Everything you need to know to scan, fix, and perfect the spelling and grammar across your entire WordPress site.
Getting Started
Install the plugin — Upload the zip file from your WordPress dashboard under Plugins → Add New → Upload Plugin. Activate it, and Spellmatic appears in your admin sidebar immediately.
Run your first scan — Navigate to Spellmatic → Dashboard and click the blue “Scan Posts, Pages” button. The scanner processes every published post and page on your site using Harper, a lightning-fast spell-checking engine that runs entirely on your server. No content ever leaves your site during a standard scan.
Review your results — Once the scan completes, head to the Results tab. Each error shows the original word highlighted in context, a suggested replacement, and one-click buttons to Apply Fix, Dismiss, or add the word to your custom Dictionary.
Understanding Your Spell Score
After every scan, Spellmatic calculates a site-wide Spell Score displayed as a percentage ring at the top of your dashboard. Here is how to read it:
90–100% — Excellent. Your site content is virtually error-free. Only minor edge cases remain.
70–89% — Good. A handful of spelling or grammar issues exist. A quick review will bring you to perfection.
40–69% — Needs Work. There are noticeable errors across your content. We recommend a focused cleanup session.
0–39% — Poor. Significant spelling and grammar issues are present. Use the bulk fix tools (Pro) to clean up rapidly.
The score updates in real-time as you apply fixes, dismiss false positives, or add words to your dictionary.
Fixing Errors
One-click fixes — Every detected error comes with a suggested correction. Click “Apply Fix” and the change is written directly to your post or page content. The original text is preserved in a fix history so you can undo any change.
Edit the suggestion — Not happy with the suggestion? Click the replacement text field and type your own correction before applying.
Dismiss — If the flagged word is actually correct in context, click Dismiss. The error disappears from your results and will not be flagged in future scans of that content.
Add to Dictionary — Brand names, technical terms, or industry jargon that you use intentionally can be added to your site-wide custom dictionary. Once added, the word will never be flagged again across any page or post.
Undo — Changed your mind? Every applied fix shows an Undo button. Click it to revert the content to its original state instantly.
Bulk Fix (Pro)
Pro and Agency users unlock the “Fix All” button on the Results page. This processes every open error in one click — applying all suggested corrections across your entire site simultaneously. Each change is logged individually, so you can review and undo any specific fix afterward.
Bulk Fix is ideal for sites with hundreds of pages that have accumulated errors over time. What would take hours of manual editing can be resolved in seconds.
AI-Powered Scanning (Pro)
Standard scanning uses Harper for fast, rule-based spell-checking. AI scanning goes further — it understands context, catches wrong-word errors (like “their” vs. “there”), identifies awkward phrasing, and detects grammar mistakes that rule-based engines miss.
Bring Your Own Key (BYOK) — Spellmatic supports multiple AI providers. Navigate to Settings → AI Integration to connect your preferred provider:
• OpenAI (GPT-4o mini) — Fast, affordable, excellent for spelling and grammar
• Anthropic Claude (Haiku) — Strong contextual understanding
• Google Gemini Flash — Quick and cost-effective
• Grok (xAI) — Alternative AI option
Your API keys are stored encrypted on your own server. They are never sent to Spellmatic or any third party. The AI call goes directly from your server to the provider — your content stays under your control.
Toggle AI on or off — Use the AI toggle on the Scan dashboard. When enabled, each post is scanned first by Harper, then by your chosen AI provider for deeper analysis. Both sets of results appear together in the Results tab.
Scan Options & Settings
Content Types — Choose which content types to include in your scan. Free plans scan Posts and Pages. Pro plans add WooCommerce Products and Comments.
Scan Options panel — Click “Scan Options” on the dashboard to expand the filter panel. Here you can narrow your scan to specific post types or re-scan only posts that have changed since the last scan.
Weekly Digest (Pro) — Enable the automatic weekly email digest under Settings. Every week, you will receive a summary of new errors found, fixes applied, and your current Spell Score — without ever logging into WordPress.
Data Management — Under Settings, you will find a “Delete data on uninstall” checkbox. When enabled, all Spellmatic tables, options, and scan history are removed completely if you deactivate and delete the plugin. When disabled (the default), your data is preserved in case you reinstall later.
Page Builder Compatibility
Spellmatic extracts and scans the actual text from your content — not the raw shortcodes or JSON blobs your page builder stores. This means it works seamlessly with:
• Elementor — Reads widget text from Elementor’s JSON data structure
• Divi Builder — Parses Divi shortcodes and extracts readable content
• WPBakery — Processes WPBakery shortcode content
• Avada / Fusion Builder — Extracts text from Fusion shortcodes

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Spellmatic send my content to external servers?
No. Standard scanning uses Harper, which runs entirely on your WordPress server. Your content never leaves your site. If you enable AI scanning, the text is sent directly from your server to the AI provider you configured (OpenAI, Claude, etc.) using your own API key. Spellmatic never sees or stores your content.
Will it break my page builder layouts?
No. Spellmatic is built with deep awareness of how page builders store content. It extracts only the readable text for scanning, and when applying fixes, it writes corrections back into the exact position within your builder’s data structure — preserving all layout, styling, and module settings.
Can I undo a fix after applying it?
Yes. Every fix is logged with the original text preserved. Click the “Undo” button on any fixed error to revert the content to its previous state instantly.
What languages does Spellmatic support?
The core Harper engine supports English. AI scanning can handle additional languages depending on the AI provider you connect. We are actively working on expanding built-in language support in future releases.
How do API keys work with BYOK?
BYOK (Bring Your Own Key) means you provide your own API key from any supported AI provider. The key is stored encrypted in your WordPress database and never leaves your server. API calls go directly from your server to the provider. You pay the AI provider directly at their standard rates — Spellmatic does not add any markup.
