In the grips of the current COVID–19 climate, we’re all understandably in the midst of looking at our current hygienic ways, and ideally improving it for the better of all of us!

Over the past few weeks I’ve spotted a lot of very helpful and creative projects popping up within the personal hygiene realm, and I’d love to highlight them!

Wash Your Lyrics by William Gibson is one of my favorite examples.

We’ve learned that washing your hands to the tune of Happy Birthday (some people say twice) is a great way to get the correct amount of time to have truly clean hands. Wash Your Lyrics allows you to provide a song, and with the tempo and lyrics to that song, it will give you the step by step guide to washing your hands with it!

The aptly named Broider by Max Bittker is a nifty tool for creating, and decorating, your borders.

Broider allows you to paint your borders in a one-bit style (the bit is either on or off, no colors), with a few small tools to help keep things in line: a 9x9 grid, an undo button (for people like me who never get things right the first time), and a little lock button that will keep all of your painting symmetrical.

The Generated Space is a gallery of procedural and generative art which encompasses a wide variety of techniques and methods. It was created by the wonderful developer and artist Kjetil Golid.

Debugging tools are better than ever, but some things still remain hidden to the un-observant eye… this small script is a delightful way to hear what webpages are doing behind the scenes.

Accurately named plink-plonk.js by developer Tom Hicks, this small snippet of JavaScript is a clever and simple way to create sounds from the browser whenever the webpage you’re on modifies itself in any way. (For single-page apps, this will be a lot!)

The script is activated by pasting it into your console (not always the best idea, if you can’t understand all the code). Here’s a quick video of it in action:

A lot of generative artists show off their creations with some clever curation tools that allow you to make small adjustments. This project is a great expansion on that idea.

When I think of placeholder images, I will always think of the forever wonderful placekitten and placepuppy. This project though, adds a beautiful piece of randomness, art, and joy that we’ve come to know and love from generative art.

Last week I completed a small weekend project called Always Judge a Book by its Cover. Rather write about it, I thought it would be fun to go over some of the neater pieces of tech that have gone into it and break them down into small examples.

The first, and perhaps the most obvious, is the goop effect that sits on the header and in between each of the books (alternating from white to a light grey). This is created using JS and a canvas element. (Although CSS Houdini could be a good option in the future.)

You can have a look at the code above… Ultimately, it’s a fairly simple effect that definitely looks a little more complex than its actual code.

The second little flair, which was a fun one to make, is the 3D CSS book.

The book gets its 3D effect from the CSS transform property. I used the transform-style: preserve-3d; property to really give it that semi-realistic feel. The pages are just divs with box shadows and rounded corners. And then to top it all off, an image of the cover is used on the front and back.

The inline padding-top stops the image from jumping as it loads. There are lots of thoughts on how to patch up this annoying part of loading images on the web, but I chose to stick with this old faithful method.

Synesthesia is a condition where certain senses overlap. For example, you could smell colors, or see sounds!

Bernadette Sheridan has a type of synesthesia whereby letters and numbers appear as colors within her brain (grapheme-color synesthesia). She has created a lovely map of those colors so we can experience it as well.

What Color Is Your Name? allows you to type in your name and see the colors that it produces. It’s a wonderfully simple idea grounded in Bernadette’s reality.

This is a true gem in the realm of microcode. BBC Micro Bot is an amazing tweet-bot, with a simple premise. Just @ mention it in a tweet with some BASIC code, and it will reply with an animated rendering of the result.

This project is fairly fresh, but already yielding fantastic results. I love the many ways such a small amount of code can result in something so beautiful and animated.

At this point in our lives Pokémon is, and will always be, one of the best-selling and most popular games in existance… but everyone’s attention fades with time. Still, a huge community of people continue to stick with the game and follow it through its many stages.

For me, I fell off in the last few years… BUT, that doesn’t make this amazing quiz, Pokémon Master, any less interesting and fun.

The idea is simple. If you’ve ever played the beloved “WHO’S THAT POKÉMON” game, well then you know all the rules. See the Pokémon. Guess the Pokémon. There’s added complexity in that, although the Pokémon isn’t shaded as a silhouette, it could literally be any Pokémon ever — not just the easy to guess ones.

Manifest utilizes a neat grid structure, ensuring your notes sit nice and cleanly on the page. You can click and drag, adding as many notes as you like. The pinboard streteches nicely to your whims, working great on both big and small screens.

If you’ve ever looked into shaders, then you’ve probably run into Shadertoy, a fantastic tool for building shaders in the browser, as well as a community for showing off what you’ve made. That said, Shadertoy’s aesthetic and appeal is directly targeted at developers who want the shader and its code.

CineShader, is a layer over top of Shadertoy created by Lusion. It’s a website built to share your shader with a broader audience. CineShader does this in a way that shows off more than just the art. It showcases the beauty and feel of the shader as though it’s artwork on a wall.

There are three experiments in all: The first, a cycling beat machine that you can play with your keyboard (and for the musically challenged, it will make sure your beats are in time).

The second, a triangular arpeggiator, allows you to warm and change the sounds in 2d space.

And thirdly, what could best be described as a wobble machine, which gets more and more addictive the more you play it.

Falling sand games have been around for a long time (as early as 2005, according to the Wikipedia). They provide a canvas for artful exploration, creativity, and are just all-round relaxing fun.

SandSpiel by Max Bittker is no exception. It’s a fantastic sand simulation combining a lot of great elements from the originals, from the base sand and water, through to lava, wood, fungus, and ice.

The aim of the game is to create. Pouring water and seeds onto the ground will result in plants and flowers blooming. Drop some lava onto it and it all goes up into smoke.

People are really getting creative with this… it’s well worth your time to drop into the gallery and browse the creations!

Looking through the catalog, you can recognize some of the generative algorithms that defined the art-space, from the Mandelbrot set to the Cellular Automata. Belgian game studio, creatively named Studio Waterzooi, have been hard at work on their first title: Please, Touch the Artwork.

Slated for release on iOS, The Google Play store, itch.io, and more.

I have to say, it looks like a wonderful combination of abstract art and a calming, zen gameplay with some puzzling twists.

Looking at the trailer, we can see that every piece of the game, right down to the minimalistic main character, has been inspired by different pieces of art.
