Erick's stormy adventure

Some of you may have wondered how all this bad weather has affected Erick in Kentucky. Well, he has had quite an adventure.

Erick is staying in a hotel while he awaits more training. Here are some pictures he's taken from the hotel room.

The weight of the ice has knocked down power lines all over the area. Thousands are without power, and unfortunately, Erick is in the same situation. His hotel has been without  steady power for several days.

The water heater and the room heater are both electric, so Erick has been cold and un-showered for a few days.  He says the power came back on yesterday, so he was able to shower and relax. Today, however, the power is gone again.

I still talk to him several times a day. He is doing really well. He is actually having a good time because the base is closed and he hasn't had to show up for formation. He spends most of his time reading and playing Risk with his friends.

Prior to the storm, Erick visited the Patton Museum. He sent pictures. I thought I'd share.

Best Christmas Present Ever!

Over the break, Matt told Erick and me that he was building us a custom piece of furniture. Needless to say, I was thrilled! Well, today he delivered it to my apartment. It is gorgeous! I love it so much, I just had to show the whole world.

It fits in my house beautifully and matches my furniture. I have not yet finished decorating it. That will probably take days to get just right.

Here is a close-up of the bottom shelf and doors. It shows off the wood grain and the beautiful cherry stain a little better.

Matt did such a great job. It matches my style and my other furniture perfectly. He definitely does good work. (side note: Matt want me to let everyone know that he is not for hire. Don't worry, if his status changes, I'll let you know.)

Here is Matt next to his work of art.

Thanks Matt!

Today Erick is 33

Happy Birthday to you

Happy Birthday dear Erick
Happy Birthday to you.

So with Erick far far away, we took advantage of modern technology to throw him a birthday party. We set up the computer for a video conference.

We sang happy birthday, and even lit a candle in a cake, which TJ obligingly blew out for his dad.

We all watched Erick on the computer as he read the birthday cards that the kids had made for him and opened his presents. Here is a shot of my computer screen.

Altogether I'd say the party turned out a success. Happy Birthday Erick!

Our awesome Christmas with Erick

I guess it's about time to show off all the fun our family had in December while Erick was home. I had a fantastic time. Erick is a good man, and it was so nice to let him spoil us for a few weeks.

We spent most of the Christmas break at Grandma B's house.

Here are Erick, our cousin Scotty, and the kids helping grandma decorate the tree.

TJ spent most of his time playing with Grandma's nativity set and playing with Scotty.

Grandma was so much fun. She helped the kids decorate gingerbread houses and read them fun stories.

Christmas morning at Grandma B's

What does Christmas morning look like when two young families combine with one not-so-young family?

Fun with my siblings

On the Saturday after Christmas, we all gathered at Lee's house for some fun. Tracy, Lee, Erin, and Jared were all there with their families. My parents and Dave and Jamie were going to come with their families too, but the weather terrible, and it wasn't safe to travel. We missed you guys!
Most of the day we just talked and laughed and ate.

My favorite part of the day was seeing Tracy and Jared in their snow costumes before they headed out with most of the gang for some intense sledding.

Shooting rockets

Erick bought the girls rocket kits for Christmas, so before Erick left, we drove over to the high school and shot them off.
Joey's rocket was red. It shot high into the air and exploded. Erick was only able to find a small piece of it left.
Bailey's was white. It shot into the air and then landed in a tree. Erick climbed the tree to rescue it. I was very impressed with his climbing skills. I was happy to see that some of his Army training had come in handy.

A day at the salon

Yesterday I took the girls with me to the hair salon. We all got haircuts. Here I have before, during, and after shots of both Joey and Bailey. Thanks so much Emily (my dear friend and hair stylist). We had so much fun, and the girls turned out darling!

Bailey was thrilled that she is now the sister with the "long" hair.

After the girls finished their cuts, I got one too. But while I was getting it done, the girls got to do a little styling of there own.
