Quilts From Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks

A few months ago I pieced, quilted and applied binding to this beautiful quilt for Quiltmaker Magazine.

The diagram really looks different than the actual quilt, much more mutted.

The quilt went together rather quickly and the quilting was an edge-to-edge leaf design.

The applique blocks were done by Pfaff and sent to me.

Design Wall Monday

On Tuesday!

Here's my design wall this week. A quilt for a co-worker's first grandson. She had family and friends sign a piece of paper at the first baby shower and I printed them on EQ Printables.

Some of the horizontal white pieces will have these signature blocks.

#4 for Carla's friends

It seems like it took me a very long time for this one and when I checked the time on Mabel after I finished, I saw that it was 2 hours of stitching time. Doesn't seem like a lot, but his quilt is only 39 x 53. I loaded it on Friday and played around with threads to get just the right effect and tension. Took some time off yesterday to go visit my daughter and family, and we went to the Uptown Jazz and Blues Festival last night. After a glass of wine, I didn't think I better do any more until today. So, it's finished and I love it!

It's A Quilt For Carla's Friends Again!

This is number three of the quilts that Carla made for her friends. I really like this one, it's simple, yet striking.

Design Wall Monday

I actually have something on my design wall today!

One of my guilds had a charity project this year where you drew from a basket and got either the word "blocks" or "borders." I you picked blocks, you were to put together 5" squares to make the center of a quilt top. Then you brought it to guild and gave it to someone who picked borders to finish it.

Well, I picked borders and here it the center I have to work with.....lots of different fabrics.

I'm thinking it needs a thin border to stop the madness and then a neutral. 

Janet and Mabel!

Janet came to quilt yesterday. She brought her Row-by-Row quilt from last year. It's a very pretty quilt and she did a great job. I made the 2nd row from the left.

We had a false start, as she tried a new panto, Bush Berries, and didn't like the thread or the panto. So, 2 hours later she was off to a much better start, with a lighter thread and Popcorn panto.

Jan's Bricks Quilt

A guild member who has had a multitude of medical problems posted a plea to members to finish a quilt she had started. Lish volunteered to do the piecing, I stepped up to do the quilting, and Sharon will be doing the binding.

The pattern is Bricks and she used lots of nickels from our guild exchanges.

I chose Bountiful Feathers, Lava thread and Hobbs 80/20 batting.I considered using a black batting, but decided not to. I was concerned at how the white fabrics would look.

Stacey's Civil War Quilt

Stacey started this quilt years ago and it was a block of the month at Quilter's Harvest.
By the way, Quilter's Harvest is going out of business. They have been trying to sell the business for a couple years now, and haven't had any luck, so they are just selling everything and closing their doors. It's sad that we will no longer have a quilt shop locally. There is Rossville Quilts, but it's a stretch for me to run out there on my lunch hour. Anyway, back to Stacey's quilt...

In between the time that she started this and now, she has gone back to school and gotten a degree in nursing, so her time has been spent studying rather than quilting. But, she got it back out and finished it up. There are 2 of each block in different colors and it is just lovely.

She chose Bountiful Feathers, and I used Omni Light Tan thread and Hobbs 80/20 batting.

It was a joy to quilt as it laid nice and flat. She was so tickled to show it at guild last night that she let two other members hold it up so she could see it too.  It's good to see you back at guild Stacey!

Carla's friends #2

The second quilt that Carla made for her friends is one made with oriental fabrics.

I quilted it with Vanilla Orchid panto and used Glide tan thread for a bit of shine and Hobbs 80/20 batting.

It Pays to be Carla's Friend!

Carla went on a little vacation with some of her friends who are not quilters. There was a quilt shop across from their hotel, and of course, she had to check it out. Her friends picked out fabrics and she agreed to make them each a quilt. Here are the first one all quilted. 

This first one we chose Daisy Swirl panto and I think it works very well with this quilt. Isn't the layout just spectacular? Permacore Light Sunshine thread and Hobbs 80/20 batting.

Virginia's Quilts

Here are #2 & #3 of Virginia's Christmas quilts.

I've had the #2 Brown and Green one done for a couple weeks now, but hadn't taken any pictures of it besides the one for "What's on Mabel."

I think she made one similar to this last year also and this one is just a great. I love all the different greens.

I chose Popcorn for the pantograph, and Permacore Camel thread.

This one with 1930's fabrics is just too cute. Dan said last night it would make a great baby quilt, so I'll have to remember the pattern when I need another baby quilt.

The center is Angel Wings panto, and the inner border has rick-rack. At least that's what I'm calling it because it reminds me of rick-rack.

The outer border is just a meander.

I couldn't get all of the the last row of the panto in, so I changed the butterflies to have 2 bumps on their wings instead of 3. It was a struggle to remember that each time I approached the butterflies.

Joann's Placemats

Joann made these 6 Twister placemats for her daughter's wedding next spring. They will be used on the head table. What a novel idea!

The orange piping she added really looks great.

I used Permacore Yellow and Dyed natural thread and a batting she brought.

Class reunion

Last weekend Dan and I attended our 40 year class reunion. We had a good time reconnecting with some old friends.

My quilting friend, Diane Carlson was there with her husband, Gene, who graduated with us. They sat right behind us so that was great.

We shared a dinner table with Scott and Gail McCormick , Jim and Susan Bennet, and Bruce and Melodi Mowrey.

Dave McIntosh's wife, Julie is a quilter and we talked for a long time, and she made a trip to Rossville Quilts on Saturday.

The quilt was won by one of the committee members who really wanted to win, so I'm happy for that.

Marilyn Hughes Franz, one of my classmates from Jefferson High School Class of 1972 posted this on our FB page and I thought it was worthy of sharing:

I am involved in the HONOR FLIGHT here in Lafayette. We send WWII veterans on a one day trip to Washington DC to see the WWII Memorial. We have two flights coming up. One in September and one in October. The flights leave from the Purdue airport on a charter plane early in the morning and come back that evening. We are having a fundraiser ( Tip a Soldier) at Arni's Market Square Tuesday, August 7 from 5-9. If you live in the Lafayette area, please come and support our cause. Korea and Viet Nam vets will go on future flights.  Soldiers will be there helping the waitresses and tips will be donated to the Honor Flight. Thanks everyone!

I'm planning to go there before guild tonight!

Beverly's Antique 9-Patch

This quilt took me a very long time to finish. I just wasn't into it, I guess. She wanted a little something in each nine patch and Dan suggested 8-petal flowers. That works for me, but isn't very interesting and I could only do a row and then had to step away. It does look a bit better to me seeing the entire quilt as I can now see a pattern, sort-of!
