I stopped doing CV research because I saw the impact my work was having. I loved the work but the military applications and privacy concerns eventually became impossible to ignore.

What's an example of a situation where you think someone should decide not to submit their paper due to Broader Impacts reasons?

“We shouldn’t have to think about the societal impact of our work because it’s hard and other people can do it for us” is a really bad argument.

To be clear, I don't think this is a positive step. Societal impacts of AI is a tough field, and there are researchers and organizations that study it professionally. Most authors do not have expertise in the area and won't do good enough scholarship to say something meaningful.

To be fair though i should have a lot of humility here. For most of grad school I bought in to the myth that science is apolitical and research is objectively moral and good no matter what the subject is.

But basically all facial recognition work would not get published if we took Broader Impacts sections seriously. There is almost no upside and enormous downside risk.

Possible but hardly inevitable. It becomes moderately more likely as people call it absurd and fail to take precautions against it, like checking for sudden drops in the loss function and suspending training. Mostly, though, this is not a necessary postulate of a doom story.

Hey, important context to this: 1. After an all-department email thread of Pedro defending James Damore and condescending to women in the department, our union filed a successful grievance for sexual harassment and creating a hostile work environment

Anima, the NIPS name change was a terrible idea, and the community properly rejected it. What's sad is that in the end you still managed to get the acronym changed to the current clunky, confusion-promoting one.

Just know when engaging with Pedro, he's probably sexist, he's likes trolling, and he probably isn't engaging with you in good faith. I don't know if the right approach is to argue or to not feed the trolls but I just want all of you to be prepared

Doesn’t matter what I think! At this point @alexeyab84 has the canonical version of darknet and yolo, he’s put a ton of work into it and everyone uses it, not mine haha.

    3. Pedro has admitted a number of women to advise. Many of them left for other advisers or left the program altogether (not uncommon) but from what I can tell he has only advised a single woman through completing her PhD
