- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 26 November 2025Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseExcellent as always from Bernard Cornwell.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 6 February 2024Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseThis book made a great Christmas gift for a Sharpe fan that had seen all the televised series but had never read the books. She was thrilled to receive it. The book arrived in perfect condition. The story line might be a bit formulaic by now, but for someone new to the book format stories, it’s a reasonable introduction. ✔️
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 23 October 2023Format: Kindle EditionVerified PurchaseGood story and well written, great start, then usual bunch of rogues sent on a reconnaissance mission, manage, with a Partisan Leader who is not what he says, to take on impossible odds.
Couple of glaring errors, Sharpe should not be a Major at the time, and a main character killed in the book where he was promoted Major is alive and well again. Still enjoyed the book, just spoilt a little by those errors.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 28 June 2025Format: Kindle EditionVerified PurchaseI remember watching Sharpe when I was really too young to be doing so! Later I discovered the books and have been hooked ever since. A great addition to the series with plenty of action, humour and risk. You won't go wrong reading this, and if it is your first Sharpe novel, read it and I'm sure you will go back looking for more.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 16 November 2025Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseThis is a real page turner, could not got to bed until I had finished it!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 10 October 2023Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseAnother cracking Sharpe yarn however two glaring errors.
Sharpe should still be Captain. He wasn't promoted until the end of 1812.
Lastly his long time friend who appears in this book (I wont mention who to avoid spoilers) died the previous year. Its details like this that spoil the continuity. I know the author doesn't like to re read his books and there have been a few slight errors in the past but these are on another level and detract enjoyment from an otherwise good story.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 13 February 2026Format: Kindle EditionVerified PurchaseSuper read. A lovely balance between tight small actions and the unsurprisingly big finish.
Woven together with skill as always.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 24 October 2025Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseHmm. SHARPE'S COMMAND is, I think, the weakest of the series yet, and although it's sad to admit it, it doesn't have the magical effect of earlier novels in the series, even the ones Cornwell added in this century. This book is Cornwell on autopilot, delivering a rather generic story about battling the French for control of a river in northern Spain. There's a pantomime villain, characters acting more like caricatures, and more continuity errors than you can shake a stick at. More problematic for me as a reader is the book's repetition, even at this short length: Sharpe repeatedly faces death only to be saved at the last minute by an unexpected arrival (I call this the 'Gandalf effect' after Jackson's LORD OF THE RINGS), and dialogue and thought is regularly repeated throughout. There are even a few anachronisms thrown in (Sharpe randomly calling his men guys) which I've never noticed before in a Sharpe book. It's superficially enjoyable as an action-adventure story, but it's not a keeper.
