Lucky # 56

As promised, here is a picture of the Golden Gate Fortune Cookie factory. It is located at 56 Ross Aly. I had a difficult time finding it, but it did solve the mystery of how fortune cookies are made. If you can see in the background, there are round circles. The batter is squirted on little individual flat griddles that close like a waffle iron. They rotate around and pop open when they are done. Then this lady takes a fortune and folds the cookie over this little bar to get the shape we are all familiar with. Trivia: where were they invented? (not China)Image I wish I had known you can bring your own fortune. What would your's say?

Seperately Together

For Jeremy's graduation a few family members chipped in for a sailing class. I found a great deal for a week long class in San Francisco (I love deals!). I was quite skeptical of the location at first. The one draw back was that I had never really "clicked" with this city or its weather. (Don't worry we have now "clicked".) Could wandering around this city by myself be even tolerable? Short answer: it is now at the top of my list for places I would like to live.

We stayed in Emeryville, close to the marina where Jeremy's class was. The east bay was the perfect place for me to stay. In the evenings, I would watch the fog roll over SF, while it was sunny and warm where I was. In my previous experiences I had never packed the right clothing. This trip, I packed for 3 seasons.

I wandered all over the neighborhoods. I started with Tartine bakery in The Mission, found a pair of barely used Kenneth Cole strappy sandals at Good Will for $8.49 and hot pink Banana Republic capris for $5.49. Let's just say, at that point I knew I was in for a great week. I will be sure to take pictures of those and post them. There is a fortune cookie "factory" (two people) in china town. I love fortune cookies. In case you ever wanted to know how they are made...I will also post pictures of that. Japan town, I bought my favorite Hi-Chew candy. The texture is the best, it is between a starburst and a gummy. The green apple are probably my favorite. (Thankfully, my brother was willing to trade me a few for my mango...which I didn't love as much.) Ate at Out the Door, they had lemonade with boba (big tapioca balls) in it (they also had EXCELLENT food). At SFMOMA, I discovered that I like modern art. I even found a little redwood forest down the hill from China town on the way to the Ferry building. I won't bore you with every detail of me traipsing around the city, but let's just say I loved it and can't wait for my next trip to San Francisco!

Jeremy and I enjoyed the evenings together. We were able to see Wicked, loved it. It was also much easier to get 2nd row mezzanine seats in SF than SLC, not to mention a lot less expensive. We enjoyed dinner with my brother, his girlfriend and my mom at Burma Superstar. I am amazed at how long people stand in line to eat. I think we had to wait at least an hour and a half. We went to dinner at the Cheese Board. It is a cooperative group all working together equally. They serve one kind of pizza each day, unique and yummy.

Jeremy LOVED his sailing class. He said we couldn't have picked a better school. I think the pics will be more fun than my blabber. ImageEven though it was nice weather, they had to be in their foul weather gear because of all the chop and splash. ImageSF skyline in the background.Image

3 years done, 2 days to go

Jeremy graduated from law school just a few weeks ago, well actually it was on April 24. It took me a long time to process the pictures, find the right picture and then log on to type a blurb. (Most of the time was spent just thinking about it:).Image3 years of law school done, 2 more full days of testing and then it will all be quite official. In the meantime Jeremy is taking a class and diligently studying and to prepare him for those 2 days in late July.

Food, Glorious Food

ImageThis last week was quite a food week. It began with me making a delicious minestrone soup. I didn't happen to notice how big the recipe was till halfway through when I was transferring the soup into a stock pot in order to add the second half of the ingredients. The recipe served 10-12. needless to say, it served 4 that night, we froze 6 servings and I ate it at least three times as leftovers this week. This was just the beginning.

Jeremy and I decided to start trying a few new recipes each week and actually grocery shop for a menu. So this week we made 3 new main dishes: zucchini stuffed with quinoa, a beef and sweet potato dish (I thought it seemed African and my sister thought it was Morrocan, so either way it seemed like an ethnic dish), and pumpkin pasta with a gorgonzola sauce topped with pears and pecans. All three recipes were fantastic.Image

Then today, we did a bit of catering. Jeremy and I are in charge of activities for our church and once every six months we have a mingle instead of Sunday School. We created fruit and cheese platters. I have been wanting to make some baked Brie and this was the perfect opportunity. I placed pears on top and wrapped it in phyllo dough, tasty! Jeremy made his specialty apricot honey chevre, also a hit.Image I didn't get very many pictures...but here are a few.

Then tonight my mom and sister came over and we had whole grain waffles with a raspberry, cherry compote that my mom made, along with hazelnut Italian sodas. All I can say is, I'm glad Jeremy and I have also been making a conscious effort to get exercise everyday.
