Vamos!

Our friends the Prices were running the Study Abroad program for BYU in Spain this fall semester so we decided to take advantage and visit them in Spain. It was the first overseas trip for our kids and we were excited to plan out a full itinerary. The kids' schools have some flexible policies for make up work, so were able to take them out of school for a week in addition to the normal week of Thanksgiving holidays. We all decided on a few priorities for the trip (Katie and I wanted good food, art, and architecture, Davin wanted beaches and churros, Rowan and Ellie wanted to see museums and play). We mapped out a two week adventure to hit all of these things, planning a few days each in Valencia, Madrid, Segovia/Toledo, Cordoba, Seville, and Granada. It was an ambitious agenda, but not so crazy we wouldn't have some down time to just enjoy the atmosphere and relax. After months of planning and anticipation we finally headed to the airport on Thursday, November 21. The long fli...

One small step...

It started with this hammock. It's pretty innocuous really. Actually it's quite comfortable and something we all enjoy. However, it happened to be badly placed on Davin's path between playing on the tramp and coming into dinner. I've seen him hop over it dozens of times with his long legs (and maybe I should have thought to move it sooner) but this time he didn't quite clear it and instead it caught his foot unexpectedly, pulling him fast to the cement below. His left elbow took the brunt of the fall and as he came into the family room holding the sagging limb, Chris knew right away that Davin's arm was broken. I was in the garage, sanding a table when Chris poked his head out the door and let me know the news. Only taking a minute to change my clothes, Davin and I headed for the nearest urgent care.  Davin has had a couple of minor breaks. When he was one he rolled off of Oma Nissen's bed in his sleep and broke his clavical. When he was five, he stoo...

Flora and fauna

Ellie is my nature lover and admittedly it delights my heart. Everywhere we go she gathers nature, exalts in its beauty, and asks endless questions.

Extra credit

Rowan needed to do a baking project to earn extra credit for science so of course we threw something together as a last minute cook breakfast effort before going to school. The pics were cute and the result was yummy so it's all good.

A weekend where we did everything and nothing

We really didn't have much planned the last weekend in August which was kind of nice. We drove to Concord to test drive a car (kind of random for us really) which we weren't able to do but ended up at this fun shopping area on a lovely night. It was fun to hang out together! Chris and I finished off the night by ushering in the college football season by watching Florida beat Miami on our outdoor movie screen. Hooray for warm August nights! The next day was the unofficial "get into Mom's red plastic cups and use them to build a tower" day. It was epic.

Ellie Rides a Bike

One night I went to pick up the boys from the church and I mentioned to Chris that Ellie wanted to practice riding a bike so could he please help her for a minute. By the time we got home she was riding the bike by herself! She is a pro and loves riding her bike. She practices any minute that she can, including riding to and from school with either Chris or me. It's so fun to see her riding so well and loving it.

Free tickets!

Our friend Daniela Ballif had free tickets to an A's game that she couldn't use and she offered them to us instead. Ellie's social calendar was already full (she had a birthday party) but the boys were happy to go and bring the Geertsens with them.
