Hi! I love reading, writing, playing interactive fictions, collecting tabletop rpgs, and listening to music. I usually post about books, recipes, my favorite songs, tabletop RPG and interesting links.

My fanfic is on [archiveofourown.org profile] snowynight . I'm (very slowly) backing them up on [community profile] archive_of_night

 Challenge #12

Make an appreciation post to those who enhance your fandom life. Appreciate them in bullet points, prose, poetry, a moodboard, a song... whatever moves you!

Thank you to everyone who create fanwork, comment/kudo work, make rec lists/newsletters/etc, organize events, discuss the canon, or just generally have fun in fandoms! You all are awesome!

 Challenge #9

Talk about your favorite tropes in media or transformative works. (Feel free to substitute in theme/motif/cliche if "trope" doesn't resonate with you.)

My favourite trope is pining, because it can lead to easily resolvable angst and heartbreak. I like when characters stoically pine from afar without feeling of entitlement. I like when characters have very good reasons to expect their feeling to be unrequited (and happily proven wrong).

My current fandom Conclave (2024) is ripe for pining when the main characters are all Catholic priests and nuns,  who swear vows of chastity. So much delicious angst: do you want to break your lifelong vow? Do you really want to tempt your love interest from breaking their vow? Do they want to? Not to mention the power difference between the pope/cardinals; superiors/subordinates. So ripe for pining!

Challenge #8

Talk about your creative process.

When I come up with an idea, I ususally brainstorm a bit about scenes and form a vague idea about the ending.  I also like doing research for inspiration and details.  Then I put my notes and vague scene list into a plain text document for further reference.

I'm a panster and write out of order, because somehow my brain lose interest if I try to outline. I usually only know wht the next scene should be. When I get stuck (often), I rewrite and add other scenes to try to fix it. I'm always looking for a more effective proccess and writing advice.

Challenge #7

LIST THREE (or more) THINGS YOU LIKE ABOUT YOURSELF. They don’t have to be your favorite things, just things that you think are good. Feel free to expand as much or as little as you want.
  1. I don't have known allergy nor nasty side effects to medication I  have taken. This makes my life easier.
  2. I can take pills without drinking water. It's handy when no water is available.
  3. My mind often comes up with ideas that entertains me.

Challenge Day #5: In your own space, create a list of at least three things you'd love to receive, a wishlist of sorts.

My wish list:

1. Recs for music with female vocallist, or music by female composers. I like a variety of music: metal, rock, Celtic, pop, bardcore, country, etc. Music in non-English languages are welcomed! A sampling of my favourite singers/bands: Loreena Mckennit, Dar Williams, Vienna Teng, Within Temptation, XG, etc.

2. Recs for interesting blogs to follow. Books, nature, history, cute animals, trivia, tabletop RPG, world building, art and craft, or anything you find interesting

3. Stolen from [personal profile] kingstoken : Go to arab.org and "click to help", it's free. All raised money goes to UN agencies.

Challenge #4: Rec The Contents Of Your Last Page

"Any website that you like, be it fanfiction, art, social media, or something a bit more eccentric!"

Recently, I have fallen into a rabbit hole of old school tabletop RPG blogs. I really enjoy reading about different settings, character and bestiary ideas. It's a bit sad to land on a blog right long after posting stopped though.

Some interesting posts

d66 Character Creation Questions

REVANESCENCE_: an esoteric cyberpunk setting: "The Earth is a Kowloonesque megacity. It doesn't even resemble a proper planet anymore. Everyone worships the Lucky Golden Zodiac, a fivefold of modern demons that embody the pillars of boundless hypercapitalism. The bones of the planet have all broken under the weight of the mass of greasy blubber that is humanity. You've got as many lives as you can buy."

Dear fandom,

It's joyful to meet people who are enthusiastic about the same media /characters/etc! I love when you're creative and show me new ideas and insight. I am also thankful when you're supportive of my writings and ideas. I have a great time and hope you all enjoy yourselves!

With love,

Hi! I'm snowynight! This's my introduction post

I
'm doing this because it's fun. It's also good to meet other people. I'll try to join as many challenges as possible.

Recently I finally have time to delve into my massive backlog of solo ttrpg from the various huge itch.io bundles I bought.

Superhero DIY Award:

See Issue X
is a solo superhero RPG that emulate superhero comics. It uses playing cards to help generate characters and plot prompts. The mechanic is kind of complicated - I was confused how to deal with discarded cards at first. However, it provides a clear act structure and freedom for you to decide what prompts to use/ignore. I have generated my environmentalist Aquawoman superheroine who fights to protect the ocean and enjoyed the twists.

One More Tea Award

Last Tea Shop Complete is a solo RPG that you run a tea shop on the border of the living and the dead. The recently deceased visit for one last hot drink before their long journey into the Great Beyond. It's very reflective and meditative. It's fun to generate the vistors, and decide what tea to serve them (with different story effects).

Small Is Beautiful Award

One Day at a Thyme is a cozy solo journaling game in which you play the inhabitant of a cottage in a magical world. It's short and very relaxing to play.

Genre Savvy Award

Reincarnated as the Unlovable Villainess?! is a solo RPG that you are isekaied as the doomed villain protagonist in an otome game. I really like it. It's short but has a good balance of strategy elements (to survive to the end) and journalling elements. It's both a love letter to the genre and an enjoyable game.

New Year Resolution

I have just bought For Small Creatures Such As We, a 256 page solo ttrpg about a space ship captain and their alien crews. It's more structured and detailed than the above titles, but I hope I can start a game soon.

snowynight: A drawing of a whale (Whale)

It was on a Monday, April second—I was cruising in the vicinity of Betelgeuse—when a meteor no larger than a lima bean pierced the hull, shattered the drive regulator and part of the rudder, as a result of which the rocket lost all maneuverability.

Recently Finished:

Come Unto These Yellow Sands by Josh Lanyon: Sebastian Swift is a compelling character: a poet who can't write, distranged from his poet mother, and a recovering addict. When he lends his cabin key to a his bruised student out of sympathy, the student turns up missing and becomes a murder suspect. Lanyon made him believable and sympathetic, so when he dig hole for himself, you can where he's coming from. The mystery is fine, but his relationship with his boyfriend Max feels open-ended to me.

Strange Houses by Uketsu: A writer has discovered that the floor plan of a second-hand house reveals a mysterious "dead space” hidden between the walls. Seeking a second opinion, the writer shares the floor plan with an architect friend only to discover more “strange spaces” dotted across the house. Further investigation leads to more mysteries and a terrible plot behind them all.

It's quick and fast paced, with a big twist at the ending. The clues are told through a series of floor plans and interviews, so we piece together the truth alongside the protagonists. The book covers a lot of dark themes, including

child abuse, involuntary confinement, murder and suicide.

The Moomins and the Great Flood: I watched the Moomin anime as a kid, but found it boring then. Only recently I wanted to check out Moomin novels. The world of Moomins was weirder and more dangerous than what I have vaguely remembered about the anime. I really like how matter of sense Moominmamma was. She was an impressive character.

Recommendations from people I trust.

I have never heard of Shoji Morimoto nor his “Do-Nothing Rental Service” before, but a recs for his memoir "Rental Person Who Does Nothing" made it sound really interesting. It's an enjoyable read. Shoji Morimoto has a lot of keen observation about loneliness and social expectation.

Relevance to my current focus:

When I have just finished Piranesi, I wanted to read all the books like that. If I'm interested in philosophy introduction this week, my tbr list will explode with many relevant books.

Fannish Interest:

Aww, this book has a productive fandom/exchange rec post/fannish discusiion. Better check it out. I have picked up many books because of Yuletide.

Interesting Cover:

Eyecatching graphic design helps. For example, I like the cover of The Tangleroot Palace

Written by an Author I like:

If I like a book, I'll check out their other works
