꾸준히 모으고, 그 배후를 파헤치고 분석한다. 이를 통해 불편함의 뿌리에서 개인의 정체성이 사회와 충돌하거나 사회에 포섭되는 지점을 찾는다. &lt;10987너654나32우리1&gt;에 영향을 미친 불편한 일상은 애플의 신제품 발표다. 화려한 미래, 더 나아진 일상을 담보해 줄 것만 같은 발표를 보고 있으면 기분이 설렌다. 끝이 .99로 되어 있는 값을 주고 교환하면 그들이 제시한 신세계가 내 것이 될 것만 같다. 하루하루가 더 나은 내일이 될 것 같고 흠 없는 일상에서 참된 복지를 찾을 수 있을 것만 같다. 우선 발표자들의 목소리에서 시작해 보자. 군더더기 없이 깨끗하고 마치 어디에도 구멍이 없는 것 같이 명료하고 아름다운 발음. 뭐가 됐든 나와는 다른, 대리석 기념비 같은 음성이다. 그 음성이 말하는 “2배 밝아진, 더욱 더 빨라진, 우리가 사랑하는” 같은 수사가 나한테 어떤 역할을 하는지 궁금해서 그 음성들을 모으고 재배치했다. 그 숫자들이 카운트다운으로 전환되고, 강박적인 비교급들이 더욱더 끝으로 치달을 때 그 열차에는 누가 실려 있고, 종착지에는 어떤 욕망이 있는지 보고 싶었다. 하지만 나도 애플이 제시하는 더 밝아지고 더 빨라진 유토피아에 속해 있는 것은 아닐까? 내가 나와 분리된 외부라고 생각하는 애플은 이미 내 일부가 된 것은 아닐까? 나는 이미 너에게 속해 있는 것은 아닐까? 누가 누구를 소유하고, 이 관계를 통제하고 있을까? 너와의 관계 속에서 맥락 지어진 내가 아닌 오롯이 나로서 존재하는 시간을 찾을 수 있을까? 우리의 관계 그 외부를 볼 수 있을까? 나는 항상 연결 되어있는 상태에 지친 게 분명하다. 내가 항상 붙어 사는 이 기계들과, 기술들과, 애플과, 신자유주의 후기 자본주의와 분리된 상태를 상상해 본다(상상해 보려고 시도한다). 이것들이 맞물려 작동하는 거대한 기계가 내게 부여한 사고방식의 외부를 보고 싶다. 내부에서 너무 오래, 아마도 평생을 거주한 사람이 외부를 상상하는 방법은 뭐가 있을까? 나는 매일 같이 너의 집(애플스토어라고 불리는 공간)에 가서 너에게 이별 편지를 쓰는 일을 했다. 로스앤젤레스에서, 또 서울에서. 너와 내가 헤어져야 하는 이유, 헤어지고 싶은 이유, 헤어진다고 했을 때 걱정되는 것들을 너와 얼굴을 맞대고 이야기했다. 전시장 입구의 반대편 끝에 내장 같은 좁고 내밀한 공간을 만들고 그곳에서 욕망을 다시 써 본다. 앞과 유사한 말을 반복하더라도 이곳에서 나는 너에게 소리를 지른다. 귀를 막고 이야기하면 자신의 목소리를 귀를 통해서가 아니라 몸 전체에 공명해서 들을 수 있다. 그렇게 자신의 음성이 몸 구석구석을 돌아 내부를 훑는다. 이곳에는 창문으로 여과된 자연광이 들어오고, 손 글씨가 있고, 감정적인 언어들이 채워져 있다. 전시 공간과 날것의 현실 공간을 구분하는 울타리에는 내부에서 외부를 상상하는 방법을 Yin, 커피 강 Coffee Kang Artist's Note: Imagining Us Without You written by Woohee Cho My work starts with the discomfort I encounter in my daily life. I carefully collect uncomfortable moments, and then I dig, observe and examine the context behind them. Through this, I tried to figure out the sources of uncomfortable experiences and find the spots where individual identity collides with or is merged by society. The uncomfortable moment that influenced 10987YOU654ME32US1 is the presentation of Apple's new product. It's exciting to see their presentations that promise a brighter future and a better life. I feel like if I pay a price that ends in 99, the new world they've described would be mine. I feel like every day will be a better tomorrow, and genuine well-being can be achieved in a flawless day-to-day life. Let's start with the presenters' voices. Pristine, clear, beautifully articulated, as if there were no pores in it. Its texture is completely different from mine. I gather and rearrange them to see what their rhetoric–two times brighter, even faster, we love–does for me, because I'm curious about what it does for them. I want to see who's on that train, what kind of desire is at the end, when the numbers turn into a countdown, and the obsessive comparives reach ever higher. But, what if I belong to the brighter, faster utopia that Apple presents? What if the Apple I perceive as exterior, detached from me, is already a part of me? What if I already belong to you? Who owns whom, who controls this relationship? Will I ever find time to be just me, not the version of me that is contextualized in this relationship with you? Can I see outside of our relationship? It's clear that I'm tired of being connected all the time. I want to imagine (try to imagine) a state of separation from these machines, from technology, from Apple, from neo-liberal late capitalism that I'm always tethered to. I want to see the outside of the ways of thinking that these massive machines have imposed on me. How does someone who has lived inside for so long, perhaps their entire life, imagine the outside? I went to your house, the space called the Apple Store, every day and wrote you a break-up letter. In Los Angeles, and also in Seoul, I shared with you, face to face, the reasons why we’d better break up, why I want to break up, and the things I was worried about when we finally did. At the other end of the entrance to the exhibition space, I create a narrow, intimate space like a gut in which I rewrite my desires. Here I shout at you, even if I repeat something similar to what I said before. When you talk with your ears closed, you can hear your own voice not through your ears, but by resonating throughout your body. In this way, your voice travels around every corner of your body, scanning the interior. It is filled with natural light filtered through the windows, with handwritten poetries, and with emotions. On the fence that separates the exhibition space from the raw reality, I write how I imagine the outside from the inside. Here I want to break up with you while we scream together. It aims to envision the Whitney Museum of American Art as a gay cruising site, in relation to its location's (meatpacking district and pier) history. The participant’s handwritten memo (Like: Pluck a flower / Love: Water Flower daily)&nbsp;on relationship is drawn on left side, and my hand writing on how I planned/negotiated performance is drawn on the right side. Inside, our ears are engraved as proof of the participatory performance at Whitney. This bathroom stall installation has two glory holes on both sides. Through the hole, the audience can see two photos on the wall. On the left, it's the photo he took of me on the subway. On the right, it's the photo I took of him. First, I wanted to see the show together, and install my sticker, referencing Whitney's admission ticket. We were able todo this. It's now on view at Whitney. Second, I wanted to have "intimate time" with him and take photos of our body in museum toilet. However, he didn't want to perform this. It's because it was crowded and/or I couldn't explain well enough to persuade him. Rather than partaking in an already-established exhibition that may provide institutional validation within the art world, Nomad Pavilion aims to provide space for those who feel excluded from mainstream discourse. It questions conventional categories, the construct of validation, and systematic infrastructures. Nomad Pavilion is dedicated to supporting emerging artists of all race, color, religion, gender identity, age, national or ethnic origin, disability, marital status, sexual orientation, or veteran status. Open Call For its inaugural exhibition, Nomad Pavilion sent out an Open Call for artists who define themselves as “nomadic” to submit works that are “non-material,” also in their own definitions. Rather than debating who should be included and who should not, we debated how we could accommodate everyone in the best way possible.
