I’m Steve Creek, a wildlife photographer based in Arkansas. I photograph birds, mammals, and whatever else shows up. Deer, foxes, raccoons, opossums. If it moves and it’s wild, I’m probably nearby, waiting and watching.
Most of my photography happens close to home. In my yard, along back roads, at lakes, and on wildlife refuges across Arkansas and Oklahoma. I don’t chase rare sightings or stage moments. I spend time learning patterns, habits, and behavior, then wait for the animal to do what it does naturally.
What I’m Actually Doing Out There
I don’t just take pictures. I observe.
I pay attention to where animals move, how they react to light, and what changes throughout the day. That patience is the difference between a quick photo and an image that shows behavior, intent, or interaction. Every photograph I make is about capturing a real moment that explains something about the animal and how it fits into its environment.
Sometimes that takes hours. Sometimes it takes days. Not every outing produces images, but when it does, the result feels earned.
Why This Matters
Wildlife photography isn’t just about making nice images. It’s about helping people see what exists around them and why it’s worth protecting.
I use this site to share the stories behind my photos, along with practical photography notes and field observations. I focus on real conditions, missed shots, and slow days just as much as successful ones. If my work helps someone notice wildlife they would have otherwise overlooked, or think differently about the places they live, then it’s doing what I want it to do.
Where My Work Has Appeared
Over the years, my photography has been featured in some places I’m proud of:
- National Wildlife Federation: Featured my photo for their “Backyard Wildlife Color of the Week“.
- Smithsonian Channel: My first published photo – an opossum – was featured in the episode Nature’s Vault.
- National Geographic Field Guide to the Birds of North America: Published my photo of a female Red-winged Blackbird feeding her young.
- Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries: Featured my Swamp Rabbit photo in Louisiana Wildlife Insider magazine.
- Arkansas Democrat Gazette: Interviewed for the article Bubble, Bubble: Toll, but No Real Trouble about Spittlebugs.
- Mine Kill State Park: My Bluebird photo is on an interpretive sign along the Bluebird Trail.
- KXMX Radio Station (Oklahoma): Interviewed about wildlife photography in Wildlife Photographer Finds Treasure at Wildlife Refuge.
