. We no longer have the luxury of neutrality. The future of America now hangs in the balance.
The fighting spirit of the US Navy’s Mosquito Fleet inspires me to do everything in my power to repeatedly say “NO.” And I am saying “NO” every damn day to the corrupt, homicidal administration that is bent on crushing dissent, that is murdering citizens in the streets, that is kidnapping children, and that attempts to distort the truth in every possible way. A political party that has been transformed into a protection racket for an international pedophile ring now seeks to impose its will on every facet of American life. This will not stand.
The PTs were small boats manned by large men–men large in boldness, large in courage, and large in the determination to win at whatever cost. May their spirit light the way for all American citizens of good will who are committed to the ideals expressed in the founding documents of our nation. The Mosquito Fleet showed us just how the battle must be waged–stay nimble, stay on offense, and always, always give as good as you get.
I am a fortunate son, bequeathed a legacy of Navy moxie and an indominable spirit. And I am in very, very good company of fellow citizens across the country who will never back down in the face of evil, cruelty, and hatred. A sleeping giant has been awakened and it will not be going back to sleep anytime soon.
The Mosquito Fleet never backed away from a fight. And neither will we.
