TrueCrypt is free, open-source disk encryption software.
It uses stronger encryption than FileVault (built into Mac OS X) and allows the encryption of entire volumes and partitions.
Make sure you choose the right download for your OS version and CPU type.

TrueCrypt is 32 bit and not maintained.
VeraCrypt is the successor to TrueCrypt

Wow. According to the SourceForge page for TrueCrypt, this version is from 2014.

Just tried to install it and it failed with the message "Needs 10.4 or later".

TrueCrypt is no longer being developed and the developers state that using encrypted containers may no longer be secure.
From the developer's website:
"WARNING: Using TrueCrypt is not secure as it may contain unfixed security issues
The development of TrueCrypt was ended in 5/2014 after Microsoft terminated support of Windows XP. Windows 8/7/Vista and later offer integrated support for encrypted disks and virtual disk images. Such integrated support is also available on other platforms. You should migrate any data encrypted by TrueCrypt to encrypted disks or virtual disk images supported on your platform."
