This form is for FAITH ORGANIZATIONS. FAITH LEADERS can sign on here.
Signed by a wide variety of faith organizations, this letter urges the United States Senate to reject the "Save Our Bacon" ("SOB") amendment, Section 12006 of the Farm Bill passed by the House of Representatives, now being considered in the U.S. Senate.
Why sign: The SOB amendment would nullify laws passed by overwhelming majorities of voters in California and Massachusetts and preempt more than 600 state and local laws regulating how meat products are produced, including laws addressing disease prevention, livestock importation, and animal cruelty like extreme confinement of pigs in gestation crates for months. SOB would strip states and localities of their ability to enact such protections in the future, and halt legislative progress on farm animal welfare across the country. Opposition is broad and bipartisan: prominent conservatives and liberals alike have spoken out, and voters across the political spectrum have championed bans on gestation crates, passing them in red, blue, and purple states alike. Faith traditions across the spectrum share a concern for the unnecessary suffering of animals and for the integrity of democratic processes. This letter calls on the Senate to ensure that no version of SOB amendment is part of any Farm Bill that it passes or reconciles with the House.
Who should sign: Those who are authorized to sign on behalf of faith organizations or communities, including clergy, faith leaders, and lay leaders of faith-based organizations whose work is rooted in religious values.
