Happy Halloween!

No creative homemade costumes here, but E and S were so excited to be their favorite characters Rapunzel and Lightning McQueen.  E decided she wanted to be Rapunzel when she cut off her hair at the end of the movie.  Like the frying pan?  That’s what she used to collect her candy!  I keep wondering though, why does Lightning McQueen race car driver have muscles? Oh well,  it did keep him warm.  We had a work Halloween party, church trunk or treat, and neighborhood trick or treating and WAY too much candy!

We went to a few houses on our street and then headed over to West Club Blvd where the good trick or treating was.  It was pretty cold out but we had fun seeing all the decorated houses and costumes.  S even found a Lightning McQueen twinner.  We only had two trick or treaters come to our house (granted we were out most of the night) and they were adults. Gotta love Durham.

ImageI got a little lazy when it came to decorating our car!  But hey, the kids still liked the candy.

Preschool!

I started a small preschool co-0p with some ladies from church/area and we’ve had so much fun already.  I look forward to planning fun activities and lessons.  Here are some pics from our last lesson at our house on Fire saftey.  Check out the fire truck E painted!

Numero Tres!

12 weeks along! (the ultrasound was from 9 weeks).  Don’t you love seeing the little peanut’s arm and leg buds?  We are super excited to meet this little one around December 28th.  E asks every day how many more days until Christmas (because that’s when I told her the baby will come)

We are so excited that my brother McKay and his wife Julia are pregnant with their first and due only 6 days after me!  Yeah for cousins!

S’s 2nd Birthday

I have to admit I didn’t plan much for S’s 2nd birthday.  All my plans got thrown to the side once we found out we were moving to Raleigh, NC and it’s been a whirlwind of looking for a place to rent, getting our own apartment rented out, starting to pack, and J finishing up finals.

On S’s birthday we were in Durham, NC (just outside of Raleigh) looking for housing which is about the most miserable birthday anyone could wish on a 2 year old.  But, the last house we looked at that day ended up being “the one” and we celebrated by going to the park just down the street which miraculously was under construction.  This may seem like a bad thing, but for a 2 year old who idolizes trucks, machines, anything with an engine it was a dream come true.  There were dump trucks, motor graders, bobcats, and excavators just sitting there begging for a small boy to drive them.

We also took him out for pancakes (his favorite meal) and had a little birthday cake and ice cream with friends.  And despite all the non-planning it ended up being so much fun.  We are so grateful to have such a kissable boy in our life.  Happy Birthday S!ImageDriving the Motor Grader

You’ll see a new little link on the top right of the blog for DesignMoxy – my new shop at Etsy.com selling Tablecloths!

So yes, I’m doing a little plug for myself here.  I just started a little adventure sewing tablecloths just to see what kind of interest I could drum up… and being starving students, it’s a great past time for a stay at home mom.

Why tablecloths?  Our own dining table was used when we received it and seven years later we’re still using it.  Needless to say, it needed to be hidden beneath something a little more tasteful.  Unfortunately, when I started looking I couldn’t find much out there, and what I did find was way overpriced.  So I decided to sew a couple.

That’s when I kind of got addicted to making these tablecloths, and started imagining a world full of beautiful linens.  So I decided to spread the love and offer a few tablecloths to the world to feed my small addiction.  I only have a few on the site but I’m working on a few more.  Stay tuned.

This is in celebration of my first sale on Etsy.com.  So check it out and since I’m still new at this I’d love your comments and suggestions!

P.S.  Custom is always available – just let me know!

Christmas Traditions…

I’ve been planning christmas for our kids and I keep thinking back to christmases when I was a kid, and christmas morning we’d wake up to some amazing present not only handmade by our talented father but also constructed into some amazing structure filling the whole living room that would impress even Santa.  The blocks, the train tracks, lincoln logs (although not handmade they were laid out in the most amazing village on christmas morning), balance beam and bars, the magic realm game, the list goes on.  Anyway just wanted to say thanks to my dad for making Christmas so magical for us as kids.  I know you must have stayed up many nights.

I’ve been trying to think what I could get E and S that could let their imagination take over.  E is really into building “monster traps”, houses, restaurants, etc by pushing all of her toy boxes, bins, bikes, lids, and anything she can find to make walls around her.  Needless to say it’s a little tiresome to clean up afterwards as well.  But I found this giant knex looking toy – Toobeez – at costco that looks like it would be perfect for her:

Image

You can take it a part and build anything you want with it but the only problem is that it’s $200 for this kit.

Inspired by my father I looked for a home-made version and found this article from Sunset magazine.  You can build something similar to the Toobeez out of PVC pipe for $75.  I guess the Discovery Museum in Sausalito, CA has and exhibit that is very popular using the PVC pipe.  I don’t know if I’ll have enough time or money to make it this year but I definitely want to keep it in mind for the future.   Hopefully I can carry on the Christmas tradition Dad started, so my kids can remember Christmas just as brightly as I do.

Night from Hell.

1. Ellie is in the bath, bites & drinks from a glow stick bracelet.

2. Starts screaming, tells me it’s burning in her mouth, now her tummy and now moving to her arms.

3. I’m alone with 2 kids. I fumble and drop the phone trying to call 911 and can’t get it to turn back on.

4. I’m hauling one wet, naked, sobbing 3 year old, and one squirming 1 year old out to the car while trying to get my phone back on.

5. I fix my phone, call 911 and They can’t tell me the number for poison control, don’t know if glowsticks are toxic, and can’t do anything other than be completely worthless.

5a. I’m cursing and praying in the same breath.

6. I’ve fought open car doors, thrown the kids in the back seat, no seat-belts, and am running red lights on my way to the ER.

7. I’m calling Crystal, my mother, anyone in my phone book trying to find poison control. Trying to avoid accidents.

8. I’m almost to the ER. Crystal calls, she got a hold of Poison Control, and they are freaking amazing. (It’s just a big irritant, not toxic. They just have us give Ellie lots of water and get her calmed down. They even call back in an hour to make sure she’s still ok.)

9. Then I almost start crying when, on the drive home, Ellie thinks I’ve been mad at her this whole time, and, in a tiny little sad voice, tells me, “I’m sorry, Daddy. I’ll never drink that again.”

10. I grab her up in a huge hug and let her know she’s the best little girl a dad could ask for, and get her home to sing her to sleep.

11. I am still angry at 911. I think they’ve hired high school drop-outs to man the phones because of budget cuts.

12. I hate that poison control’s number is impossible to remember in an emergency.

13. I am thankful to God that we are so tremendously blessed and Ellie is smiling, happy, and amazing as ever today.

“Jellysburg” PA

We had an amazing conference weekend in Pennsylvania with Seth, Eugena, and Fisher Gunderson.  On Saturday we took and amazing self guided bike tour through Gettysburg, or “Jellysburg” as E likes to call it.  I just finished reading Killer Angels by Michael Shaara (awesome book for non-textbookers like myself).  It suddenly became so terribly real to me, to see the place where 125,000 men engaged in battle and three days later left 55,000 behind, either wounded or dying.  Where every farm field became a graveyard, and every home a hospital.  It was perfect weather and perfect company, and despite the solemn events that happened there, I enjoyed every minute of it.

Lobster

Surprised J with his favorite.  It looked so amazing, I had to take a picture – it’s not every day my food looks this edible.  Lobster, gnocchi with homemade tomato basil sauce, and green beans.  Took me under 30 minutes!  Eat your heart out Rachael Ray.

James River Flailing

C and I took the kids, and a few friends from school, down to the James this past Saturday. I decided not to wear sunscreen which had a predictable outcome. But man, was it a beautiful day of sun, swimming, a bit of rock climbing, and some mother-loving Rope Swinging! We were catching like 20 feet of air. The water was perfect (if a bit shallow) and the company was excellent.

Summersville Lake, West Virginia

Our first excursion with dad was to the Outer Banks, NC but I haven’t uploaded any of those photos so after the Outer banks we went camping at Summersville Lake West Virginia.  It is some of the most beautiful county I’ve ever seen and it’s right by New River Gorge – an outdoor enthusiast’s heaven.  We loved the campground – Mountain Lake Campground.  They had the most secluded beautiful primitive camping spots with trees all around, apple trees even.  They also had tons of family oriented activities right at the campground including a pool, kiddie pool, bounce pillow, mini golf course, and a beach right on the lake.

The lake itself is amazingly clear – you can see as far as 45 ft deep.  It’s also known for it’s deep water soloing which is what brought the Souter clan 4 hours to WV.

Dad returns!

J finally returned after a long summer in Australia!  E and I had fun decorating the house for his return – post-its with love messages for dad hidden everywhere, windows decorated with hearts, koala bears, lollipops, and E even spelled the word DAD.  We embarrassed him at the airport with way too many balloons.  We missed him so much, but I think he missed us even more.  We were so blessed that we all reunited safely and happily.  We had one week together before school started and J, of course, being the wonderful man he is, spent so much time serving his family – we were in heaven!

E and S were just all over him, they wanted him to do everything with them – brush their hair, dress them, read with them, all the things that i typically do, they wanted their dad to do.  I loved it!  And he loved it too.  He got up every morning early (like 4am as he was still adjusting to a new time zone) and made us these amazing breakfasts.  He did the laundry – he cleaned the house – did the grocery shopping and most importantly he gave us so many hugs and kisses.

It really is heaven on earth to have our family together again.  It makes me realize how sad I would be without one of my family members after this life.  Thank you Heavenly Father for forever families!

Luxurious Lake Powelling

After wearing out the Allred’s we headed to the Souters in Utah.  Where they treated us to an amazing trip to Lake Powell.  Although I was nervous at first when I realized I only had 1 set of eyes on two wild kids, we enjoyed every minute and hardly had a worry.  The kids stayed in life jackets the whole time and the whole family, especially Kaden, helped keep an eye and the kids.

ImageE and Hudson were inseparable.

ImageS on the houseboat sporting his ruggedly handsome lifevest.

ImageWe had so many toys to play with it was hard to decide which one.  The kayaks were great for exploring the lake.

ImageThe waverunners were amazing.  Here’s the girls taking it for a run.

ImageCliff jumping!  Matt and Tessa were so cute together and  i loved getting to know Matt a little better.  I’m so excited they’re getting married

ImageHere’s another pic of the lovely couple with this crazy Brown Pelican that hung out with us for an hour just letting us pet him, hold him and of course feed him.  Then he was on to the next house boat.  Magical!

ImageWater balloon volleyball!

ImageS didn’t love the lake as much as he loved the bucket of water for washing feet.  Here he is with Sierra, not too happy.

Thank you Souters for an amazing trip!!  The food was exquisite, the boat divine, and the company unbeatable.

Saved by the Grandparents

After having the kids to myself for a month I was ready to go crazy and luckily Grandma’s house was just the cure we all needed.

Image

E and S both finished the library summer reading program at Grandma Allred’s and won tons of awesome prizes!  Of course they loved every minute of it.  More books the better.

ImageBest of all, I got to chill with my brother Spencer who just got back from his mission to Tacoma, WA.  I loved hearing his amazing stories and his powerful testimony.

ImageE & Grandma worked on these elaborate projects every day.  This is a fish pinata that they made.  E also made dipped rice crispy treats, juice popsicles and many more things that I stuffed my face with.

ImageS loved listening, playing and dancing to Ben’s music.  They played the drums, guitar and piano together. Notice the bandage on Ben’s eye?  Yeah, he almost blinded himself when he used the wrong contact solution in his eye.  Major burns on the eyeball.  Can you imagine anything more painful?  But I’m happy to report, he’s all better!

ImageE makes a killer burger on the Barby with Grandpa’s help.

ImageE spent most of the time though on the tramp, and the rest of the time she spent convincing us to join her on the tramp.

Eucalyptus makes Koala Bears loopy.

I went to the Blue Mountains, 2 hours outside of Sydney, this last weekend. There is a rainforest that sits just below these massive cliffs. It was breathtaking. So I made a little tour for Ell Bell. Here’s a look at where your dad has been for the past few months. 🙂

Cockatoo Island

Image

Double Rainbow!

Allright, so this is my first Sydney posting, I was going to do these regularly but kind of forgot. 🙂

This is a trip that I did with my boss and his wife out to the Biennial of Sydney on Cockatoo Island, this huge island with an old WWII era shipyard on it. Artists took over each warehouse and put in these massive art exhibitions. My favorite was Inopportune: Stage One by Cai Guo-Qiang which they brought in from Seattle for the show. It’s a series of Ford Cars exploding in sequence over your head. Very cool.

Another exhibit I loved took the warehouse floor and turned it into the rooftop of a slum. Tin roofs and satellite dishes and all. So you’re running around on top of the roof. Very cool.

One artist built a life-size replica of a giant telescope completely out of wood inside the warehouse. It was crazy intricate and beautiful.

And another built a scaffolding and “hung” a giant piano. (it would fall as if being executed every 3 or so minutes then a giant motor would haul it back up 20 feet in the air.)

Pony Pastures in June

I was nervous about taking two kids to play in a river but it turned out fantastic with our friends the Thompsons and Durrants.  Although there are no ponies in these pastures the water is perfect – warm as a bathtub, and shallow enough for the kids to play in.  We saw fish and ducks and and the occasional beer can.
