TustFun: Glory Scarfs by Shane Sakkeus & Jonathan Zawada

Image
Image

according to the artists: Inspired by nature, science and the Apocalypse, the Glory Scarfs show a spectacular display of colour, pattern and mathematics.
An evolution from our previous ranges of hand dyed scarfs, each one is a mathematically valid fractal, painstakingly created by entering a series of numbers and equations into a computer, creating a potentially infinite variety of form, colour and detail bringing the skill and technique of handcraft into the digital age.
This process means each individual scarf is based upon a completely unique equation and can never be replicated. As in nature, a rare organic creation digitally captured.

Thoughts on Democracy

The Wolfsonian, a museum based in Miami, approached Experiment Jetset to participate in 'Thought on Democracy', a poster exhibition revolving around a series of paintings that Rockwell created in 1943, based on Roosevelt's 'Four Freedoms' speech from 1941. (The freedoms addressed in that speech were 'freedom of speech', 'freedom of religion', 'freedom from want', and 'freedom from fear').

No Poetry To Recite

text is from, according to the Experiment Jetset website: 'Stefan Themerson en de Taal' (Stefan Themerson on Language). In one of the scenes, the Polish-born writer, film maker, publisher and poet Stefan Themerson (1910-1988) is shown reciting a paragraph from his novel 'Bayamus and the Theatre of Semantic Poetry' (1949):

"My lord archbishop; your excellencies, your graces; my lords, ladies and gentlemen, men and women, children; embryos, if any; spermatozoa reclining at the edge of your chairs; all living cells; bacteria; viruses; molecules of air, and dust, and water... I feel much honoured in being asked to address you all, and to recite poetry – but I have no poetry to recite."

I love the Domestic Vacations series by Julie Blackmon. Quirky and fun yet revealing of the 'everyday' expectations of modern family situations, Blackmon states:

"These images are both fictional and auto-biographical, and reflect not only our lives today and as children growing up in a large family, but also move beyond the documentary to explore the fantastic elements of our everyday lives, both imagined and real. The stress, the chaos, and the need to simultaneously escape and connect are issue that I investigate in this body of work. We live in a culture where we are both “child centered” and “self-obsessed.” The struggle between living in the moment versus escaping to another reality is intense since these two opposites strive to dominate. Caught in the swirl of soccer practices, play dates, work, and trying to find our way in our “make-over” culture, we must still create the space to find ourselves. The expectations of family life have never been more at odds with each other. These issues, as well as the relationship between the domestic landscape of the past and present, are issues I have explored in these photographs."

according to Suzuki: Japanese "Women who are immersed in the culture of “cuteness”define themselves and present themselves to society as objects of “cuteness”. Being“cute”is the most important value for Japanese young women. But aren’t they losing themselves and their own identities and personalities by trying to become objects of masculine society’s desire for“cuteness”?"

For Breathing In A House, Chuen rented out an apartment in Busan, Korea where he carried on his normal living routine, while also collecting all of his breath in transparent plastic bags until they consumed the entire living space. The process took ten days to complete from september 1st to 10th, 2006.
