hello dreamwidth
May. 22nd, 2022 02:38 pmthings have been difficult for a few years due to depression piling up from chronic pain & illness, grief over multiple deaths, and a lot of hopelessness. things are maybe easing some; we'll see how it goes.
we are probably/maybe/wtf i dunno moving to the east coast soon b/c p's dad wants us closer (p's his eldest). which is a good thing but the change and lack of details/changing details is HARD, yo.
we are down to 3 cats: binx the mighty hunter bear; dragon the guardian; cleo the queen of dragon but enemy of binx. binx is failing, slowly, but is happy and feeling good as best we can tell. he will be 18 this august.
i love and adore the show good omens and love the show or flag means death.
i am trying to box up things, which is hard when one can't get to many ofthem.
and that is the end of the news, la la la
so here goes!

Jan. 5th, 2019 02:19 ami have just watched all 8 eps of miss sherlock in 2 days and oh my gosh i love it!
it's a japanese sherlock show where both sherlock and wato-san are women, and it's not americanised at all.

happy decembering
Dec. 7th, 2018 04:55 pmhere's to a decent december for everyone!
misc: anyone else deal with faceblindness with pets, too? isis and cleo are both medium long furred black cats. they DON'T look particularly alike except in broad overview. but i frequently have to get close enough to see the greying face and odd bit in isis' right eye before i'm sure which is which. is frustrating.
i have been, for hte first time in several years, remembering my lightbox every day. i think it's helping, although i'm still struggling a lot.
( grieving and general kitty stuff )
i really, really do not like cold weather. we've been having hard frosts (down in the mid 20s), but the rain is due back adn then it should be highs in 50s and lows in low 40s or upper 30s.
and i would really like to register my complaint that both heat AND cold are mast cell triggers for me. grrrr.
shirts and misc business stuff: i did really well with shirt sales in august/september, but with doing so little work while dealing with grief, november was a wash. so far i've had more sales this month (6) than all of november (4). still not putting as much time in as before, but getting there.
in case anyone is looking for holiday gifts, you can find my:
huge and very geeky cat toys and a (recreated from my own 50+ year old) stocking knitting pattern (winking santa) at Starfire Sundries;
geeky buttons at Catastrfy's Button Emporium;
my designs on shirts at amazon by searching for Designs by Starfire or Starfire Studio (both will probably show some things that don't list those as the brand because... amazon)
and Starfire Studio on Redbubble
prices are higher on redbubble than on amazon, since the shirts are higher quality and the base price is higher. i have few designs up there.
BUT if there's a design i have on amazon and you'd like to see it at redubble, lmk and I'll upload it over there.
doctor who: i LOVE 13. SO. MUCH. ♥

state of the me
Jul. 30th, 2018 07:20 pmhelloooo dreamwidth!
what have i been up to? lots and a little all at the same time. i mean, it's a lot *for me*, but probably a little for most people.
the beginning of january i was contacted by someone who insisted that one of my cat designs i made in 1999 was infringing on their friend. ( background )
i started doing print on demand designs in january at etsy (designsbystarfire.etsy.com) and was accepted into amazon merch in may (their own POD program that so far is just shirts) and love it. ( details )
my newest one is at amazon here -- bigfoot and nessie world champions of hide and seek, 51 years and counting.
Most of my designs are cats, disability, politics, and goofiness.
and speaking of cats: they are doing well, overall. mr bernstein has lost more muscle mass, but he is eating very well. isis is the queen of the garden and hates being in the house, but we she stays well away from the road and does come in at night for skritches and loves. mr b only goes out when it's not super hot, but the others go out into the garden/yard every day. the 4 (isis, samhain, binx, minerva) who will be 14 this year and were housecats from birth really, really are enjoying their senior privileges.
garden is a wash this year.
( medical )
my granduncle died last year. i never met him, and he was a difficult person, but he did help a lot with the genealogy on my paternal side, and i'm grateful for that.
and i have a huge genealogical yay! i found someone with a surname i recognised who matched my dna, contacted them, and this person who matches me is the 3rd or 4th great-grandchild of the person i suspected for a decade was my 3rd ggf's brother! \o/
AND the same thing happened with a descendent of the woman i was sure was my 3ggf's sister. YAY!
these plus the people who match me who descended from my 3rd ggm's brother are very exciting <3
fires: my cousin s. lives in redding and had to evacuate to her daughter's place with the woman she's a caretaker for and all their cats. they are all safe, thank goodness.
depression: i'm still trying to climb out of the depression that started in 2012 when aodhan was dying and got so much worse after hurting my leg (which is part of the reason i'd really, really like to get to a dr). but it IS better than it was.
i think that's about all the news. ::waves flappy hands at you all::

the bernstein has been acquired, part 2
Dec. 3rd, 2017 04:21 amthis past summer during the wildfires here in oregon, bernstein again stopped eating. and it was hot and oh so smoky.
one day he was just splatted int he shade, and he actually let me bring him in. he ate enough over a week or so that he got stronger again.
and then one morning, when it was cooler and the air was fresh, we woke up to not 1, but 2 screens torn out of the windows and a bernstein who was outside sunning himself.
i brought him back in that night, and in the morning he tore out another screen. so i went back to try to get him to eat as much as he could/would outside.
fast forward to cold, wet weather, adn suddenly one day him being completely willing to come in! now we let him out if he wants to go out, and sometimes he scratches at the door to come in.
he's gained back 3 or 4 pounds, i think, and at least some of it is muscle.
he's very, very finicky about food, but minced turkey with gravy (and some calcium mixed into the gravy) has been going down a treat. anything like cat vitamins he won't touch. he's also partial to freshly sliced paper thin beef, both cooked and raw, so i think he's geeting a good amount of taurine.
today i walked down the steps into thefamily room (which he has decided is his favourite place), he and dragon were snuggled together on the chair by the stove *heart*
for now he is happy and purry adn eating well, and this makes me happy.

I CAN POST AGAIN, YAY!
Jul. 28th, 2017 01:07 pmafter my last post, suddenly i couldn't post. i kept trying and trying in all my browsers, but nada.
i send in a support request on 9 jul, but nada. after a week, i stopped checking multiple times/day, just check for this week, and a test post went through, yay!
the support request is still open, nothing has changed on my computer, so i'm at a loss as to what happened.
i'm continuing to get stronger! for about the past 8 years, our garden swing in back has needed the metal parts washed. i'd get outside with some water, and by the time i did that, i was dizzy adn weak.
yesterday i washed 90% of it, and it was *easy*. O.O
i still have days where i'm sick and weak or hurt too much to stand for very long, but they're not every day.
i've gotten a couple plants set out in the garden, and holes dug for a couple more.
the inside cats are all doing pretty good -- although ( cw for inexplicable gore ).
cleo still wants to attack isis. sammy and min (and sometimes binx) tromp on cleo in retribution. isis says "hey, it's summer and i'd much rather enjoy the garden anyway! listen to me purr as i roll and flirt on teh swing!"
mr b is still thin and he's not keen on wet food at all, but he's gotten back a fair bit of energy and has been hunting. the other day i tried to feed him some wet food. he sniffed it, turned his back, and trotted down the steps with his tail in the air. i followed him, and he had the remains of something in the driveway and ate more of it. it was quite large, so he IS eating a fair bit.
and that's about it for news.

long overdue update with wonderful news
Jul. 1st, 2017 06:59 amback in, i think, late 2014, i fell down the stairs between the living room and the family room. at first i thought i was fine aside from spectacular bruising, but my left knee was painful as well as bruised. as it healed, no matter how much i massaged it and tried gentle stretching, it got worse and worse.
the worst part was that i couldn't get it checked out, because our only vehicle is a high truck that i literally could not bend my leg to climb up into, nor could we figure a safe ramp i could hobble up on. we're miles out of town. i have severe mcs, and none of the neighbors are scent free.
so i just did my best. i could no longer rotate my leg outward at all with the knee bent (like if you're crossing your legs). and it hurt all the time.
i have eds, and i've had chronic pain for half a century, and severe chronic pain for quite a few years, but it got so much worse. i was dealing with pain that was hitting new 10s all the time. just standing up or sitting down was horrific. toileting was worse (and i have ic and ibs. fun. )
i couldn't garden. i fell into a deep depression. and i still couldn't get to a dr. so i just went along doing the best i could and reminding myself every day that p and the cats need me to be here.
i did learn about mast cell activation disorder about a year ago, i think. a couple years ago and started self-treatment for that, and it helped in many ways. bone pain went from all the time to just during flares. i could sleep without coughing all night. i didn't have wheals and welts all the time. i could snuggle the cats without allergies!
but my knee was still a problem. it felt like i just have torn something or dislocated something; there was a spot on the top outer part just off the knee cap that was solid and painful and screamed at me every time i stretched.
and then last week.
last week i fell again. the previous time i fell off the bottom step and landed in the litterbox, which was a slightly softer landing. this time i fell from the third step to the stone floor. i was in agony. i couldn't move or speak for a good 15 minutes. p brought me a bag of frozen veg and put it on my knee. i was shaking with pain. it was worse than when i woke up during surgery once and could feel everything and started screaming.
after 30 minutes (maybe longer) i got p to help to the bed. my teeth were chattering and i was shaking all over. i medicated myself to knock myself out (and took antiinflammatories, too)
when i woke up i was very very stiff and achy and scared to try to get up. but i managed it and found out that suddenly, my knee was bending normally! O.O
one of my friends said it sounded like i'd torn adhesions apart so i looked that up. i think they are right, especially given the described pain level of having it done by and hcp. and an edser friend pointed out that adhesions are common in eds, which i didn't know.
so, absolutely horrible fall that ended up being an incredibly, wonderfully GOOD THING! 5 stars, would recommend.
and weird, i mean, i'm the one who's alwasy bruised unexpectedly and terrifically. i have one bruise. a 2x3 one on the front of my right arm just below the shoulder. where i didn't hit anything. yeah, i dunno.
my left knee is tender, but i think that it may be that the tendons and ligaments and muscles have tightened and/or atrophied after almost 3 years of unuse. i'm massaging it and stretching it multiple times/day -- i want to be sure there are no new adhesions.
left leg is also pretty weak -- as am i all over after years of not being able to move much.
but today, for the first time since i fell 3 years ago, i could gently sway back and forth for a whole song, and it wasn't so painful that i couldn't breathe!
now i'm hoping i will be able to remember to post more here, too, and not feel so foggy and lost all the time.

My rating: 1 star
Positives: I really like both the soft front cover and the textured back cover that keeps it from sliding around.
Negatives: It's too narrow to support my hip bones. While it's tolerable for a few minutes, it seems to collapse into itself after that and provide no cushioning. It came with a VERY strong and unpleasant smell; it needed to air a week before I could use it.
Bottom line: I would not recommend this cushion. The idea of the non-skid backing is great, and the cover is soft to the touch, which I like. But those are completely outweighed by the negatives.

further adventures in our 9 lives
Feb. 20th, 2017 12:07 amthe continuing adventures of binx, samhain, minerva, isis, dragon, and mister bernstein, and now cleocatra
this is cleo when i asked her to please stay off the keyboard and lifted her onto the fleece. she rolled over and did this. ( Read more... )
later yesterday, there was a kerfuffle. possibly a ruckus. cleo was followed into the bathroom when she went to get a drink, and much hissing ensued.
she slinked out low into the living room and headed for the front door. so i scooped her up, opened the door, started to set her outside, and lost hold of a very wiggly and unhappy cat who ran back into the living room and ran for.. the couch?
and there was still the sound of hissing in the bathroom. binx and cleo were having a hissing match!
oops. i tried to put ISIS outside!!!
i picked up cleo and put her on my desk, and she snoozed until evening. but when i went out to feed bernstein she snuck out before i could stop her and stayed out of reach as she watched the jumping mice.
and today when i got up, there were 3 black kitties in the house again <3
p reported that she ate well and remembered where the litter box was on her own. her nose was not so hot but still dry. i've medicated her twice today. she loves being on my desk. at dusk she did want to go out again, so i let her, and sammy was very happy to reclaim HER spot on my desk.
the other cats are allowed out in the fence back garden. dragon has been in and out a lot (normal) and binx went out. i thought i heard a meow, so i check the front door and then the back door, and i saw dragon trotting down the path. he got closer and i was glad to see binx was leading him in (binx is also black and hard to see at night).
they both trotted into the house, and i saw it was isis, not binx. i didn't remember letting isis out... (you can SEE where this is going). we all head upstairs and "isis" leaps up on a table because dragon SNIFFED her. i looked at her, looked at the couch, containing one isis, and realised that again this was cleo.
dragon wasn't chasing her that i could tell. i think he was... herding her?
she skittered towards the couch, saw isis, leapt over a box, and ended up at paul's desk. he had to rescue her. in the mean time i put down a fresh towel on the yarn bin behind my chair, and we offered her that. a few minutes of reassurance and some catnip (cleo approves), she settled in. and she's been there ever since.
dragon has wandered around a couple times singing the song of his people (i want to go ouuuut. why am i not out? i'm meant to be out but here i am innnnnn) and he's stared at her some. but that's it. no aggression. no fights!
YAY!
unfortunately we still don't know where she came from. she is so lovey and well socialised i think she must be lost. but either we find her family or she stays with us. either way she will be loved.
this is cleo when i asked her to please stay off the keyboard and lifted her onto the fleece. she rolled over and did this. ( Read more... )
later yesterday, there was a kerfuffle. possibly a ruckus. cleo was followed into the bathroom when she went to get a drink, and much hissing ensued.
she slinked out low into the living room and headed for the front door. so i scooped her up, opened the door, started to set her outside, and lost hold of a very wiggly and unhappy cat who ran back into the living room and ran for.. the couch?
and there was still the sound of hissing in the bathroom. binx and cleo were having a hissing match!
oops. i tried to put ISIS outside!!!
i picked up cleo and put her on my desk, and she snoozed until evening. but when i went out to feed bernstein she snuck out before i could stop her and stayed out of reach as she watched the jumping mice.
and today when i got up, there were 3 black kitties in the house again <3

introducing cleocatra
Feb. 18th, 2017 09:00 pmwe had great confusion here last night because paul thought isis had gotten out and was sitting on the front porch. he scooped her up, she snuggled and purred, he went in -- and saw isis was on the couch. so was binx.
andyet he was holding a very petite black girl cat, super loving and purry, velvety short hair but with a plumey tail...
she's not skinny, not scared of people, but does have fleas, a lot of dry skin, a tender spot near her hind end, and swollen conjunctivas. she's also a little extra warm, so i gave her some food with lysine and turmeric mixed in -- which she nearly inhaled.
i'm trying to have her in the house when dragon (who still needs to be neutered) is outside and have her out when he's in, just in case she's not spayed.
i have no clue of her age, although her toe beans are tough enough that i think she's past adolescence.
here she is,and isn't seh lovely? paul's christened her cleocatra

PRODUCT REVIEW and PLAGIARISM ALERT:
I received this book to review: Instant Pot Cookbook: Best Pressure Cooker Recipes For Fast And Healthy Meals (Delicious Instant Pot Recipes Book 1) by Daniel Alley
0 stars, because this book is plagiarised from foodie bloggers -- both recipes and their copyrighted photos.
You all know I adore my Instant Pot. Imagine how I felt when I saw oh so many familiar recipes and photos with no credit.
So I started checking and then checked in with some authors, and the first response I received was this morning from Julie Han at instantly delicious -- THREE of her recipes appear in the *first section*. She was never contacted for permission to use her copyrighted photos or her recipes.

I've left a review on it on amazon, too. wish i could give it zero stars there, but 1 is the minimum :/

from the land of icestormtonia
Dec. 17th, 2016 01:57 amin the eugene, or area, it's been ice storm time. this is the worst one in the 12 years we've been here. we've had worse cold and outages, but this ice has been knocking down trees all over the area. we lost over a dozen ourself -- and that's down near the house where we can see. i have no idea if my rhodies, lilacs, roses, etc., will surivive; they're still incased in ice.
ice was over 1/2" thick around pretty much everything outside -- and so many pretty pretty icicles, more than we've had before. including the by far longest we've had -- a good 14+"!!
our power went out tuesday afternoon when the line was pulled own by a tree. we're way out near lorane, and although crews do go through the beginning of every season to trim stuff that looks dangerous, it means things like growing up around a line or a branch getting to close. there've been emergency crews out ever since -- and i think it started in eugene proper even before us.
this was 100 and 200 foot firs (and shorter ones, too) coming down from the weight of the ice,a nd this is a very treed area.
it sounded like guns going off most of the night wednesday as the poor trees snapped :(
we have well water with an electric pump, so after we went through the jars of water i'd filled, paul had to go "fishing" in the water tank (we have a gallon glass jar i made a macrame holder for with a long cord).
i learned i can cook beef stew and oatmeal and steak on the woodstove!
we kept nice and warm inside, and put out plenty of extra food for the birds.
mr bernstein, who vigourously snubs the house, left us extra offerings of rodent on the front porch. clearly he felt we might need them!
so we are fine, our neighbors are fine, we will have a lot of firewood for next year.
trees are still going down all over, so the power might away again, but we have fresh batteries and plenty of food and water and everythingis charge back up.
~chris
eta: as of 9pm local, about 14,000 customers in eugene proper (eweb customers) are still without power. we're aprt of lane electric cooperative rather than eweb, and it looks like about 4800 (out of 12,000) are still out with lane electric. we're right on a main road in an area where a lot of people are on little side roads.

PRODUCT REVIEW: Chefs Limited Whistling Tea Kettle
This tea kettle is by Chefs Limited, 2.75 quarts, with a cute whistle.
( photos! )
Taking it from the box, it feels much lighter than my other tea kettle. I like the black and silver, but I really DISlike logos and names on products.
The handle is silicon, I think, and it *smells* really strongly :(
The kettle does sit nicely on a flat surface stove with no wobbling. :)
I was concerned about the cute removable spout/whistle, as it seemed dangerous to pull off when the kettle was boiling, but the whistle part DOES stay cool and I was able to pull it off at full steam with no problem/danger.
But issues, so many issues. Stinky main handle. The handle of the small lid feels loose and insecure.
The small lid doesn't seal properly. When the kettle is boiling, it's very difficult to hear the whistle because most of the steam goes out around the lid instead of through the whistle.
I cannot in conscience recommend this product.
My rating: 1.5 to 2 stars
Disclaimer: I received this product at no charge to review. I received no compensation and the opinion is my own.

PRODUCT REVIEW: Vitamin C Serum by Insta Natural
Available at http://instanatural.com/products/vitamin-c-serum
Since I passed menopause my skin has looked a bit duller than it used to, and when I saw this serum, read the ingredients, and was given the chance to review it, I was delighted.
I have SUPER sensitive skin due to MCS and a mast cell disorder; I haven't been able to wear make up in years.
I really like the little glass dropper bottle. I'm reactive to plasticiser, so something in glass is always my preference.
The scent of this is very pleasant and a bit strong, but not overwhelming.
I apply this after applying Insta Natural's Dual Mattifying Toner. It takes only 2 drops to apply it to my face.
I've had little bumps at my temples, and they've mostly vanished in the 3 weeks I've been using this. My skin looks clearer and it feels great.
It's fabulous to find a product that I can use without problems.
5 Stars, and thank you to #InstaNatural for giving me the opportunity to review this product, which I received at no cost. This is my own opinion, and I cannot stress enough how much I love this product!
PRODUCT REVIEW: Dual Mattifying Toner by Insta Natural
Available at http://instanatural.com/products/dual-phase-mattifying-toner
I've always had oily skin, and because I have MCAD and severe MCS, I also have _extremely_ hypersensitive skin. I gave up on using anything on my face over a decade ago (including makeup) because everything made me itch and get welts.
But this product looked interesting and potentially safe, so I tried it.
And I LOVE it!
The product settles a bit, looking like a reddish fluid with some sediment, but then you shake it and get a pale pink/tan liquid. It has a sort of odd (to me) odor, but it's not unpleasant at all.
The bottle has a squeeze top, so it's easy to pour out just a little into my hand.
I rinse my face with cold water, dry it, then use a small amount, focusing on the areas that get oiliest (forehead, nose, upper cheeks, chin, and massage it in a bit.
My skin *loves* this stuff! It feels satiny to the touch instead of either oily or dry, there's zero irritation, no itching.
I highly recommend Insta Natural's mattifying toner!
My rating: 5 stars with multiple exclamation points!!!!
Thank you Insta Natural for giving me an opportunity to try this awesome stuff! #InstaNatural
Disclaimer: I received this product at no charge to review, and this is my honest opinion.
This is a spray to freshen breathe, whiten teeth, and reduce bacteria. I tried the Cranberry, which is not exactly cranberry flavoured, but sort of reminiscent of cranberry with a hint of something like hibiscus. It's very sweet; I'd have preferred a less sweet taste and/or something minty. ( more back here )
My techy counterpart Paul gave this a good workout, and here's his review:
"The LCD is backlit but only momentarily when a cord is plugged in (and maybe when something fully charges). The backlight is not on when items are actually charging, which makes the LCD hard to read. This is _really_ annoying.
It does detect the charging amperage for each port and will display the charging amps on the screen (it can go up to 2.4 amps per port). Exception was my Ipod Mini, which wouldn't even show it was plugged in via the LCD screen. But the Ipod Mini did still take a full charge.
Unit is rated to 8 amps. I did accidentally run it up to 8.4 amps and it still worked seemingly OK.
After a device is fully charged, it will show on the LCD as a full battery for a while and then the charger will eventually shut down power to the port.
Although there was the problem showing the Ipod Mini when charging, it did show properly on the screen for the WiiMote charger, PS3 controller charger, phones, battery bank, etc.
My rating: 4 stars because of the backlighting issue."
Chris here with an obligatory disclaimer: I received this item at a discount to review. Paul's review is honest and unbiased. You can see his video review here: https://youtu.be/nKdQdP9bx6w

EDS/POTS/MCAD
Oct. 18th, 2016 04:56 pmoh man, this is FASCINATING -- a genetic link: duplication or triplication of a gene called TPSAB1, which leads to high tryptase levels.
Mental Floss reported on it yesterday here.
"The latest study, led by Joshua Milner at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, involved 96 people with EDS-HT and mast cell issues. POTS symptoms were common, especially gut problems like Irritable Bowel Syndrome.
The study participants had another thing in common: higher-than-normal levels of a protein called tryptase in their blood. Tryptase is part of the immune system’s reaction and has been linked to a handful of core EDS-HT and POTS symptoms, Milner says.
"Tryptase can contribute to pain sensitivity," he told me. "It can contribute to blood vessels doing funny things, and it can contribute to how your connective tissue, your bones and joints, are made."
Most people with mast cell issues actually have normal levels of tryptase, so the group Milner and his colleagues tested represented just a small subset of mast cell patients. But that subset did seem to have a unique genetic signature: an extra copy of a gene called TPSAB1. Under normal circumstances, TPSAB1 makes a form of tryptase called alpha-tryptase. People with a double dose of the gene are getting a double dose of the protein, too."
The article is available at nature.com here
"Elevated basal serum tryptase levels are present in 4–6% of
the general population, but the cause and relevance of such
increases are unknown. Previously, we described subjects
with dominantly inherited elevated basal serum tryptase levels
associated with multisystem complaints including cutaneous
flushing and pruritus, dysautonomia, functional gastrointestinal
symptoms, chronic pain, and connective tissue abnormalities,
including joint hypermobility. Here we report the identification
of germline duplications and triplications in the TPSAB1 gene
encoding a-tryptase that segregate with inherited increases
in basal serum tryptase levels in 35 families presenting with
associated multisystem complaints. Individuals harboring alleles
encoding three copies of a-tryptase had higher basal serum levels
of tryptase and were more symptomatic than those with alleles
encoding two copies, suggesting a gene-dose effect. Further, we
found in two additional cohorts (172 individuals) that elevated
basal serum tryptase levels were exclusively associated with
duplication of a-tryptase–encoding sequence in TPSAB1, and
affected individuals reported symptom complexes seen in our
initial familial cohort. Thus, our findings link duplications in
TPSAB1 with irritable bowel syndrome, cutaneous complaints,
connective tissue abnormalities, and dysautonomia"
table one? is me except for the beighton score (i was dxed with eds in 72, before the beighton scale was developed) and i had only a "poor man's tilt table test", which was positive.
i found the compass-31 scale online and took it -- raw 51.5, weighted 70.1. i couldn't find a reference scale, but i'mpretty sure that's more than a bit high.
i am FASCINATED by this. so much so that i emailed one of the authors askingif SNPs had been identified that i could look up in my autosomal dna results.

REVIEW: ChiroDoc Memory Foam Coccyx Cushion
( photo )
I really like this cushion; it's much, much better than the plain foam cusions I've been using.
This one is memory foam and is split at the back to avoid pressure on the coccyx. I am able to sit longer with less pain than I could before! (I have Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, so I still have a lot of pain. But being able to sit comfortably for longer is fabulous!).
My husband also really loves it; when he sits at his computer using his plain foam cushions, he gets low back pain very quickly. When he used my computer with this cusion, no low back pain!
The cover is a velour sort of fabric. It slides around on my chair if it's on the leather, but on top of the afghan my grandmother made years ago, it stays in place perfectly. I'm also pleased that there's no odor to it.
There was an issue with shipping via UPS (who lost the original package), but ChiroDoc was wonderful about Fed-Exing a replacement that got to me SUPER fast.
4.5 stars! (and 5 from the husband-cat!)
ChiroDoc sent me this cushion at no cost and asked me to give it an honest review. Thank you, ChiroDoc!

I get loopy and migrainey from wirepless, so Paul did a video review for the first time to review these for me. Click here to see it: https://youtu.be/aKdwwUWwRqs
Paul says they're EXCELLENT headphones with one caveat: the bit around the ear flops loose easily and is annoying. But aside from that he loves them. Go check out his first video and give him a like?
Sound quality: 5 stars
Ease in adjusting volume, pause, change songs: 5 stars
Comfort: 3 stars
I really like with the presentation; I love the little round holder. Everything feels well constructed and durable.

The AYL TC80 4-In-1 CREE LED Flashlight is a very solid-feeling flashlight with a very bright and clear blue white light from both the front (size/focus adjustable) and the lantern midsection and a fast-flashing red light. It runs on 4 AAA batteries.
The base is strongly magnetised so that you can use it handfree if there's an appropriate surface. It's also great for picking up dropped nuts/screws/etc.

then i realised i don't know enough other languages to recognise some of the roots, and i disappoved.
so i added in german, french, dutch, and spanish.
and also welsh because i have welsh ancestry. oh gosh, the day names are doing me in!
since i've been in a bad pain flare that isn't so bad if i don't move, i've had a week of multi hour language immersion,a nd it's been a lot of fun.
i'm at esperanto level 8, french/german/spanish level 6, dutch/welsh level 5
i'm starcats over there if anyone wants to add me.

help 2 outdorks
Aug. 4th, 2016 10:00 pmmy friend kassiane is an awesome autistic advocate, geeky person, and all around cool fae who is also an amazing archer. (seriously, like doing somersaults and shooting type stuff)
she and jason had their traditional bows stolen the other night in portland (or) and those bows are a big part of their livelihood.
so there is a fundraiser help 2 outdorks replace our bows, for the children
please a) spread the word to any archery folk to be on the look out for the stolen bows and b)spread the word on the fundraiser.

mast cell protocol continues to be awesome; my joints are not going in and out of place so much, and when they do there's less pain. and there's less pain *all the time* O.O
overall pain levels are mindblowingly lower than they've been in years -- unless i mess up my meds. and skipping the mast cell stabilising quercetin is BAD. very very very bad.
cats are happy; they have been allowed out in the back (fenced garden) and enjoy it. on cold or rainy days they Are Not Pleased. i not so much enjoy when they go hunting outside and then bring something in, though. we have words. and i do rescuing.
possibly related to that, we may or may not have a weasel in the house. i mean, it was year the day before yesterday and both paul and i saw it. i opened a window a crack in the living room that evening, and neither of us have seen it since, and it hasn't eaten the food i put in teh bedroom, where it may or may not have been (minerva was guarding hte bureau. i think "may" is valid).
i found a pile of fluff in one of my drawers before we saw the weasel, and i put them outside in compost, assuming a mouse got in. in retrospect, it did not smell of mouse. so. um. just in case weasel had found a safe bed, i put some wool back in the drawer later than night.
unrelatedly, a few days ago there was a bird in the wood stove. with the door closed. it was wise and let me carry it outside. then it declined when i offered to put it down, sat on my hand for a moment, then flew off. <3
the winter solstice before last one of my presents was a string trimmer. but then i fell down the stair, so the past year the garden has been enjoying itself.
with mcad somewhat controlled i am making some muscle and getting a bit fo stamina!! i am strong enugh now to weed whack in small bits! the front 2/3rs of the garden is accessible (behind the shed is sitll all blackb erries), there's a cleared path from the south gate to the driveway, and another from the gate to the water faucet! \o/
my heart is aching tonight for those killed and hurt by the hatred in the heart of the orlando shooter. binx has been giving me lots of loves.
time for more cocoa.
i am going to try to post more.
xoxo

help me start a button making business?
Apr. 29th, 2016 03:10 amhttps://www.gofundme.com/Catastrfy
i want to re-start my old button making business. and i'm fundraising for it. with gifts!
back in the late 70s adn early 80s i put myself through 2 years of college (before i had to drop out for health issues) and paid for 2-3 sf&f conventions in so cal (i livedin nor cal) every year by making and selling buttons.
i started off with a badge-a-minit hand press.
in the mid 80s i was given a desk press.
and in the late 90s i made a huge number of buttons for the buffy bronze parties in los angeles.
but my hands/arms gave out and a better (ie less painful) machine wasn't in the cards then.
since then i've sold some buttons through zazzle, but of course they get most of the profit. and i would like ME to get it!
i'm on very high doses of 3 meds for my mast cell disorder that add up to way too much on a limited income that was already at the nothing discretionary level, so i'm trying to restart my button business now.
i've researched machiens, and the tecre 2.25" one has great reviews, is solidly built, and i found it for less than the equivalent badge a minit (which has terrible reviews).
my fundraiser is at gofundme here: https://www.gofundme.com/Catastrfy
you can see my autisticat designs here: https://www.facebook.com/Autisticat/
and some of my button designs here: https://www.facebook.com/StealthGeekery/
there's autisticat postcards and pillows and starcats toys for thank you gifts.
and please pelase spread word of this.

brick wall goes boom! \o/
Apr. 17th, 2016 11:26 pmOne of my brick walls is ^h^h was Thomas Brennan and his wife Catherine.
In 1842 they were in Beckwith Twp, Lanark Co, Ontario, 3 lots south of my 3rd ggps.
In 1851 they were in Sydenham, Ontario, where Thomas was working as a laborer (the other Brennans farmed) -- and two of the younger Brennan brothers were boarding with the family next door and also laborers.
In 1861, the Thomas Brennans were in Holland Twp, where my 3rd ggps had settled in the 1840s, 2 lots above them.
Thomas is on the same lot in the 1865-1866 Directory of Grey Co. And that's the last he's seen.
Years ago I found a widowed Catherine Brennan with 3 kids that matched in Chicago in 1880, but couldn't find any proof one way or the other.
I still don't have PROOF, but now I have a lot of circumstantial evidence, partially through more records at ancestry.com, partially from a findagrave listing for a daughter of Thomas Brennan and Catherine Comerford in Chicago, and partially for an Irish record of the marriage of Thomas and Catherine in Co Kilkenny -- just over the county line from the other Brennans in Co Carlow, about 2 miles to the northwest.
That Thomas and Catherine were married in 1833. The two eldest daugthers of my Thomas and Catherine (Ann and Margaret) were born in 1836 and 1838. (The parish baptismal register for ~1800-1840 is missing for Muckalee parish, argh)
My Thomas and Catherine move to Ontario and had 6 more children: Catherine, Mary, Ellen, John, Thomas, and Julia.
Thomas last appears in 65-66 in Grey Co, Ont. Catherine first appears as widow of Thomas in Chicago in 1867. She's living at the same address, 120 Milwaukee Ave, as Edward Comerford, her son in law (yes, also her maiden name; I don't know if they were related, but they WERE both from Co Kilkenny). In 1867 Edward built a family home on Halsted. In 1869 Catherine Brennan lists that address.
In 1871 she and her sons are missing -- but Margaret Brennan Comerford, her husband Ed, their kids, and her younger sister Ellen Brennan are on Halsted.
In 1881 Catherine, her sons John and Thomas, her divorced daughter Ellen, and Ellen's children are living together on Libery. Ellen's ex-husband's will (in California) mentions the three children by name and that they are living with their mother in Chicago.
Catherine died in 1892 and is buried in Calvary Cemetery. Margaret died in 1925 and is also buried there (I don't yet know if they are in the same plot). She death record lists her parents by name and her place of birth as "Kilkenna, Ireland"
I went through the records I have for St. Lazarian RC in Leighlinbridge, Co Carlow, for another researcher, the one who posted the marriage of Thomas and Catherine. The other person's names include Hosey, Comerford, and Byrne in Kilkenny near the Carlow border.
The families seem to have very close ties with both the Brennans and other families that married into the Brennans: Lawlor/Lalor, Roach, Mara, Jordan, and Rice. (My 3rd ggm was a Jordan. Her brother married a Lawlor and her sister married a Mara. Her husband's brother John married a Rice and their sister Catherine married a Roach.)
So, based on the patterns and the circumstantial stuff, I feel about 95% confident that I've found the right family. I'm hoping I can find descendents at some point to compare DNA with.
