Plaid

It’s the time for the Project Quilting Challenge 17.2 and the theme was Scads of Plaid.

My initial reaction was ‘ah no’. I always admire the plaid pattern quilts. Beautifully blending colours and that classic look. It was something I should try and gather coordinating fabric to create the pattern.

However, the reality of my stash is never coordinated. And there is no time for shopping for the challenge. So I thought of skipping it this week.

But I went for it to just have fun!

When I looked at my fabric, the bright raspberry pink one was shouting at me and I chose it to be the main feature. Then some coordinating and contrasting fabrics.

I drew up the plan with 1″ squares and 1/4″ thin line. It would be about a 12″ small quilt.

Then I cut the fabrics. 2.5″ instead of 1.5″. That would be a bit too big, I thought. But I already cut enough squares to make a 12″ quilt and started stitching them. So I decided to carry on. By the way, around that time, I decided to tilt the whole thing 45 degrees.

Also I swapped the position of two pink fabrics. In the initial design, the bright raspberry pink and yellow blend to become soft apricot pink. That was fine and it should be. However if I do it, raspberry pink won’t be the main feature. So they were swapped.

Here is another design change. Rather than adding more triangles to fill the edges, I decided to finish it up with bright pink on the edges of all four sides. You can see I removed some yellow and soft pink on the left side.

Then the quilting fun. It is about 18″
