Retail Options Trading
Master the Lifeblood of Options Trading: Edge
In trading, edge is everything—it’s the advantage that separates winners from the rest. Retail Options Trading is built around this core concept, emphasizing that without edge, no amount of strategy or risk management will lead to long-term success. Euan Sinclair and Andrew Mack provide a comprehensive framework to help retail traders uncover and cultivate edge within an otherwise efficient market.
From harvesting risk premia to identifying transient inefficiencies, this book offers practical methods for spotting opportunities where others see randomness. Readers will learn how to align their options trading process with their edge, ensuring every trade targets some quantifiable market effect.
This is not just another primer on options basics. Retail Options Trading challenges readers to think like professionals and equips them with tools to evaluate opportunities in an environment dominated by institutions. For those willing to put in the effort, this book serves as a critical manual for developing an edge—and turning it into sustainable returns.
Packed with insights drawn from hard-won experience, Retail Options Trading equips you to approach the option markets with precision, discipline, and realistic expectations.
Praise for Retail Options Trading
"Euan Sinclair puts his decades of experience as a trader, quant, and risk manager into a logically organized book for advanced retail derivatives traders. Andrew Mack takes principles from his expertise in sports betting and applies them to options markets. This easy to read book covers many topics of interest for the serious retail trader including many which aren’t covered usually at all in books. A highly recommended must read!"

Important Note for Kindle Readers:
Please note that the digital version of this book is a print replica. A print replica is a facsimile of the printed version which ensures all the LaTeX code formulas in the book appear exactly the same way across all formats. The tradeoff is that typical Kindle features / functionality are limited. The digital version has been tested on Kindle app for iPhone and PC and found to work perfectly, but some readers have reported issues when using Kindle devices. For best reader experience the authors recommend a paperback/hardcover edition.

The best introduction to options trading for retail traders
Reviewed in the United States on November 3, 2024This is hands down the best introduction to options trading for retail traders. Euan Sinclair and Andrew Mack are the real deal – active traders with actual skin in the game. Sinclair has a ton of experience in both institutional and retail trading, and his previous books on options trading are often cited as some of the best out there. Mack is well-known in the sports betting world and is also an accomplished retail trader. So unlike 99% of the trading books out there, this one is written by people who actually trade for a living and have real, actionable insights to share.
The book zooms in on the most important part of trading: finding an edge. It gives a general roadmap for where retail traders can spot market inefficiencies, then dives into specific examples on how to identify these inefficiencies and what kind of option trade setups can exploit them. This is a goldmine for anyone who wants to see what a money-making trading strategy actually looks like. None of the ideas are based on overfitting past data with a mess of indicators – it's all about clear data analysis driven by market microstructure.
There's also a solid intro to the basics of options, plus sections on risk management (with tips on position sizing using the Kelly criterion) and trading psychology. These chapters are nice extras, but as the book keeps reminding us, finding an edge is the most important concept in trading. I don’t know any other book written for retail traders that offers such a practical, realistic guide with examples for finding an edge in options trading. Highly recommended for anyone looking to level up their options trading game!

Much More Than Retail
Reviewed in the United States on August 28, 2025I've read all of Euan Sinclair's works and was excited to read his collaboration with Andrew Mack.
The book is mistitled. There are few institutions doing this level of analysis and quantitative approach to options trading. That said Andrew's contribution is absolutely key to making the concepts approachable to those running their own bank roll and/or doing so part time.
There was a hedging example that needed clarification and Andrew responded timely.
Unless you are on an institutional desk focused on volatility this is the book for you. If you are on a full-time desk this book plus Euan Sinclair's previous works will be most valuable.

Quality book
Reviewed in the United States on November 3, 2024Solid options overview by Euan and Andrew.
Mostly tailored towards short term trading (1mo or less). I will say a lot of this content can be found by watching Euan's videos on youtube... With that being said, think this book is likely written mostly by Euan with Andrew contributing the stat analysis portions (guessing)... Thought psychology section was decent as well
More $ can be made trading delta than vol, imo. But still good info to know

Disorganized draft quality book
Reviewed in the United States on November 2, 2024Starts simple with great examples but immediately jumps to advance topics never discussed. Has errors and placeholders authors never completed. Overall this book reads like authors billet points of journals

If you're serious about trading, these authors are among the few truly worth reading
Reviewed in the United States on October 31, 2024I haven't finished reading the book yet, but I can definitely attest to the benefits of learning from real practitioners rather than academics or dubious 'experts.' I've learned so much from Euan's books, so I was eager to buy this as soon as it became available. I'm sure that even if you're not into options, you'll pick up a thing or two on how to approach the markets.

A. Khan5 out of 5 starsAn awesome body of real life knowledge
Reviewed in Germany on November 10, 2024I really like the no nonsense approach of the book. It clearly says what it is or what it is not. It’s not for your if you’re very new to options. It’s definitely for you if you’re a retail options trader and have basic knowledge and understanding of options. For latter, this is worth many times the books price.

ed.gl.lu1 out of 5 starsExpectations Disappointed
Reviewed in Italy on January 28, 2025I had always appreciated the books and works of E. Sinclair, both their content and exposition, however Retail Options Trading left a lot to be desired. I do not know whether this was an intentional editorial choice to approach a more “retail” audience or an influence of the other author. In any case, the book contains vague concepts not dealt with in detail, debatable assertions not supported by any data, banal comments and quotes, superficial analyses, such as there should not be in a trading book, especially of non-linear derivatives. The book neither delves into the theoretical side, nor does it provide useful practical tips. Too bad. Funny that I read someone compare it to Dynamic Hedging by Nassim Taleb.
