When I picked Avery up from school on January 16th, she felt a little warm. I'd taken her temp and gotten a 99 degree reading. My dad stopped by that afternoon to hang out with us, and we were deep into a game of bouncy ball when Avery announced that her head kind of hurt. Her legs kinda also hurt. She'd been running around fetching balls, and when I took her temp it was 101. I told my dad I was worried it was the flu, so we headed off to Nitehawk. I didn't want John to actually go in for fear of him getting some weird sickness, so my dad managed to entertain him in the car for about 45 minutes while Avery got her positive flu test results.
This is the face of Type A Flu
My village came to my rescue - Jeni took John home for the night to keep him away from it, and to watch him while I worked the following day.
Randall was out of town, and I was fully prepared to tend to Avery while working. My mom offered to come over to spend some time with her, and while I put up a fight my mom eventually won.
Somehow I got no pics of my mom with her, but man was that a highlight. My mom arrived with a card, balloons, and a goodie bag of fun distractions. When she left, though, Avery was asleep on her lap.
Staying busy while mama worked
Poor kiddo
My dad arrived in the afternoon - also against my protests. He also had a card and a balloon, and Avery was just tickled. They spent the afternoon creating slime art.
After 2 days of being holed up with sicky Avery, Randall was home, John needed a haircut, and I needed an outing.
We arrived at Fantastic Sam's and learned we were at a 30 minute wait. Hmm... I snapped this pic because John has been such a mimic lately. The week prior, Randall had been standing against a cabinet in the kitchen with his ankles crossed. John stood right next to him, leaned against the cabinet, and struggled to get the ankle cross. At Fantastic Sam's, I'd sat on the couch and put the diaper bag in the seat next to me fully expecting John to be in explorer mode. Nope, he shoved the diaper bag towards me with a "MOVE" and sat down on the couch just like me.
There was really no way we were going to make it through the 30 minute wait....not with John touching every shampoo, conditioner, and product bottle they had on display. He'd touch with one finger, say "one finger" and then announce "broke" like he'd broken it. Randall checked Super Cuts, and we could get in there pretty immediately. Off we went.
Randall is always the one to take John for haircuts, so I was a little stumped at the questions. The first decision was whether he'd sit in my lap or by himself. I opted for by himself, hoping I'd get that 10 minutes of timidness from him vs the wrestled bear war we have when I try to hold him. It worked great! He was super still and got a great hair cut...and a lollipop!
With him occupied with a lollipop I managed to go get Randall pho for dinner and Avery/John/me hummus and salad from the Greek restaurant. It was a very successful evening!
Sunday before church, Baby Shark was in rotation. I love this video because (1) his snaps at the beginning (2) his smile and (3) that he sits on the floor to mimic me.
Avery had dropped her fever by Saturday wake-up, so we planned on church and swim for Sunday. She was still a little weak but so much better. I hate seeing her sick :(
More Baby Shark + John asking for more bar.... "Boogie's bar" aka one of Avery's granola bars. He's picked up the "Boogie" nickname for her.
