as we pulled up to the stop light gracie asked about the man standing there with a sign.
"mom, do we have to give that man money?"
"we don't have to, but we can if we want to" i told her.
"is he homeless?" she asked
"i'm not sure. he could be."
she asked me if i was going to give him any money.
i told her all the cash i had with me was a twenty and i needed it for gas.
she was quiet for a few seconds and said,
"i have something smaller than a twenty. i could give him a one dollar."
"do you want to give him a dollar?" i was surprised.
"i want you to give it to him for me" she said.
just then the light turned green and it was too late.
we drove on and i cried.
just a few days before she had asked to stop at the gas station to get a treat before a long trip.
i told her she would have to spend her own money to buy it.
she chose not to get anything because she wanted to save her money until she lost all her teeth.
she gave up getting a treat to save a dollar..
and decided to give it to a man she didn't know.
that's a moment i hope i never forget.
