I am mainly on fedi these days but do need a place for longposting... also comms comms are so good...
This is a weird smell! The reviews on fragrantica are half-full of people saying it smells like rot and pickles and pencil shavings? and I wouldn't go that far but. There is definitely something, hmm, ~funky~. Which I think I like? it is a thing I would smell on purpose instead of incidentally, which I guess is what I was doing when it showed up next to me.

Mar. 19th, 2024 10:43 amFor a limited time, we're offering a free licence if you complete at least one country on our partner website, Countryness.com, which is free.
And I checked out Countryness, and it's just... a website that matches you with someone from a different country to chat with, and automatically translates the conversations, and gamifies talking to someone from every country. There doesn't seem to be any catch, there's no subscription, it's just... someone (I assume the same guy?) thought that people should be using the internet more to connect with other cultures so he made a website for it! Unfortunately it does not seem very active-- there are three people on the leaderboard, and the #1 user is, you guessed it, Steven. So like. Steven! What a guy! He really is out here making the internet he wants to see and I appreciate him!

Mar. 17th, 2024 10:50 pmSo I started playing around with the Hugo static site generator-- well actually, I'd been playing around with it for a while, including making this silly neocities website to keep my montaigneposting on, but I finally figured out how to make a few key changes in layout files-- and put together a version of a fanfic archive site with it. And, I LOVE it. There are still some things to figure out so I haven't actually replaced the Wordpress yet, but I stuck the Hugo version here while I work on it, and. I just love how easy it is to add new fic to it! All I need to do is drag a file with the right front matter into a folder, and and of the fandom and category lists that I've said it belongs to will update automatically! Even in Wordpress, I was basically doing that by hand-- I wanted to be able to decide myself which descriptive categories things go in, and present them in a list, not in chronological order, and the only way to do that was just maintain a page manually.
I still need to a) actually figure out how to insert the buttons to my own fanfic webring on the page, which is the kind of thing that is easy to do if you're handcoding the whole site but I haven't actually figured out yet for Hugo, and b) figure out comments-- this should be a thing Hugo makes really easy, because it's basically saying "insert this html on every page of this type," which is what it excels at. But the part before that will be setting up a database for commentics.
So yeah... gaze upon my website! I can put so much Content on it so easily! (I actually started pulling a whole bunch of my favourite ficlet-a-day-challenge stories that I'd wanted to give their own homes outside of a chapter of a work on AO3 for a while and added them all, which then made me realize that damn that is a LOT of fanfiction idk how someone would decide what to read if they did for some reason end up on this website, so then I added the "favourites" category which I always kinda wished was an easy thing to do on AO3! Like hey btw THESE are the ones I'm most proud of and think you should read!)

Dec. 31st, 2023 10:47 am1. Favorite fic you wrote this year
Iâm going to be a bit squirrely about what counts as âthis yearâ in some of these questions, but favourite fic written and posted entirely in 2023: do it and do it again, one of those short brainworms that hit me like a creepy, rapey truck and I hope it does the same to other people.
2. Least favorite fic you wrote this year
I like what I have of death would be a good reason, the AU where Will and Hannibal are preteen girls in competitive gymnastics, but Iâve wavered on either marking it finished or just deleting it, because Iâm not sure where to go with it or if I have the time/energy/motivation to go anywhere with it. I have just enough snatches of stuff Iâd want to be in there to hold off, but they have not coalesced into something that passes a threshold of excitement about writing it.
3. Favorite line/scene you wrote this year
OK, Iâm including Symbasis because I was still editing and posting it in 2023, and because it has the clear winner in the sandal-spanking scene, which is both my personal favourite kink scene Iâve ever written and a scene I find delightful in a JSTOR-to-AO3 Pipeline sense. Itâs in chapter 27, if anyoneâs looking, though skipping right to there might prove⊠a little confusing. But really, Iâd probably have to answer this one to the question of favourite fic Iâve written ever, so if youâre intruiged enough to read chapter 26, maybe give 1-25 a try first?
4. # of words written this year
Posted word count on AO3 is 146,594, the vast majority of which is Symbasis, but Iâll have to go with that number because trying to figure out how many words Iâve written including the beginning of the novel thing which Iâm now on my third iteration of (currently stalled at 15k) sounds exhausting.
5. Most popular fic this year
Symbasis, though thatâs really just chaptered-fic hits.
6. Least popular fic this year
A Commonplace Event, which is an extract from a previous iteration of said novel-thing, back when I thought it was going to be epistolary. The tag trifecta of rape, abortion and crucifixion doesnât seem to be the magic key to AO3 fame!
7. Fandom you enjoyed writing for the most this year
Haha. I mean.
8. Favorite character you wrote this year
Weldjebauend of Siwah! My guy! My very own blorbo! Honestly, by the time I finished writing Symbasis, Wel and Hannibal occupied as much or more of my mind as the guys from the NBC show. Obviously the relationships between the sets of characters are important, but in figuring out how to rewind Hannibal 2300 years ago, Wel was the key to everythingâ I spent SO long trying to figure out how to give a character a name recognizeably similar to âWill Graham,â and as soon as I found the sounds I needed in Egypt it was immediately obvious that Will would have been a religious leader in the ancient world, and Siwah was the obvious place to situate him for the story. Siwah is probably the #1 place Iâd like to visit in the world now, because I feel like I have this close friend whoâs from there and I want to get to know him better, even if I never write about him again. (Sometimes I wonder what heâs up to, but I think I established pretty solidly that heâs busy having a nice life in Carthage, and maybe he deserves some privacy after all heâs been through.)
9. Favorite writing song inspiration
I canât listen to music while I write :(
10. A new kink you wrote by surprise in a fic this year
Unless prompted by some sort of bingoâ which I didnât do this yearâ my characters tend to be pretty predictable in their kinks. The surprises are probably more of the unsexy variety this yearâ for instance, I wouldnât have predicted multiple fics about abortion, but here we are.
11. Something you learned about writing this year
Honestly? That it takes time and available mental real estate and that itâs OK to not have those things, and itâs OK to not write when life demands it. Writing and fanfic are really important and valuable to me. They matter, they made me more myself, life feels more interesting when Iâm letting ideas come in and go out. But I also went back to school this year, and am currently a full-time engineering student, and itâs frankly stupid to beat myself up for not writing on a day where I simply didnât have time. Yes, sure, âI didnât have timeâ is a synonym for âit wasnât a priorityâ; and it is indeed fine to have other priorities sometimes.
12. Current # of WIPs
Fic things that Iâm interested in finishing: - an AU set in the Rakhat universe of Mary Doria Russelâs The Sparrow, which I am either almost done or not nearly done depending on whether I decide itâs a one-shot suggestion of an AU, or a thing that wants to be long and have some sort of plot. - the thing Iâm referring to just as âthe AA ficâ, which I somehow lost most of but I think actually what I lost was going in the wrong direction anyway, so. - Maybe the gymnastics thing. I donât know. I donât know!!
13. Most memorable comment or review
I had a few comments this year where readers shared personal connections to the content of the storiesâ which I donât want to share publicly, but means a lot to me!
14. Favorite fic you read this year
Probably compromise by bluecarrot, which is short but gets stuck in the mind so easily.
15. Favorite fic author you read this year
Yeah itâs bluecarrot!!!!!
16. Longest fic you wrote this year
Well, if Symbasis is disqualified, apparently there are seven thousand words of death would be a good reason
17. Shortest ifc you wrote this year
Finally, a reason to mention even true, the fic narrating an event that I was weirdly certain was actually going to happen in the final episode of Succession, and then somehow did not??
18. How many fandoms did you write for this year
I guess⊠three? Hannibal, Succession, and historical RPF.
19. Favourite fandom event your participated in this year
Event free, baby! Nobody can tell me what to write!!!
20. Favorite fandom to read fic from this year
This might, shock you, butâŠ

Relationships: Chris/Walnut
Characters: Chris (Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute RPF), Walnut – Character
Additional Tags: not gonna lie, I picture human Walnut as essentially a femme Hannibal Lecter, and yes I’m picturing Crane Chris as a bird Will Graham, They’re a mess, life finds a way?, Species Swap, Power Imbalance, Xeno, Everyone Is Sapient In This AU, But Not Everyone Knows That?, dead dove do not eat, but uh there’s no bird necrophilia or cannibalism i swear, Hannibal AU, Alternate Universe – Space, Murderous Bird Wife, Do Not Do Conservation Biology Like This, This Is Not the Way, Well Murderous Human Wife But Who’s Counting, Humans are space orcs
Summary:
“At least someone meets her standards,” his supervisor had said, then looked at Chris thoughtfully.
“What,” Chris said, sensing doom.
“She likes you,” his supervisor said. “She hasn’t maimed you yet, has she?”
“Well, not yet,” Chris said awkwardly, unable to hide how his feathers were starting to ruffle up. “Give her time, ha ha.”

And yeah, this is goofy, but it’s a portrait of someone who cares so deeply about music that he wants to sit up all night talking about it with a hooker, that he’ll happily entertain calls from politicians as long as he can get them talking and thinking about music, and that was not the person I saw in the movie. I’m not sure that character was interested in talking about music with anyone. And Bradley Cooper did a genuinely great job in the conducting bits! But it was kind of just… a movie in which Bradley Cooper is surprisingly adept at conducting Mahler, with an infidelity-and-cancer-laden soap opera superimposed on top, and not much thematic connection between the two.
