This oil painting of Maggie Hamilton, 1892-93, was by James Guthrie. She was one of the “Glasgow Girls” – a talented embroiderer and painter of flowers and still-lifes

When I visited the Kelvingrove Museum and Art Gallery in Glasgow I was impressed by the visual art and sculptures – much of which is on Scottish themes. Most of my photos are details, rather than the whole paintings… Continue Reading »

A restored World War II Spitfire, weighing 2.3 tons, hangs overhead in one of the galleries at Kelvingrove Museum

One landmark I made sure I didn’t miss on my recent visit to Glasgow was the Kelvingrove Museum and Art Gallery. It was very easy to reach by walking all the way along Sauchiehall Street from the Premier Inn Buchanan Galleries hotel, over the M8 and onwards until you hit Argyll Street. A lovely walk on a crisp blue-sky day. Continue Reading »

Sauchiehall Street in Glasgow

It seems ages since I said I would share my snapshots of Glasgow in winter. I went with friends to Scotland for three ice-hockey games in late November and took hundreds of photos – but how to divide them up into batches? That has been holding me back but now I’m ready to roll (and bore you to tears, probably!)… Continue Reading »

Christmas Jumpers – a Christmas card sold in aid of Prostate Cancer UK

May everyone have a delightful Yuletide!
My charity choice for cards to send this year is Prostate Cancer UK (prostatecanceruk.org). Prostate cancer killed my husband in 2024, so it is a charity close to my heart…

Floating Heads by Sophie Cave in Glasgow’s Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum

Oh dear, I have so neglected this blog for a month or two. It’s not because I have nothing to share, but because I have too much!

I went to Glasgow by train with a few friend in November for a long weekend (for three games of ice hockey in three nights). While there I managed to visit the wonderful Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum and Glasgow Cathedral and also walked along Sauchiehall Street and the Clyde riverside.

It was great, but I took so many photographs of everything that I am taking ages to process them. However, I intend a series of blog posts in the New Year. You have been warned…

Fuchsias in my autumn garden

I’m not very good at keeping year-round interest in my garden and in the autumn little colour remains apart from the Fuchsias. they are one of my favourites to grow in pots as the grey squirrels don’t destroy them, unless by accidental collision. Continue Reading »

Rudbeckia (coneflower) at the National Botanic Garden of Wales

It is a few weeks now since I visited the National Botanic Garden of Wales with my brother and his “girls” and I am afraid I have been neglecting this blog since then. So it’s time to capture in memory the last sunshine of the autumn. Continue Reading »

Hydrangea – probably H. serrata or Mountain hydrangea at Iford Manor

A few weeks ago I visited Iford Manor in Wiltshire with my Bath-based friend Sue. It is a terraced Italianate garden on the steep south-facing slope of the Frome Valley, not far from Bradford-on-Avon. Continue Reading »

Evonne with an “E” by Rayvenn Shaleigha D’Clark (b 1995) – a portrait in bronze of her grandmother

This is my second post from Clearwell Caves in the Forest of Dean. The theme this time is the summer sculpture exhibition in the caverns, where iron ore used to be mined and where ochre pigments have been sourced since Neolithic times and continue to be extracted.

There are nearly 70 sculptures – here are just some of them that caught my eye… Continue Reading »
