Petua Greek: Rahsia umur panjang dan sihat

Tidak dapat dinafikan bahawa ajal dan maut adalah di tangan Allah SWT dan telah ditentukan dari azali lagi. Namun begitu, selagi kita hidup dan bernyawa, kesihatan diri perlu dijaga untuk berikhtiar menghindari penyakit, itupun merupakan salah satu daripada sunnah juga. Kata orang, mencegah lebih baik daripada mengubati. Oleh itu, sebelum mendapat pelbagai penyakit kronik yang sebahagian besarnya disebabkan oleh makanan, maka lebih baik kita mengambil langkah-langkah atau mengikuti petua-petua berguna yang sudah terbukti berkesan.

Banyak kajian pemakanan yang dijalankan oleh pakar pemakanan menunjukkan cara pemakanan orang Greek dikatakan memberi kesan yang baik terhadap kesihatan dan lebih panjang umur dalam keadaan yang sihat. Cara pemakanan mereka boleh diringkaskan kepada 4 pendekatan iaitu:

1. Banyak menggunakan minyak zaitun sama ada dalam masakan atau dimakan secara segar (bersama sayur-sayuran).
2. Tidur sebentar pada waktu siang (ini pun selari dengan sunnah Nabi SAW yang menyarankan supaya tidur sebentar sebelum waktu zohor, bagi menguatkan dan menyegarkan badan).
3. Minum 1 atau 2 cawan kopi atau teh setiap hari.
4. Banyak makan sayur-sayuran, buah-buahan dan ikan.

Semua jenis pemakanan ini adalah bagi menghindari penyakit kardivaskular.

Bagi yang mementingkan kesihatan diri, petua yang berguna ini patut diamalkan setiap hari. Semoga kita berada dalam kesihatan yang baik dengan niat untuk mudah mengerjakan amal ibadat kepada Allah SWT.

Greek Researchers Reveal Secrets to Living Longer, Healthy, Happy . . . and Sexy Lives

A just-released study conducted by Greek cardiologists reveals why people who live on Ikaria, an island right off the coast of Greece, live such long, healthy lives that include happiness and sex well into old age.

Apparently, their secrets are simple:

• Heavy use of olive oil

• Naps

• A cup or two of coffee a day (or tea)

• Plentiful fruit, veggies, and fish

“Fish, fruit, vegetables, legumes, and tea shield the cardiovascular system,” the lead researcher said.

“Moreover, daily use of olive oil is beneficial to sexual activity and, if added to the moderate consumption of coffee in the afternoon ‘siesta,’ form the ingredients that may compose the secret of longevity.”

One thing to bear in mind about olive oil in the Greek diet is that the oil they consume is incredibly fresh, whereas in the U.S. genuinely fresh olive oil can be exceedingly difficult to locate.

Interestingly, Ikaria was identified several years ago as one home to some of the healthiest people on earth by National Geographic explorer Dan Buettner. Buettner traveled the globe to uncover the best strategies for living longer. As a result he identified places in the world where higher percentages of people enjoy remarkably long, full lives. Buettner calls these areas, which include Ikaria, Blue Zones (also the name of his bestselling book on the same topic).

While Beuttner’s observations were based primarily on interviews and anecdotes, this latest Greek study quantifies the same findings.

The blogspot Hellas Frappe reported results of the Greek study in detail:

“While in the rest of Europe only 0.1 percent of the population is over 90 years old, in Ikaria the figure is tenfold, 1.1 percent,” said Christina Chrysohoou, a cardiologist at the Athens University School of Medicine.

The study was conducted from June to October 2009 on over 1,400 of the island’s some 8,000 residents, divided into elderly and middle-aged groups and assessing lifestyle, diet, clinical, and other factors.

The study found that the elderly had healthier eating habits and took midday naps more regularly than younger islanders, presenting lower depression rates. And although the risks of high blood pressure, cholesterol, or diabetes are the same as in other parts of Greece, they manifest much later among Ikarians, said professor Christos Pitsavos, a co-author of the study.

4. After drinking the saltwater, lie on your right side for 30 minutes. This helps the saltwater reach the lower right hand side of the stomach, where the opening to the small intestine is located.
5. After 30 minutes, you are free to move about as you wish, though you’ll want to remain near the bathroom.

What to Expect During the Cleanse

Once in the small intestines, the saltwater stimulates contractions that propel the solution through your digestive system. Within an hour you should hear liquids gurgling in your abdomen, especially if you massage the area.

MAJALAH Time baru-baru ini menggariskan 10 penemuan perubatan sepanjang tahun 2011. Ia meliputi teknik, vaksin, rawatan, diet, penyakit dan risiko.

Teknik pengklonan untuk mencipta sel stem.

Sekumpulan penyelidik melaporkan mereka berjaya menggunakan teknik Pemindahan Sel Nuklear Somatik (SCNT) – teknik yang sama mencipta Dolly, kambing biri-biri yang merupakan mamalia pertama diklonkan – ke atas sel manusia.

Oktober lalu, saintis di Yayasan Sel Stem New York berjaya mengubah-suai teknik tersebut dengan menggabungkan DNA sel manusia dengan bahan genetik sel telur. Cubaan sebelum ini mengklonkan sel manusia menggunakan teknik SCNT gagal.

Penemuan tersebut memberi harapan dalam bidang perubatan kerana berkemungkinan dapat menghasilkan sel stem yang akan digunakan untuk merawat penyakit seperti kecederaan saraf tunjang dan Parkinson, satu hari nanti.

Vaksin Malaria yang pertama.

Vaksin malaria pertama yang telah diuji ke atas kanak-kanak di Afrika merendahkan risiko jangkitan malaria sehingga setengah, penemuan luar biasa memandangkan tiada vaksin menentang parasit manusia atau malaria yang menghidap berjuta-juta kanak-kanak setiap tahun sebelum ini.

Para saintis melaporkan vaksin eksperimen yang dikenali sebagai RTS, S itu efektif sehingga 56 peratus dalam memberi perlindungan kepada kanak-kanak berusia dari 5 hingga 17 bulan daripada terkena jangkitan malaria dalam tempoh setahun imunisasi itu.

Namun, tempoh percubaan vaksin eksperimen itu dijangka hanya akan berakhir pada tahun 2014 kerana saintis masih menjalankan pemerhatian terhadap 15,460 orang kanak-kanak tersebut bagi melihat berapa lama vaksin itu dapat bertahan.

Rawatan HIV sebagai pencegahan

Rawatan untuk HIV telah lama dijalankan dengan penggunaan dadah jenis antiretroviral (ARV) yang dapat merendahkan paras virus itu di dalam tubuh manusia, mengekalkan kesihatan pesakit dan mengurangkan risiko penyebaran HIV.

Kajian baru-baru ini mendapati dadah yang sama digunakan bagi merawat jangkitan itu juga dapat memberi perlindungan kepada mereka yang tidak menghidap HIV daripada dijangkiti.

Dalam satu kajian yang dijalankan penyelidik dari Universiti Washington yang melibatkan sebanyak 4,758 pasangan heteroseksual yang seorang daripada mereka menghidapi HIV positif, penjangkitan virus kurang sehingga 73 peratus selepas tiga tahun apabila pasangan yang tidak dijangkiti virus tersebut mengambil pil ARV.

Piramid makanan menjadi ‘sepinggan’ makanan.

Jika sebelum ini Garis Panduan Diet untuk Rakyat Amerika (DGA) mencadangkan piramid makanan sebagai diet seimbang yang menyihatkan, kini mereka memperkenalkan MyPlate, carta makanan berbentuk pinggan.

Carta pinggan berwarna-warni itu dibahagikan kepada empat bahagian sama rata iaitu buah, sayur, bijian dan protein serta bulatan kecil di tepi pinggan itu yang mewakili hasil tenusu, menggantikan piramid makanan yang mengelirukan.

Kajian yang dikeluarkan Januari lalu menggalakkan orang ramai untuk merendahkan semua jumlah jenis makanan dan mencadangkan mereka mengurangkan gula, garam dan lemak, menyeimbangkan jumlah pengambilan dengan pembakaran kalori, mengambil lebih banyak sayur-sayuran dan makanan berasaskan tumbuhan serta makanan laut dan mencadangkan senaman fizikal selama 150 minit setiap minggu.

Bahagian badan membesar di dalam makmal

Pengarah Institut Perubatan Penjanaan Semula Wake Forest, Dr. Anthony Atala Mac lalu mencipta bahagian badan manusia, uretra iaitu tiub kecil yang bertanggungjawab membawa air kencing keluar daripada badan, yang boleh berfungsi dengan baik.

Atala menghasilkan satu bekas menyerupai tiub uretra dan kemudian membenihkannya dengan sel pundi kencing pesakit lalu membiarkan ia ‘tumbuh’.

Apabila organ buatan manusia itu dialihkan ke dalam badan pesakit, ia kemudian terus menjalankan tugas menyingkirkan bahan buangan itu.

Kaitan aneh antara bakteria dan kanser usus besar.

Oktober lalu, kumpulan penyelidik melaporkan bakteria Fusobacteria yang jarang ditemui tetapi didapati membiak di sel kanser kolon dan dikaitkan dengan kemungkinan tinggi untuk jangkitan kanser.

Membandingkan tisu kolon yang sihat dan sel kanser, penyelidik mendapati Fusobacteria 100 kali lebih banyak berada dalam sel kanser.

Ia merupakan kali pertama Fusobacteria dikaitkan dengan kanser. Kajian sebelum ini mendapati bakteria itu dikaitkan dengan risiko tinggi penyebab radang usus besar berulser, keadaan di mana keradangan itu menghapuskan sel yang melapisi usus besar.

Penemuan efektif mengurangkan berat badan

Berdasarkan kajian terbaru, dadah jenis Onexa dapat mengurangkan sehingga 10 peratus berat badan pesakit yang obes dalam tempoh setahun.

Pil tersebut menggabungkan dua jenis dadah iaitu phentermine yang mengurangkan selera dan topiramate yang berfungsi mengawal serangan epilepsi dengan mengatur caj elektrik antara saraf otak yang turut mengawal fungsi tubuh membakar kalori.

Pesakit yang mengambil pil tersebut turut menunjukkan kemajuan dalam tekanan darah mereka, paras gula di dalam darah dan tahap kolestrol, semua yang dapat merendahkan risiko penyebab serangan jantung.

Anjing boleh menghidu kanser paru-paru

Penyelidik dari Jerman baru-baru ini berjaya melatih sekumpulan anjing selama sembilan bulan untuk membezakan sampel nafas pesakit kanser paru-paru dan mereka yang sihat.

Saintis mendapati anjing-anjing itu dapat menyedari perubahan sebatian yang tidak begitu ketara dalam nafas pesakit kanser tetapi mereka tidak dapat menerangkan apa perubahan tersebut.

Air liur menentukan usia

Penyelidik dari Universiti California, Los Angeles (UCLA) mendapati usia mayat yang ditemui dapat ditentukan dari bahan genetik mereka iaitu air liur. Pengaruh persekitaran seperti diet, tekanan, pendedahan terhadap cahaya matahari dan sebarang agen yang mengakibatkan pertumbuhan kanser dalam tisu malah toksik sekalipun tidak dapat menukar DNA di dalam air liur.

Peramal risiko kematian?

Satu kajian mendapati ujian darah yang ringkas dapat meramalkan siapa yang berkemungkinan untuk meninggal dunia kerana serangan jantung ataupun kanser. Kajian selama 12 tahun terhadap hampir 2,000 orang mendapati mereka yang mempunyai paras enzim digelar katepsin S di dalam darah lebih berkemungkinan besar untuk meninggal dunia akibat penyakit tersebut.

Penyelidik masih tidak dapat menentukan bagaimana katepsin S menyebabkan sakit jantung atau kanser tetapi syarikat perubatan kini sibuk cuba menghasilkan bahan yang dapat menyekat kesannya.

Best Stretches for Arthritis Morning Stiffness

For many people with arthritis, morning is the most difficult part of the day. Waking up with stiff joints or joint pain is a common complaint. Although it may seem like the hardest time of day to get moving, doing a few stretches in the morning can give you a more limber start to your day.

It only takes a few minutes to stretch and warm up your muscles and joints. But for the best results, the key is to do arthritis stretches every day. Taking a warm shower before or after stretching can also help you feel more flexible and limber.

The author asked experts Matt Hyland, PT, PhD, MPA, CSCS, president of the New York Physical Therapy Association, and Sharon Kolasinski, MD, associate professor of clinical medicine, University of Pennsylvania for stretching tips for people with arthritis. See their tips in the three sections below.

Stretches for Arthritis in the Back, Hips, and Knees

These three basic stretches will help loosen your back, hip, and knee joints. You can do all three of these stretches right in bed. Or, if you prefer, you can do them on the floor. These stretches should be gentle enough for everyone — including people who have had knee or hip surgery. But if you have any questions, ask your doctor.

Hamstring stretch:
Lie on your back with your left knee bent and your left foot flat on the bed. Bend your right leg and place your hands behind your right thigh. Lift your right leg into the air and straighten it as much as you can, using your hands to gently pull your leg toward your chest. Hold for about 30 seconds and then slowly release. You should feel the stretch in your lower back and the back of your leg. Repeat this stretch on the left leg and then repeat 2 to 3 times on both sides.

Single knee to chest stretch:
Lie on your back and bend both knees. Your feet should be flat on the bed. Take hold of your right knee with both hands and gently pull the knee toward your chest. You should feel a stretch in the back of your leg and lower back. Hold for about 30 seconds and then slowly release. Repeat this same stretch with the left knee and then repeat 2 to 3 times on both sides.

Piriformis stretch:
Lie on your back with both knees bent and your feet flat on the bed. Cross your right ankle on top of your left knee. Wrap your hands behind your left knee and gently pull your knee toward your chest. You should feel a stretch in the back of your right leg. Hold this stretch for about 30 seconds and then slowly release. Change sides and repeat this stretch with your left leg crossed on top of your right knee. Repeat 2 or 3 times on both sides.

Stretches for Arthritis in the Arms, Shoulders, and Neck

These three basic stretches are a good way to loosen the joints of your upper body. You can do the first stretch in bed, but you’ll need to do the last two stretches while you’re standing.

Serratus punch:
Lie flat on your back with your head on a pillow. Bend your knees if this feels better for your back. Raise both arms in the air, toward the ceiling with your palms facing each other. Keeping your head on the pillow and your arms straight, raise your shoulder blades off of the bed, as if you’re trying to touch the ceiling. Hold this stretch for about 30 seconds and then slowly release. Repeat 2 to 3 times.

Corner stretch:
This stretch can be done either in a corner or in an open doorway. Stand about 2 feet away from the corner or doorway. Place your hands at shoulder height on either side of the wall or doorway. Bending your elbows, lean your body weight into the corner or open doorway. You should feel this stretch across the front of your shoulders and chest. Hold this stretch for about 30 seconds and then slowly release. Repeat 2 to 3 times.

Posterior shoulder and back stretch:
Stand straight with both arms at your sides. Gently bring your right arm across your chest, keeping it straight. Take hold of your right elbow with your left hand and gently stretch your right arm across your body. You should feel this stretch in the upper arm and shoulder. Hold this stretch for about 30 seconds and then slowly release. Repeat with the left arm and then repeat 2 to 3 times on both sides.

Stretches for Arthritis in the Hands

If your hands are affected by arthritis, these simple and easy stretches can help loosen up your joints and help increase mobility.

Towel squeeze:
This stretch can be done with a small hand towel that is rolled up or a large sponge. Take the towel or sponge in one hand and squeeze. Hold for 5 seconds and then relax. Repeat 10 to 15 times with both hands.

Finger extension:
Take a rubber band and wrap it around all five fingers just below your fingertips. Gently spread your fingers apart as far as you can. Hold this stretch for about 5 seconds then release. Repeat 10 times with each hand.

Remember that though you should feel a slight pulling sensation or discomfort while stretching, the stretch should never hurt. If you feel any pain while stretching, talk with your doctor.

Petua: 11 perkara tak perlu dalam resume

Bagi mereka yang sedang mencari-cari pekerjaan, penampilan resume yang ringkas, padat, lengkap dan menarik perlu dititikberatkan kerana ia merupakan langkah pertama bagi menambat hati bakal majikan. Oleh itu, bentangkanlah resume yang boleh menarik perhatian, yang kelihatan lebih menonjol daripada resume orang lain yang memohon pekerjaan yang sama.

Satu perkara yang perlu diingat, jangan gunakan resume yang sama untuk semua jenis pekerjaan yang dipohon. Sesuaikan isi kandungan resume yang dihantar untuk jawatan yang dipohon dengan maklumat yang relevan dengan jawatan tersebut.

Bagi membantu membuat resume yang baik dan menarik, petua berikut boleh dijadikan panduan di mana beberapa perkara yang kurang relevan tidak perlu dimasukkan dalam resume. Secara ringkasnya, antara perkara-perkara yang tidak diperlukan ialah:

1. Tidak perlu tulis objektif.

4. Tidak melebihi satu muka surat kerana pihak majikan tidak ada masa untuk membaca resume yang terlalu panjang. Oleh itu resume tersebut perlulah dibuat seringkas mungkin tetapi mengandungi maklumat yang lengkap dan padat. Buat dalam bentuk “bullet”, tidak perlu gunakan ayat panjang-panjang.

5. Tidak perlu senaraikan hobi/kegemaran.

6. Jika anda mengetahui pekerjaan yang dipohon mendiskriminasikan umur dan anda tidak menulis umur dalam maklumat peribadi, maka elakkan daripada majikan dapat meneka umur anda daripada maklumat lain, seperti tarikh anda bergraduat, dsb.

7. Jangan tulis resume sebagai orang ketiga. Tulis bagi pihak diri sendiri.

8. Tidak perlu masukkan nama orang rujukan jika tidak diminta.

9. Gunakan nama/alamat email yang kelihatan profesional, bukannya yang kelihatan seperti keanak-anakan atau orang yang tidak bermaruah. Jika perlu buka akaun email yang baru.

10. Tidak perlu tulis perkataan “telefon” sebelum nombor telefon, terus tulis nombor telefon sahaja.

11. Tidak perlu tulis nombor telefon tempat bekerja anda sekarang, jika anda sedang bekerja di sesuatu tempat.

11 Things You Should Never Put on Your Resume

A new batch of December graduates is getting ready to fly the coop in search of a job and we hope they’ve already heard the bad news: There are a lot of unemployed people out there.

If the market far exceeds demand, how do you make sure you get past the resume screening process into the interviewing round? By making sure your resume is flawless.

“Somewhere between 95 to 99% of resumes have stuff that shouldn’t be on there,” Eli Amdur, senior coach and adviser from the Amdur Coaching and Advisory Group, told us. “The general rule is if you put anything on there that distracts the reader from your real accomplishments, then don’t do it. Resumes need to be concise and clear.”

We’ve compiled some tips from career experts to make sure your resume steers clear of the trash pile.

1. Get rid of the objective.

If you applied, it’s already obvious you want the job.

2. Cut out all the irrelevant work experiences.

If you’re still listing that prized shift leader position from your high school days, it’s time to move on.

Yes, you might’ve been the “king of making milkshakes,” but unless you’re planning on redeeming that title, it’s time to get rid of all that clutter.

3. Take a pass on the personal stuff: marital status, religious preference and Social Security numbers.

This might’ve been the standard in the past, but all of this information is now illegal for your employer to ask you so there’s no need to include it. It will likely only hurt your chances of getting the position more than it would help you, says Catherine Jewell, author of the book “New Résumé, New Career.”

4. Don’t let your resume exceed one page.

Yes, this might be difficult if you’ve had a lot of experience and you’re proud of all of it. But just because you’re proud doesn’t mean it’s necessarily relevant. Cut it down; employers don’t have the time to read two whole pages.

CareerBuilder.com’s Sara Player says: “Keep your work history short and to the point. When you describe what you have achieved while in the position, try putting it in bullet form and put what is most important first.”

5. Don’t list your hobbies.

“Nobody cares — it’s not your facebook profile,” Player says.

In other words, don’t put anything on your resume that’s irrelevant to your job. If it’s not relevant, then it’s a waste of space and a waste of the company’s time.

6. Don’t give them the chance to guess your age.

Yes, your age is included in personal data, but if you don’t want to be discriminated from a position because of your age, it’s time to remove your graduation date, says Catherine Jewell.

Doug Hadley of Mansfield, Texas, told MSN that he’s begun to leave out the fact that he’s a published author: “I don’t want to have to omit such things, but I feel as though I don’t even get considered if they are on my resume.”

Sara Player advises to take out higher education if it’s irrelevant to the position you’re applying for or if you keep receiving rejection letters stating that you’re overqualified.

7. Don’t write your resume in the third person.

Charlotte Beckett, head of Digital at The Good Agency, told Linkedin.com that it’s fine to write in first person in your opening statement, but the rest of your resume should be in bullet points, such as:

• Developed and delivered marketing strategies for a range of products

You should not write in the third person since the recruiter knows you’re the one writing the resume.

8. Don’t include references.

If your employers want to speak to your references, they’ll ask you. Also, it’s better if you have a chance to tell your references ahead of time that a future employer might be calling.

If you say “references upon request” at the bottom of your resume, you’re merely wasting a valuable line, says career coach Eli Amdur.

9. Don’t include a less-than-professional email account.

Make a new one. It takes minutes and it’s free.

10. There’s no need to identify your phone number.

Amdur says there’s no reason to put the word “phone” in front of the actual number.

“It’s pretty silly. They know it’s your phone number.” The same rule applies to email.

11. Don’t include your current business contact info.

Amdur writes at Northjersey.com:

“This is not only dangerous, it’s stupid. Do you really want employers calling you at work? How are you going to handle that? Oh, and by the way, your current employer can monitor your e-mails and phone calls. So if you’re not in the mood to get fired, or potentially charged with theft of services (really), then leave the business info off.”
