We spent a lovely day exploring Flat Rock Park in Columbus, GA. I had fun taking pictures of the kids.

Kolomoki Mounds state park
Our family took a little day trip to Georgia's Kolomoki Mounds state park.
The Kolomoki Mounds are the remnants of an ancient civilization that existed in what is now Georgia. Archaeologists have excavated the mounds to find lots of interesting artifacts including ceramic art depicting animals and humans along with evidence of elaborate burials. They believe that the mounds were built between 200 and 600 AD. They also believe it to be the largest (in population) city north of Mexico City in its time.
The more I read about the mounds, the more I see the words "may have been" or "perhaps," which tells me that there is still a lot to learn about this civilization.
There is a tiny cemetery on the grounds that dates to the mid-1800s.
This is called the Great Temple Mound. See my kids on top?

Providence Canyon
We enjoyed an afternoon hiking through the cliffs and canyons. The kids loved exploring and finding leaves and flowers. Joey and Bailey also brought their cameras along to document their adventure. They are becoming quite the little photographers.
Providence Canyon is known locally as Georgia's "Little Grand Canyon." The interesting thing about it is that it didn't exist at all before the 1800's. Settlers farmed this area, and the ground beneath them began wearing away at an alarming rate. Now there are no farms here, only gullies as deep as 150 feet.

Coheelee Creek Covered Bridge
I was determined to find an old covered bridge while I was living in The South. I even looked online to see where I could find one. Our family searched for this one, Coheelee Creek covered bridge, after taking a day trip to the Kolomoki Mounds. We wandered a bit and even got a little lost as we searched for it. But eventually we found it.
The far side of the bridge was blocked off by a large government work truck. It was so ugly and distracting. I had to get creative to keep it cropped out of the pictures.
The sky was gray and the Spanish moss hanging from the trees gave the area an eery feeling. I think I would have been a little scared if Erick hadn't been there with me.
According to the plaque, this bridge was built in 1891, though the concrete footings were added in the 1950's. I wish more of these quaint bridges remained. I also wish the local kids would not destroy it with graffiti. I had to edit some of the photos slightly to camouflage the obscenities. So sad.
