Jan. 3rd, 2018 12:35 pm
springviolets: (misc. :P)
i have written a lot!! ok not a lot a lot, but i hadn't written more than 1k since like, 2009, so i'm pleased with how much i wrote last year.

yuri on ice also got me writing stuff i had never written before lmao (puppy play, footjobs, [fem]daddy kink...). it's been fun! i have some more yoi fics in the works, too, at least one of which should be finished this week.

Series: Part 2 of always been the tower
Summary: While Morgana and Gwen are away, Merlin and Arthur will play. Purely post-boring-meetings smut with a dash of feelings. Takes place right after "always been the tower."

Summary: Phichit had heard a soft whine, and he laughed. "You didn't tell me you and Victor got a new puppy."

"Oh," Yuuri hummed, "we didn't. Vityusha just usually isn't naughty enough he needs correcting while we're talking."

He had said it so casually, and Russian has so many diminutives he can’t keep track of them--it took Phichit a second to catch up. "Yuuri, oh my god," he had hissed with scandalized delight. "Are you doing what I think you are."

Oh, thinks Beka, as her breath hitches. The green-haired girl, sporting a sweet coy smile, is now talking with another woman, a taller butch with short blond hair and a leather jacket. The club she's just played is usually mostly gay men, but trust Yulia to find the only leatherdyke and her femme in the place.

The Atlantic's 'My Family's Slave' should not end with a feast
Perhaps it wouldn't be fair to cast so much judgment on Tizon and his family. We do not know their circumstances. However, when he decided to write the piece, he had given us – the readers – the right to his story. It is no longer just his.
And as parts of the story, it is just right, even necessary, that we ask questions.
"Why did you wait that long to help?"
"Did you not earn enough to pay Lola yourself?"
"How far did you go – other than teaching her to drive a car – to try to help her?"
"Did you say sorry to Lola's relatives when you met them?"

The Enslaved Woman They Called Lola
The sad truth is that he could never fully release her, try as he might. Although my ability to understand the Filipino katulong structure that Tizon describes is clouded by my own cultural and familial context of American slavery, one thing is clear to me about all systems of bondage: emancipation is a process. Enslaved people are not so much set free as they are made free, a long and hard process of reconciliation and reparation that can span years, if not generations, if not centuries. Power, wealth, and labor transferred from one person to another are not so easily reconciled, and most often simply aren’t.

a twitter thread from @LeahPSK
"Katulong lang" = just a maid/servant. This [calling Eudocia a katulong] is the same mentality of re-labeling slaves as "laborers" as if their situation was voluntary

as i'm writing, i'm keeping in mind some dos/don'ts (like do describe everyone's skintone, not just those who are non-white) and also my own pet peeves and i'm curious what yours are! besides obvious things like constantly in distress damsels, or bad writing, or constant sexual assault, or insta-love, love triangles, etc, what threatens to make you stop reading or throw a book across the room?

or even vice versa--what's something you've seen authors warned against but that you like? for me, i actually like prologues, as long as they serve an actual purpose and are interesting.
got quite a few today so they get their own (public) post!

We Need to Talk About Women Who Regret Motherhood
And what matters even more than that is giving women the resources to cope with whatever their experience is, and the space to sort through the complex feelings that accompany it, a way for a woman to be a mother and still human, still flawed, still something other than merely an endless vessel of giving. Because as in everything, what we think we "want" is but a sliver of the picture.

Protecting Women Starts at Home - Not in Public Bathrooms
These were just a few of the more than 40 women and children whom the North Carolina Coalition Against Domestic Violence catalogued as having been shot, beaten, strangled, stabbed or run over allegedly by a husband, boyfriend, fiancé, father or stepfather during the year that North Carolina legislators began “protecting” women and children from transgender people (or from the many fakers whom we were told would materialize) in our public bathrooms. They ranged in age from just 2 up to 84.

Why does sugar in cornbread divide races in the South?

La’Wan’s corn muffin and Lupie’s cornbread are humble things. But they represent something deeper: The dividing line between black Southerners and white ones. As examples of one of the defining staples of Southern food, they also are a marker of food history that speaks volumes about origins and identity, about family and what we hold dear.
[i like sweet but not overly sweet cornbread. preferably from a skillet, sweet like creamed corn with honey on top. leftovers go in a bowl of milk.]

How were lesbians affected by the anti-LGBT Lavender Scare?
More gay men than lesbians lost their jobs and had their lives ruined because of their sexual orientation in this period, but that’s only because there were more men working the types of jobs that were targeted. Lesbians were hunted with just as much zeal. ... Even the American Civil Liberties Union did not oppose the federal government’s firing of gay and lesbian employees.

so long, lj

springviolets: (merlin. morgana: the dress)
well, with the news of there being concentration camps for gay men in chechnya, i'm deleting my lj tonight. the hardest part is going to be the communities! it seems like communities on dreamwidth are so DEAD.

i created [community profile] actuallylesbians just now! (idk if people still do this, but the name comes from a tag people used on tumblr to designated stuff that was actually by/about/for lesbians and not just... porn). any other active communities out there?

in other news, i think i'm getting into an argument with meghan murphy over here in a stupid thread where women complain about how married women are dumb, basically. and by which they mean straight married women, btw, but they don't specify that because they love to forget that lesbians exist. this is such a MASSIVE frustration of mine with (straight) feminists, and i saw it a lot in academic studies too! they'll come up with elaborate arguments or studies and just assume everyone is straight and don't think for a second how sexual orientation might impact things like, oh i don't know, marriage, orgasms, self esteem, medical health.....etc.

i wrote fic?

springviolets: (merlin. morgana: forest witch)
always be the tower
pairing: morgana/gwen, side merlin/arthur
rating: explicit (for two scenes)
word count: 14,945
summary:  One night, meaning to confront Gaius, Morgana gets the truth from Merlin instead. From there, she explores her magic and her feelings, wrestles with a darkness inside her and with what kind of power she really desires. Along the way, she gets to harass Arthur about his relationship with his manservant. (Diverges from 2x3, “The Nightmare Begins”)
The Real Reason Women Love Witches
Beneath all that glossy packaging hums the same idea that has tantalized girls for millennia: the fact that to be a witch is to be a woman with power in a world where women are often otherwise powerless.

Why We Must Dismantle the Intersex Closet

This brings me to the other, more daunting reason that it’s been hard to spread awareness about what being intersex means: Many of us have had the possibility of knowing what it’s like stolen from us. I’m referring to the fact that intersex people are routinely subjected to what have been called “normalizing” or “corrective” cosmetic genital surgeries as babies or young children, in an effort to make us … not intersex.

How US History is Taught Around the World
For instance, Herman noted, while Western textbooks tend to focus on the attackers' Muslim identities, their religious affiliations and identities go largely unmentioned in majority-Muslim countries. Turkish textbooks specifically omit the attackers' Muslim identities, while a Pakistani textbook, as quoted by Herman, simply reads, "On September 11, 2001, American Trade Center and other strategic positions were attacked by unidentified terrorists."

Should We Die?
He knew he’d lose, of course, but he wanted his candidacy to promote the cause of transhumanism—the idea that technology will allow humans to break free of their physical and mental limitations. ... He implanted a chip in his hand so he could wave himself through his front door, and he wants to get his kids chipped, too. He’d be surprised, he told me, if soon “we don’t start merging our children with machines.”

Florida Bill Letting Women Sue Doctors for Terminating Their Pregnancies Passes Out of Subcommittee
The bill initially states that only those physicians who are negligent, or fail to “obtain the informed consent” required by Florida law, may be held liable. But it then adds that “the signing of a consent form by the woman”—the proof that both doctor and patient followed Florida’s byzantine consent procedures—“does not negate the cause of action.” Instead, it only “reduce[s] the recovery of damages.” The upshot of this strange caveat is that even if a doctor complies with Florida’s “informed consent” requirements, and has proof of this compliance signed by the patient herself, the patient can still sue if she feels she did not really have the information she was owed.

4 Must-Read Books for Your February Book Club from Elle Magazine, including Why I Am Not a Feminist by Jessa Crispin

She argues against the current brand of feminism that equates progress with buying into the status quo, and calls for a reinvestment in radical, even revolutionary thinking about what feminism can mean, and do.
