As I look through photos from 2013, I keep finding things I have forgotten to include on the blog that are important to me, so bear with me while I play a little more catch-up.
In April we hosted our somewhat-annual tailgate party at Snowbasin to celebrate another great ski season! We fed a record number of people. (Almost 100!!!)
As usual, I didn’t remember to whip out my camera until everyone had pretty much cleared out of there, but it was a lot of fun!
Later that month, Kenni ran her first 5k! I should clarify…. She has actually entered and even attempted to run several 5k’s with me, but this is the first time she has done it all on her own. And she actually ran the whole thing!!!
Which reminded me of another family member who pulled off a fantastic and obscene running feat earlier this spring. My brother Marty ran his first 100 miler. Yes, I said 100 miles. He is crazy insane. But he did it and he was amazing! Seth and I went and ran with him for his last 17 miles or so and by that time he was pretty much walking….slowly…..with the help of trekking poles….but he was still plugging along. When he told us about his experience running through the night I was blown away. The buffalo 100 is a small run with just over 100 runners who had entered that year. They started around noon on Friday, and by the time night fell, Marty knew where he fell in the pack, there were about 40 runners behind him. But the weather turned insanely ugly as the night wore on. The wind was blowing sideways, the temperature dropped into the 20’s and a snowstorm/blizzard blew in. By 6:00 the next morning, Marty stopped to rest at the aid station and was told he was the LAST person left on the trail. All 40 runners behind him had given up and quit the race. Considering that Marty suffers from Rheumatoid Arthritis and knowing what kind of pain he must have been in, I am even more amazed at his perseverance. He is my hero!
Marty with all his pacers. Andy, my mom, Seth & me. He finished 10 minutes under the official cutoff time of 30 hours, the last person to complete the race in qualifying time. He swears up and down he will never do another 100 miler again, but I am almost positive that is a lie. You know what they say, once you go crazy…..well, then you’re crazy! Congrats to my awesome, crazy brother!!
