Product description

Review

Alison Weir makes Henry VIII's story feel like it has never been told before . . . she gets under the skin of the man who is so often dismissed as a much-married monster and gives us an altogether more nuanced, compelling and human portrayal -- Tracy Borman

As always, Alison Weir is ahead of the curve - and at the top of her game. Her wide knowledge and unparalleled understanding of the Tudor era fuels a sympathetic, but never sycophantic, portrait of England's most compelling king -- Sarah Gristwood

This is royal Tudor life both in broad scope and intimate detail and readers are in for a sumptuous journey -- Elizabeth Chadwick

What a book! Alison has done a fantastic and impressive job of bringing to life such a notorious historical figure as a multi-faceted, imperfect yet likeable and even, at times, pitiable character . . . Complex, captivating and memorable -- Tracy Rees

Having read a lot of Historical novels it was a very light-heated view of Henry and an easy read , but no where the level of Alsion Weir or even Phillipa Gregory

I have always been fascinated by Tudor history particularly around the reign of Henry VIII and read many books about him and his six wives but this one is from Henry’s perspective. Obviously nobody knows exactly what went on during this time but Weir’s attention to detail does give the reader a good insight into life in Henry’s court and you can see a different side to the man.
He was never meant to be King but Arthur’s untimely death saw Henry rise to in his eyes, greatness. In the early years of his marriage to his first wife he is seen as a loving caring husband but his obsession with needing a son changes everything. It’s ironic that his first two daughters were girls yet were seen to be unworthy of the crown yet Elizabeth was one of the greatest Queens in history.
I think Henry was at his most content in his older years, married for the sixth time he did appear to find some happiness.
An excellent book, filled with historical details and Weir’s writing flows well so it’s easy to follow. This is probably one book I’ll read again

As always Ms Weir takes you to the very heart of the Tudor court. I hear there is a Boleyn book on the way!

Much as I respect Alison Weir as an historian, I have to say that found this book far too long and rather boring and repetitive in places. The first two thirds were devoted to Henry's first two marriages and seemed to concentrate more on the grandeur and ostentation of the court, rather than say much about some of the events themselves which were the reason for such magnificence. The speed with which palaces were extended and new palaces built, complete with wondrous embellishments and intricate ceilings, was quite mind-blowing.

I appreciate that Alison refers to Henry throughout as Harry to make him sound less distant, but referring to him and his first wife as Harry and Kate irked me somewhat and sounded rather disrespectful. I doubt whether they were known by these names to many people. I also thought that some of the words and phrases used were far too modern in context. In fact, the way the book was written often sounded more liked a commentary on Henry's life rather than a story.

I have to say that I breathed a sigh of relief when I finally got to the end of the book. And although the ending was appropriate, I was rather surprised that the book ended so suddenly after all the waffle that had gone before with the references to his many near-fatal ilnesses and his remarkable rallying each time.

Sorry, Alison, I know this must have been a long labour of love for you, but I am afraid it was all just too much for me and I really struggled to get through it.

Putting things in the perspective of Henry VIII makes it still difficult to understand what was going on in his mind.
He does not come off in a good light despite Weir's attempt to get inside his head.....a place I would think was not easy to come up with positive things.
