There is potential for a king tide this weekend. King tides are extreme high tides that occur when the moon is closest to Earth, typically during a full or new moon. They occur in Pinellas County and have caused flooding on roadways in the past.

If you encounter flooded roads along the coast, do not drive through them. Salt water can damage or disable your car and wake from cars and trucks damages homes and businesses. #FloodplainFriday

Native plants keep your lawn healthy & prevent algae from filling ponds & lakes. Waterways & storm drains clogged with excess nutrients, grass clippings & leaves cause algae blooms & fish kills. Skip the fertilizer & plant native! bit.ly/UF-IFAS_DevBet… #FloodplainFriday

Help prevent flooding and pollution by working with us to keep storm drains and swales clear. Swales prevent flooding by giving rain a place to go. When storm drains and swales get clogged with debris they can lead to flooded streets, yards, and even homes.

Both FEMA and the County develop flood maps. These are used to determine flood risks, which guide development and construction. Data gathered from previous storms helps plan for future conditions.  Learn more at floodmaps.pinellas.gov

If you're building new, don't just meet the minimum requirements. Exceed them. Every dollar you invest in building stronger can save you $6 in future flood damages.

Permits protect you and others by ensuring all proposed work complies with current construction codes, standards, and methods. Once it's built, talk to a flood insurance agent to make sure you have the right coverage at the right price.
