Musique du Vent

Musique du Vent

Kyle McDonald

Reclaiming the entropy of unused dryer heat from a vent outside a freshman dorm, redirecting it into an accordion.

During the early Winter, the vent creates a small grassy space surrounded by snow. In March, it's mostly thick mud, but still unexpectedly warm and inviting.

Jason Rankins plays first, generating some material for an ambient piece he's working on. I play afterwards, exploring resonances. Finally, I held the door for a curious passerby.

The accordion was mounted using rope and wood, with some trash bags and duct tape to seal the edges.

James Miglietta was a huge help in measuring/cutting/fitting the adapter to the unusually shaped vent. In the future I'd opt for less wood and more vinyl/plastic for redirecting the air.

Installed around 7:30 PM, a friend alerted me at 11:00 PM that it was missing. We found it in a nearby dumpster. The campus police stopped by as we pulled it out: "Are you alright?" "Yes, we just lost an accordion." "Oh, ok."
