The Watershed
The Saw Kill drains directly into the Hudson River via South Tivoli Bay. Its watershed, covering 22 square miles, includes land in the towns of Red Hook, Milan, and Rhinebeck and the villages of Red Hook and Tivoli.
The Community
The Saw Kill Watershed Community (SKWC) unites area residents who are interested in protecting their water by maintaining the health of the Saw Kill and its watershed— for clean drinking water, flood protection, water supply, recreation, and ecological resources.
Everyone is welcome to SKWC meetings, on the third Wednesday of each month, 7pm at the Elmendorph Inn Route 9 in Red Hook. Typically, we include informative presentations about the Saw Kill and local projects, including water quality monitoring, water contamination impacts, plants and animals, land use, and recreation. Each meeting includes a “community conversations” forum where residents can voice their questions and concerns.

Volunteer Opportunities
SKWC Water Quality Sampler
Open to everyone; as a member of one of our four sampling teams, you will collect water samples (from stream bank or bridges) from 3-4 sites on the Saw Kill and record the results. Sampling is done on the second Friday of the month starting at 10:30 am. From start to finish, sampling takes about 2 hours. Free training is available.
If you wish, you can also help process the samples in the Water Lab after collection. Sampling is fun and easy— and you’re contributing to the science that helps keep your drinking water safe. If you’re interested, contact:
