We Wish You A Merry Christmas

We went out in the cold, dark night to pick out a tree.

The girls loved decorating the tree, and played around it for hours!

We spent Christmas morning at home, then drove to New York to be with Chris' family.  The kids got matching PJs and cuddled up with Aunt Ginny after Christmas dinner.

On Boxing Day, we traveled to Brooklyn for a wonderful family dinner at Kellie and Alasdair's house.  What a great group!

Thanksgiving 2011

Gemma came home the other day from preschool with her pilgrim and Native American costumes. The children make the costumes and take turns acting out various situations relating to early Colonial life and the first Thanksgiving. Edie took one look at the costumes, remembering her own time at preschool, and said to Gemma: "What were you in the play, a Pilgrim or a Native American?" Gemma responded that she was a Native American, and asked Edie what she had been. Edie replied: "A very, very unhappy Pilgrim. I did NOT like being on that Mayflower." The "Mayflower" was a small boat they have at preschool, and apparently Edie remembers to this day that she felt nervous when the boat was rocking as it crossed the Atlantic. It is so funny what they remember!

We celebrated our Thanksgiving on the Cape with Chris' parents and our niece, Tess. It was a wonderful weekend with warm weather and lots of sunshine. On the Friday after Thanksgiving, we visited a beach in Chatham which is not far from where the Pilgrims first sighted land after their crossing!

Holiday Card Photo Shoot

We had a gorgeous day on the Cape for shooting our holiday card photos with the girls. They were cooperative and the weather was perfect! Here are a few of the photos that we didn't use for our cards this year.

Snow in October

It only snowed a few inches in Newton, but it snowed a foot or more in other parts of New England. This was a first for me - and I hope it is the last. Snow is welcome at the end of November at the earliest. And just a dusting please.

Edie and Chloe

Edie and Chloe met in preschool when they were three years old. They were just starting to get to know one another and enjoying some play dates when Chloe's family moved to Rome, Italy for just under a year. Edie really missed Chloe and we all kept in touch as best we could while they were away. When Chloe's family moved back, Edie and Chloe picked up where they left off and the rest .... is history.

ImageThey have been the best of friends since then, in school and out. They were in the same classes in Kindergarten and 1st grade, but separated, upon the recommendation of their 1st grade teacher, in 2nd grade. I will never forgot Edie on the phone with Chloe when they got their 2nd grade class lists and realized they would be in different classes - they were in tears, trying to comfort one another in their despair (!). Nina and I promised them that their friendship would survive different classrooms - and of course it has.

Gemma Finally Has a Birthday Party

Ah, the third child syndrome. No extracurricular activities, hand-me-down clothes, child barely learns how to write or color, and - oh yes - mom tries to "forget about" birthday parties for as long as possible. This year, when Gemma turned 4, my guilt finally found me and looked me straight in the eye, and made me realize that Gemma deserved a proper birthday party for a change. It took me another 6 weeks to pull it together, but it happened!

We invited some of Gemma's preschool friends to a yoga party led by their preschool teacher from last year. It was a nice, quiet party and not too taxing on this tired mom!

Apple Picking

We had some crisp, cool weather in September, and took advantage of it to do some early apple picking and other fall activities. These are among the best days of the year, and perfect for lots of photos!

Gemma's First Day of Preschool

Gemma began her 5-Day program at preschool today. I love our preschool and I especially love the 5-day program for the 4-year-olds. The lead teacher, Barbara, has been working at our preschool for almost 30 years and she has the most amazing curriculum - every week is full of wonderful play-based learning opportunities. I will be shedding more than a few tears when this year is over. But for now we have much to look forward to ...

Bike Riding on the Cape

On this day, Edie rode 11.5 miles - from the bay side of the Cape Cod Canal, under the Sagamore Bridge, to the Bourne Bridge and back. Go Edie!! (Note: Gemma did NOT just ride 11.5 miles, which is why she looks peppy and Edie looks, well.... tired.)

Gemma is 4

Our spunky Gemma turned 4 years old! What can we say about this child? She is the perfect third child - hilarious, maddening, extroverted, strong-willed, charming, determined, adorable and LOVED! Gemma is the kind of kid who walks into a room and owns it. She commands attention, for better or worse. Older children love to be with her - fifth graders want play dates with her and everyone older asks to babysit. She can drive Edie crazy with her demands and need to control everything, but she can also be the perfect playmate for her older sister. As hard to manage as Gemma can be at home, she is a wonderful preschool student and friend. She enjoys her independence at school and loves interacting with her peers. She continues to be our little gourmand - eating shellfish and borscht, brussel sprouts and sweet potatoes, blue cheese, olives, anything with a strong flavor. Pizza or mac and cheese - not so much! She loves her stuffed animals - especially her horde of bunnies that must, and I mean MUST, accompany her to bed at night. We are still, after almost three years, trying to get her to sleep through the night. Chris and I are at wits end, but we know some day it will happen. In the meantime, we laugh, we cry - we thank our lucky stars that we were given the blessing of this child who has truly made our family complete.

Stormy Weather: Our Visit With Hurricane Irene

Once again, our end-of-summer family vacation was interrupted by the threat of a major hurricane! In 2010, it was a hurricane that caused a huge ruckus before meandering in as a lightly blowing summer breeze... I already forgot its unmemorable name... but the hysteria around it caused us to evacuate and return early to Newton. This year, when Hurricane Irene started making a nuisance in the Caribbean, we wanted nothing to do with her. It was Gemma's birthday weekend as well as the start of our one week family vacation together. We had just purchased new bikes and were ready to hit the Rail Trail on the Cape. We weren't leaving this time - not a chance.

As it turned out, Irene was less than a hurricane, but more than a gentle summer breeze. She proved to be a very strong tropical storm, almost a Cat 1 hurricane, and it was interesting to see what happens in Cotuit when the wind really starts to blow. The winds were fierce, and because our house is on the water the gusts can be pretty nasty. We lost power quickly. The winds blew hard (VERY noisy) for almost 24 hours. The storm surge was crazy! We think the water only came up 5 feet or so above normal high tide - we can only imagine what things looked like after Hurricane Bob when there was a 14-15 foot surge. That's the town dock underwater - during the storm all of the floating docks attached to the main dock broke free and were swept away.

Image
The storm hit on Sunday, August 28, and since we were locked inside all day with no electricity, we had a nice birthday celebration for Gemma. We improvised with food - cooking a bit on the grill in back - and opening her presents a day early. She and Edie were happy as could be to have a day inside.

Image
Image
Nighttime in the dark - not so fun. We went to bed at 8:30pm, and spent the better part of the night listening to the howling winds. We woke up to a beautiful day on Monday. It was cooler and glorious outside. Unfortunately, we soon ascertained that we would be without power for days. The nice woman in the lone utility pickup truck was not encouraging. We surveyed the damage in Cotuit, noting the sad state of several boats that came off their moorings.

Image
Image
Dejectedly, we set to the task of emptying our refrigerator and freezer, and packing to return, in defeat, to Newton while waiting for power to be restored. But then, following a fabulous bike ride, we were sitting at the beach at 6pm and, looking out to sea in the late afternoon sun, we got ahold of our senses and realized we couldn't leave - not with the prospect of a gorgeous week ahead. Chris called down to a resort in Chatham, got us a room for the night, and we quickly threw a few things in the car, loaded our bikes and took off. We spent two nights and two days in Chatham, swimming in the pool, bike riding, and enjoying our lovely surroundings. We ventured back to Cotuit on Thursday, and again could not bring ourselves to return to Newton. We settled in for another dark night. But National Grid, our electrical provider, smiled upon us and at 2am in the morning power was restored. And our vacation continued!!
