We are in the final week now of our recruitment campaign for new volunteers to join as members of Voices4Care. Closing date for applications is Monday 9 May.

Joining will give members the chance to be part of something that can make a real difference; and influence palliative care education, research, policy and practice.

The meaningful involvement of people with a life limiting illness/palliative care needs, their carers and communities is a core priority for AIIHPC. •          people receiving palliative care
•          carers or former carers of adults with palliative care needs, (carers refers to those caring for a relative/loved one, rather than health or social care professionals), and

Shaping Palliative Care Policy using Human Rights Based Approach - Sharing Evidence Webinar

Image

AIIHPC is hosting a webinar on ‘Shaping Palliative Care Policy using a Human Rights Based Approach – Sharing Evidence’ on Tuesday 17 May, 10:00 – 11:30 via Zoom.

The COVID-19 pandemic brought about unique challenges across all aspects of society including nursing homes. The pandemic not only represents a public health crisis, but also a critical juncture for the respect and protection of human rights in this jurisdiction. In such a difficult time, human rights and guarantees of equality are of utmost importance. Nursing homes have an important contribution to make in this regard. This webinar shares the findings from a recent study on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the delivery of palliative care services in nursing homes from the perspective of rights-holders (residents, their families and staff). The webinar will discuss the key findings and recommendations arising from the study. Attendees will have an opportunity to hear from the research team, Dr John Lombard and Dr Owen Doody from University of Limerick, as well as pose questions.

AIIHPC received funding from the Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission for this project. We gratefully acknowledge the support of our consortium members, particularly, Nursing Homes Ireland and the HSE, as well as the Irish Hospice Foundation, the Age-Related Healthcare Department, Tallaght University Hospital, Medicine for the Elderly St Vincent’s University Hospital, the Decision Support Service, and AIIHPC’s Voices4Care group.

AIIHPC is delighted to support LauraLynn Ireland’s Children’s Hospice in their promotion of a postgraduate scholarship for 2022 for an MD or PhD in children’s palliative care proudly funded by LauraLynn.

The McKenna Scholarship is named in honour of Jane and Brendan McKenna, founders of LauraLynn following the tragic death of their two daughters Laura and Lynn, and it is aimed at supporting the expansion of the knowledge base in children’s palliative care.

The successful applicant will receive funding for a postgraduate degree (MD or PhD) to complete research in children’s palliative care in a Higher Education Institute in the Republic of Ireland.
It is a condition of the Scholarship that the student is affiliated with a Higher Education Institute in the Republic of Ireland and that an academic supervisor has agreed to supervise the research project in advance of the application. Funding will include an annual tax-free stipend of €18,500, a contribution to fees of €6,000 per annum, and €2,000 per year to fund research-related expenses.

The expectation is that the funding will commence in October 2022 and continue for 2 years for an MD or 3 years for a PhD. However, the commencement of funding may be deferred up until and no later than January 2023.
