Welcome to Somerset, Clanner Scum.

We've been waiting for you.

Have you met The Bruce, young Rhiannon? As far as the offworlders are concerned, she's the 'Duchess,' but nobody cares much about that around here. She'll be your guide during your brief visit, showing you to such lovely locals as 'Crushing Defeat Canyon,' 'The Mountains of Massacre,' and you can expect your passage through our atmosphere to be marked by attrition.

She's a little hellion, our Rhiannon, and has very special ways of dealing with uninvited guests. Don't take our word for it, you'll learn soon enough.

Old, and basically never accurate intro:
The Fourth Succession War Has Ended.

Image

Victory lays in the hands of the forming Federated Commonwealth.

Image

The Capellans are just hoping that Hanse doesn't come back to finish collecting his wife's Wedding Present.

This is good for you, because you are a member of Clan Bruce, the ruling dynasty of Somerset. Your world may be nowhere near the Capellan theatre, and be at least a couple jumps from the Draconis border, but considering that you're just about to take the Ducal throne of Somerset, you'll need some breathing space to properly fit into your new responsibilities.

May God be with you, Duke/Duchess, the Inner Sphere may be at peace now, but we all know how long that tends to last, and you'll need all the help dealing with the forming Federated Commonwealth's enemies that you can get.
((()))

Somerset:
Population: 20 million. (GM's Note: Arbitrarily dropping all population numbers to 1/10th. The economy of scale is too stupid otherwise.)
Technology Rating: B (Advanced, not High-Tech)
Industrial Level: B (Moderately Industrialized, not Heavily)
Raw Material Dependence: C (Self-sustaining)
Industrial Output: B (Good Output)
Agricultural Dependence: C (Modest Agriculture)

Somerset is a world whose people have a history. A history of being pissed off, deciding not to take someone else's shit, then suffering from the fact that the people giving them shit have naval/orbital supremacy, and a lot more men with guns.

Unsurprisingly, the people of Somerset are descended from Scots and Irishmen who left Earth, because they were sick of English shit.

Unfortunately, a pissing match between the Stewarts (British descended sassanach) and the Free Worlds League decided to roll over their back yard in 2305, so the Scots and Irishmen moved onto the worlds of York and Lancaster, further out, hopefully beyond the notice of other irritating and expansionist neighbours, even if they had unfortunate names.

Then in 2346 the Protectorate of Donegal demanded they join, or suffer invasion. So, lacking the numbers to resist the dozen+ system polity, the Scots and the Irish up and left. Again. This time they settled on Loxley, a more propitiously-named world.

...And then in 2378, the newly-founded Lyran Commonwealth (containing the former Protectorate of Donegal) demanded they join. When they rejected the Archon's demands, he ordered an invasion, and a brutal war broke out.

Scarcely fifteen hundred survived the war, less than one in ten of the people of Loxley, survived to flee the planet, heading even further into the Periphery, finally settling on Somerset.

After which they were edged into the Rim World's Republic, a reasonable if undesired result for them at the time, given growing Draconis and Lyran influence, until the Amaris family's ascension to dictatorial power, and Gregory Amaris' demand that all citizens of the Republic swear direct fealty to the Amaris family in 2753. Somerset sided with the Rift Republic Army against Amaris... and the SLDF came out to force submission.

When Kerensky and Amaris went to war with each other after the end of the Cameron line, as far as the Highlanders and Irishmen of Somerset were concerned, the best possible outcome was for both sides to obliterate each other. By the time Amaris was dead, Kerensky had left, and the First Succession War had begun, there were serious considerations of those on Somerset, towards making an Exodus of their own, and getting the hell away from the rest of humanity.

This nascent plan was cut short by the First and Second Succession Wars gutting the Jumpship fleets of the former members of the Star League, resulting in the impressment of privately owned Jumpships, then the destruction of many of those as well as most shipyards, to the point where Jumpships were rarely seen more than monthly so far out on the Periphery. At that point, it was generally decided that if the rest of the Inner Sphere was finally too busy to bother them when they were all at war with each other, Somerset being so small as to not even warrant a militia posting, that was just fine with the people of Somerset, by that point known as either Mersets or Sompters.

The trade off they suffered for being beyond the notice of most Spheroid Aristocrats, was the occasional pirate raid, but pirates could be fought far more easily than 'mech Regiments. Particularly when with Pirates, all one had to do was convince them that other targets were far less painful and more profitable, whereas Draconis Combine Samurai would be attacking under Orders, and those orders tended to be backed up with death threats from superior officers.

More inaccurate old intro:
But in 3030…

In 3030 everything changed. The Gray Death Legion uncovered a complete Star-League era memory core, and distributed copies throughout the Inner Sphere. Years ago, one of the Successor Lords actually made an honest effort at peace, and though it did not take throughout the Sphere, it did result in the marriage between Melissa Steiner and Hanse Davion, something bound to break the deadlock of the Succession Wars in one way or another.

Especially given how Hanse Davion gutted the Capellan Confederation as a 'wedding present' to his wife. Nobody on Somerset was expecting that, though as a nominally Lyran world (and given how much better the Lyran's under the Steiner family have treated Somerset than the RWR and the SL did, two hundred and fifty years have removed any social stigma from the idea of being 'Lyran,' though very few Mersets are actually excited about the prospect) the results of the 4th Succession War can generally be seen as something benefiting Somerset.

But that's in 3030. Now (the Quest start) is 3018, because this is an SB quest and playing through part of the MC's childhood is mandatory in such quests, don't you know?

And soon, a new:

[] Duke.
[X] Duchess.

-has ascended to power on Somerset. Having been raised in the Highlands of the Wells continent by his/her Scottish-descended uncle Thomas and Irish-descended Aunt Niamh, after his/her parents died young of:

[] Assassination.
[] Disease.
[] Accident.
[X] Pirate Raid.

Leaving him/her in their care.

Your parents died when you were:

[] Too young to remember them (Infant)
[] Barely could remember them (1-3 years)
[] Were a young child (4-6 years)
[X] Were just a child (7-9 years)

And so, in 3018, when Rhiannon Bruce is yet a child, 12 years before she is to take the throne, our Quest begins...

Reserved for Miscellaneous Quest management bits, thread rules, etc.

So, some things about this quest:

1. I will aim to update twice a week.
2. Unlike prior quests I've run, I intend to take more 'GM liberties' with determining how player ideas are carried out. A big part of what has crippled Starfly quest, is that my original intentions required a lot more psych knowledge on the part of the players than ended up showing up. I intend to take up more of that role for myself; it'll make the PC a bit less 'directly player controlled,' but will smooth over GM/player interactions a lot. That said, high-quality write-ins that show an excellent grasp of human psychology and motivations will be VERY WELL RECEIVED by the GM.
3. While combat and combat skill will be a major part of this quest, THE SOCIAL ASPECTS ARE WHERE THE POWER IS. By the war of 3039, it is entirely possible that the PC will have personally enraged both Takashi and Theodore Kurita, resulting in a massive DCMS assault on the world, or have made so many allies on the Lyran side that more than just distance behind the border makes it a foolish target, or both. What friends, enemies, rivals, partners, and potential romantic/marriage alliance interests the players make will most likely be the most essential part of the quest.
4. As part of the social aspects of this game, expect some intense character stories. Have a look at some of NSMS's quests for some idea what I mean by that, though obviously a substantially different flavor is to be expected from me.
5. At the end of the 'Prologue' arc, the PC will be expected to actually rule Somerset. They're not expected to deal with everything, but the PC will be both the Chief Executive and Chief Justice for an entire world. Expect some realistic issues to come up here, and to have the opportunity to influence the planet as a whole, both via legal power, and the economic power/initiative granted by your ducal holdings. If you as a player are fully convinced communism/socialism are the way to run a state, you won't like how I run this quest.
6. As both the social and governmental leader of Somerset, expect influence and shape the cultural values of your world by your public actions, and if they are 'outed,' your private actions as well. I have an experimental system for mapping out the world's cultural values, and how that affects things such as population growth, military recruitment, economic growth, etc. This is the only competitor for 'most powerful element of the quest' with Social connections/relationships.
7. There will be an explicit skill & trait system for defining the PC's abilities, which we will walk through as the prologue arc develops. If you as players want your character to be good at something you as players are not, pursue that skill 'in-character,' and the GM will sub in his own knowledge (or make shit up if it's something he doesn't know either) for you.
8. Voting options, particularly those in the prologue arc, can have hidden consequences that should be somewhat obvious in retrospect. As a 'spoiler' example, the PC's age when the parents die will determine how many younger siblings he/she may have.

9. I am a 'Sandbox' GM. The plot has no hard 'rails'; if the PC accomplishes little to nothing, a mostly canon (some AU elements because parts of the canon plot are retarded) plot will unfold, with Somerset becoming a Jade Falcon holding. It's possible, though difficult, to do anything from preventing the 3039 war from happening (unlikely), to preventing the Clan Invasion from ever happening (odds of doing this are statistically irrelevant), to carpet-nuking Terra to deal with Comstar/WoB once and for all (not actually very difficult, but very much not recommended. At least not before Tukayyid).

10. While being a Mechwarrior is most certainly something the PC can do (barring horrifically crippling injuries), many other skill paths may bear potent fruit. The Helm Core has just been distributed, and becoming a genius researcher may be incredibly useful. Becoming an immensely wealthy businessperson may be the best way to build up your home. Picking up a guitar and becoming a Rock Star may be the thing that puts Somerset on the map. The PC may roll insanely well on luck and discover 5 regiments worth of mothballed Royal SLDF Assault Battlemechs. Many things are possible.

Finally, the PC is descended from Scots and Irishmen. Be braced for the consequences of that.

Some characters on Somerset:

Military:
Ivor Bruce, Colonel in command of Somerset militia. Grizzled old tanker, low opinion of mech-jocks in general.
Ramsay McCallaugh, Captain, in command of Somerset's current limited armor contingent. Fought honorably in the battle of 3018.
Corporal Ike West, fire-team leader with a facility for silent movement. Very personable.
Sergeant Ailill McPherson, prodigy woodsman. Smiles too often.
PFC Alicia Fleming, Pistol Marksman & speed-shooter. Looks younger than you do, even if she's five years older.

Rhiannon The Bruce:
Age: 15
(Birthday July 11th, 3010.)

Skills:

Talents apply to a single skill, or to an entire group, as noted. Sorting is done with each Field spoilered, and each Group within that Field bolded, in an attempt to make it clear how Fields/Groups are delineated. This has been restructured as I continue to develop the system; there are still some scaling issues in need of resolution as testing continues.

Determinator (Obstacles are for subverting or overcoming!)
Danger Sense (I totally felt that coming.)
Preternatural Grace (Smooth as an android's bottom.)
Prosthetic forearm/hand. (Now in multiple flavors!)
Gorgeous (You're starting to draw looks. Also, you look like you're 18, rather than 14.)
Memory for people (You remember faces and names both. If you interact with someone directly for at least a few minutes, you'll remember their face and name for years to come.)
3D Brain (You think in three dimensions in the same way most other people don't.)
True Ambidexterity (Right hand, left hand, what's the difference? Hint: One is metal!)

Minor Traits:
Known Orphan (Strangers generally have an attitude of at least some sympathy or pity regarding your publicly known status, applies less off of Somerset.)
Big Sis (Those are your siblings, and you're going to make sure they're taken care of.)
Dedicated (You have a purpose, and you mean to see it carried out.)
Adversarial relationship with Bicycles (You can ride them, but you don't like them.)

New Avalon Meme.
Nagelring Amateur Video Meme.

Relevant NPCs:

Personal entourage/etc:
William Dunhill, personal bodyguard cum Ducal Guard commander.
Iona, younger sister (Born 3012). Math junkie, your personal shadow.
(Bodyguard, Stephen)
Conan, younger brother (Born 3015) Feisty brother, likes high places and climbing. Currently mildly estranged.
(Sorcha, bodyguard/babysitter)
Tormod, youngest brother (Born 3016) The quiet, smiley one. Beware tickle-ambushes. Happy so long as everyone is smiling.
(Midori, nurse/minder.)

'Your man': Morgan Hasek-Davion. A man of character who understands what it's like to be hurt by family. Him being big, good-looking, and knowing how to dance, is nice; it's a shame he's the heir to dozens of worlds on the far side of the Sphere.

Thomas the Bruce, Uncle, Regent, Guardian. (Born 2985). Awake. Very chill dude when Comatose.
Niamh the Bruce, Thomas' wife. (Born 2984). Tends to stress a bit over her family. Do not try to push her across the lines she will not cross. Relates to you as a worried aunt who wishes you couldn't justify pushing yourself so well.
Children:
Angus, (Born 3008. Growing slow, which in your family means he'll probably end up like your dad, physically. Helps his mother ride herd on the younger Bruce, and relates to you as a peer with different focus. Intends to go military.
Crannog, (Born late 3010). Hyperkinetic ball of energy just hitting that awkward phase of early teen growth, which probably means he'll end up more like his dad than yours. Would probably break in on Cu and Aifric's competitions if he could be pinned down to any one thing for long enough.
Fyfa, (Born 3016). Spends most of her free time playing with dolls with Wynda.
Wynda, (Born 3017). Spends most of her free time playing with dolls with Fyfa.
Ewan, (Born 3018); sometimes assists Tormod in tickle-ambushes. You don't really interact with him much.

'Entourage:'
'Mary Elizabeth Bruce:' (Born 3010), A genius, rather playful, usually waits for Rhiannon to start something before moving in to make her own mark on whatever is going on.
Cu Chulain Bruce: (Born 3009)Boisterous, athletic, distant cousin. Starting to hit his adult growth.
Aifric McHenry: (Born 3009, just after Cu) Competitive, very pretty, probably an actual genius. Probably the closest thing you have to a 'peer' amongst female friends.
Coaimhe Langley: (Born 3010) Strait-laced, friendly, organized. Is slightly intimidated by all the beautiful geniuses around her; plays mediator rather adeptly in the social circle.
Blair McCallaugh: (Born 3009) Nerdy, a tad overweight, excitable. Is actually quite fit under the bit of extra chub at this point, and is happiest when explaining things to other people.
Una Anchor: (Born 3009) Quiet, studious, impassive. Former supersoldier experiment subject. Seems to be immune to pain, is quite observant, and keeps her head in rough circumstances. Is subtly happy when her brother and friends are relaxing together after a busy day.
Luc Anchor: (Born 3010) Shy, plays the fiddle, doesn't seem to think much of himself. Has started pushing himself to try to keep up with the rest of the group lately.

Adults in entourage:
Chaplain Ariel, Chaplain attached to Thomas' command, literate with Latin, philosopher and theologian. Currently off to visit the Concordat for the first time in ~20 years.

Bodyguard detail:
Torch McCloud, survivor of the field trip bombing, skilled marksman.
Henry McCloud, Feuding survivor of the field trip bombing.
Lauren Porter: Teaches maths & sciences, also an MD. Doesn't like romantic stuff, and doesn't interact with Rhiannon much; doesn't think The Bruce needs her help much.
Miria Justice: Teaches phys-ed, basic general classes, and killed a 3-man gun team by herself during assassination attempt. Vivacious, outgoing, and tends towards good-natured harassment of people she's fond of, which includes Rhiannon.
Estoc, short blond swordsman of impressive skill, has since been trained with standard kit for the Ducal Guard and bodyguard detail.

Akio Matsumoto, Samurai and former DCMS Mechwarrior, now sworn to Rhiannon, because she honored his integrity and skill, even as an adversary.

On Somerset:
Ramsay McCallaugh, Master Sergeant, tanker. Nearly killed himself fighting alongside your parents at their final battle. Born 2990.

Celtic Carnival;
Gratia, Lead Singer, Albino with German heritage.
Estoc, short blond swordsman of impressive skill. Has since joined the Ducal Guard.

On Tharkad:
Archon Katrina Steiner; amused respect for Rhiannon, curiosity.
Nondi Steiner; begrudging respect.
Melissa Steiner; friendship, mutual thirst for knowledge.
Misha Auburn; friendship.

On New Avalon:
Hanse Davion; friend and mentor, non-openly-stated using his relationship with Rhiannon to help him get accustomed to adolescents behaving like more mature adults.

[X] Pirate Raid.

-[X] Pirates composed of dishonored DCMS members whom had fled the Combine rather than commit seppuku after a disastrous failure of a attack on a Lyran world, attacked Somerset seeking supplies and goods to survive on, Somerset, while not among the best worlds of the Commonwealth, was a rich enough target to raid for quality goods for the black market. While they were deserters, they were better equipped than most pirates, and battle hardened. The existing Somerset militia proved to be insufficient to defeat them, the then Duke and Duchess of Somerset, both being mechwarriors and owning personal mechs, rallied the remaining militia, attempting to defeat the pirates. They succeeded. But both the duke and duchess perished in the battle or shortly afterwards as battle wounds claimed them.

Wow, these people get invaded more frequently than Poland.

In any case, this looks neat. My vote:

I hope we can make enough butterflies to prevent the collapse of the FedCom. Hoping for a absolute beast of a mechwarrior for our Duke/Duchess or his heir so that we can challenge the Falcons when they come and beat them one on one.

Edit: Also, if my write in is chosen, I'm hoping that it'll give our Duke/Duchess absolute loyalty of the people of Somerset by dint of his parents dying to save them from pirates.

Okay, I'm back from work now, so I'll fill out a few more things in detail.

First, 's solid write-in AceRaptor; it's a good basic concept/idea, even if it isn't the best written.

The PC may roll insanely well on luck and discover 5 regiments worth of mothballed Royal SLDF Assault Battlemechs. Many things are possible.

Sweet another battletech dynasty quest. Feels like a coincidence when there's another one on SV. It's like a dream come true when I posted that there were opportunities for a dynasty quest in the SB quest idea thread some time ago.

Anyways, our major needs will be that we need to prepare for the War of 3039 and then the Clan War. IIRC we are smack dab in the middle of the Jade Falcon invasion corridor, slated to be hit by the second wave of the Jade Falcon invasion. It would be nice if we can prepare for the Clans. And there are shenanigans that we can do to turn the Clans' rules against them without actually breaking those rules.

Though we'll probably be rather heavily limited in how we can prepare. We likely can't pull a Kowloon (BTech fanfic series by Cannonshop over in Battletech.com forum where, basically, a Lyran world goes nuts in building up its militia, Pattons and artillery everywhere. And love guerrilla warfare)
