    Since I'm investing in deep tech & critical national sectors via our fund @humbavc, I wanted to better understand if deep tech is VC-fundable. So, I did what any engineer would: I analyzed data! TLDR: deep tech is probably the best place to invest today.

    I'm shocked that Zoom crushed Google in enterprise video conferencing. Google: 1) owns calendaring, 2) has a video conferencing product, 3) has built video products at incredible scale, & 4) has many of the best engs on earth. And yet Hangouts is much glitchier/worse than Zoom.

    Common advice I got when I became a VC: "Don't sent founders direct feedback. They'll resent you and won't work with you in the future. Be vague to maintain the option to invest later." Me (internally): "Lame. People deserve good feedback. Let's just see what happens.." Result:

    I read the news that Sam Altman is joining Microsoft, and the first thing I thought about is Paul Graham's description of Sam: "You could parachute him into an island full of cannibals and come back in 5 years and he'd be the king." So basically 5 years until he's CEO?

    When I entered VC, I thought founders would want my help with: - algorithms - sw architecture - advice on leveraging data 😂 Here's what they usually want: - recruiting help - best practices/"what've you seen in this situation?" - someone who believes in them - emotional support

    Pricing tells a story. - Low price -> product isn't that valuable - High price -> this is a premium product - Freemium -> need time to see value - $/seat -> every user gets value - $/team -> the value is for teams, not users - $/tx -> value on every tx What do your prices say?

    In 2010, a tweet reply to an Uber job post led to Ryan Graves becoming Uber's first hire. That tweet captured ~$1b of value. Now that Elon Musk has moved to TX, I would like to nominate this as one of the most value destructive tweets of all time. Billions in tax revenue, gone.
