Friday Finish!

This week I tried a comfort pillow. It is something the kids can hug and use as a pillow, so perfect for kids who might have to go to a shelter in an emergency. It is fairly easy to put together and can be done in different types of fabrics. I hand stitched the details, by using a tighter blanket stitch, so it is durable and will hold up to snuggles. I do need to tweak the pattern, his ears are too pointy, so I will round them off.

Image

It has been too cold to get out for walks, so we go for rides along the ocean towns to enjoy the views. The cove at the point was frozen over.

Image

At home I have had a lot of birds visiting the feeders and for that reason, more visits from the hawk. This guy was a big one, he is way up on a tall tree, half way across the yard.

Image

And lots of snow, for once it didn't rain and the snow has stayed. The bad thing is, the cold has made the snow hard and dense, so it's too much for Bean to play in.

Image

Today we got out for another ride and were able to see the remains of a shipwreck on the beach. This is the area that has the breakaway, that is being repaired. The storms have uncovered this ship and it is estimated to be about 40 feet wide and 100 foot long, but no other data on what ship.

Image

The rest of the ship is in the water, under sand. It's amazing to see and wonder what it was like, before it went down.

I hope you all had a nice week and not snowed in. We are missing the next big one that is hitting the south, but still under frigid cold conditions. A great time to stay inside and work on projects.

Friday Finish!

This week I got another idea, like I need any new ones. But this one is something I can do in my spare time, use up excess fabrics and do something good for others. I found some patterns for little teddy bears and made up a few to try them out.

I read that police take stuffed toys to give to kids in crisis and also at shelters. They like small items that the kids can carry easily. I will have to check the local stations and find some shelters, to see what they take and what materials I can use. If anyone has experience with this and knows of places in the New England area, I would love your feedback.

I have collected different ideas, so I will try some to see what works best and easiest to accomplish. Another idea is animal head pillows, something easy to make and something the kids can hold and use as a pillow in the shelters. The original pattern I found for the bears can be found at, Shiny Happy World.

I also finished punching my hearts, now I need to figure out what to do with them. I may make a garland with them.

Image

We got enough snow last week, that I finally got to try out my new cross country skis. Bean loves running around with me, but also wants me to play ball, which is hard to do on skis.

Image

We always get more activity at the feeder, not much to eat in the winter. This White-breasted Nuthatch decided to hang out with me on the porch.

Image

I guess it felt safe with me there, so it took a little nap.

Image

I also got peanuts, the Blue Jays love them and they are gone in minutes.

Today we did some shopping before the mobs took over. We are expected to get snow starting Sunday afternoon, so we are all set when it hits.

I hope everyone is staying safe this weekend, I know a lot of you will be hit with various storms as it comes through.

Friday finishes!

This week I wanted to work on a Valentine project, but didn't have enough time to finish. I have a lot of loose threads and wanted to use them up in a project. This pile is from two smaller boxes and I still have another to go through. With the prices of thread going up, it is nice to use what I have.

Image

I also wanted to try something new for charity. I have been looking at different ideas and the bear was one, that is simple and quick. I made this one up, this afternoon. I used a template that I made out of card stock and traced around that, onto the fabric with a washable marker. When I finished with the face features, I turned it over on the light pad and retraced the outline for sewing.

Not perfect and I don't like the way the side seam came out, so I watched a video on the ladder stitch, so I will try that on the next one. I have lots of extra fabrics, so this is a great project to use them up and help others. I also forgot to add stitched claws on the hands and feet.

Here is one version, from Wendi's, Shiny Happy World. You can also search online for patterns. I used one that had more curved arms and legs, but I changed them a bit.

Image

Last weekend we went to the backside of a pond, where there is a private beach. We paddle in the inner cove, but this area is nice at low tide since we could walk along the inner cove and on the other side of the dirt road, is the ocean.

We also stopped in the beach parking lot and caught a group of Brandts and ducks. Then we stopped at the other end of the pond, but no birds were around.

Image

Our last stop was at the marsh, were I caught a few visitors in the smaller pond.

I was busy this week, putting all the Christmas away. I have less of Valentines, so the house looks bare. For now I want to concentrate on getting old projects done, and ones for summer. I hope you all had a good week.

Friday finish!

This week I finished the other Christmas pillow. It was from a design in my Christmas patterns booklet. I did the originals in rug hooking. They are fun to do in any medium and stitchery was something I never did with them. I liked using fun colors, since this is a whimsical design. I used glitter yarn for the edging.

Image

Last week we spent time at the island beaches. It was a little cooler, but still nice to be out.

Image

We spotted this starfish on the beach, it had washed in with the tide, so we threw it back in the water and hopefully it survived.

Image

I also found a few treasures  on the beach, including a little ceramic dog.

Image

This cove always has wildfowl, that winter in our area.

Image

At another area I spotted a lot of White throated sparrows.

Image

Today was a warmer day, so we went to the park for a walk. There was a bit of mud and some leftover ice, but we were able to walk along the dryer paths and got in 6 miles. A bit more than I have done in awhile, but it was worth a few stiff muscles.

Image

After we drove the breakaway and saw that they were dredging the channel. The past storms had washed away all the stone borders and poured sand into the channel, which is where the boats come out to the ocean. They are doubling up on the rocks and getting the excess sand out of the channel, to get the depth back.

Image

And we got to enjoy watching the Long-tailed ducks, diving for fish in the channel. I think these are young ones, they are a bit mottled in color.

I hope you enjoyed your week and are enjoying nicer temperatures, even if for a short while.

Happy New Year!

With the holidays, I haven't had much time for crafting. I have a little project I started, so I will finish that and get back to my unfinished projects.

With Bill having days off, we get out more. We took advantage to some sales and did a few rides around the beach areas. On one day we went to Galilee, which is a port with lots of fishing boats and birds. I spotted a hawk on a pole, that was being harassed by a group of crows. He sat long enough for a photo before he got tired of the harassment.

Image

Around the area I spotted a few Blue Herons and lots of seagulls. The Herons looked like they wished they had gone south.

Image

We sat at the docks and enjoyed the views from the car. This building is one that they process the incoming catches of the day. Their idea of a Christmas decoration.

Image

Then we stopped at the fishing area and walked up the hill to enjoy the views.

Image

At another beach, we enjoyed the views across the bay.

Image

Another day we did some areas to look for Snow buntings, none found but I spotted a large group of Lapland Longspurs.

Image

At home our feeders are always busy. Some will stay still long enough for a photo and others, grab a seed and take off. Snow and cold, always brings in more visitors and it is a nice way to find joy on cold winter days. I hope everyone has a wonderful new year, filled with joys and good health.

Friday finish!

I hope every one had a nice holiday. We had a nice time, even though everyone was still sick. The good thing was, we didn't have to worry about getting sick or passing it along, we already did.

I rested when I could and made up a couple of stitcheries to work on, I finished one. This is one of my designs from the Christmas booklet. A lot of my designs can be changed into stitcheries, even though I made them for rugs or punch needle. I added glitter paint on the star, for a fun touch.

Image

We got out for a few rides, but not as many birds at the ponds. The winter ducks are coming in and even Pelicans have been spotted at the wharfs, so hoping we can get down there before they leave. I was able to spot a Red-shouldered Hawk one day. He flew right in front of us and landed on a post.

Image

We enjoyed our time with the kids. We had dinner at our house on Christmas Eve and the kids got their main present along with others, then we spent the next day at their house and I saved some for them to open then.

Image

The boys got instruments, Alex was trying out his trumpet and Nick got an electric guitar, but I didn't get a shot of him.

Tonight we are getting snow, so hoping it will be clear tomorrow so we can go out for a ride, to enjoy seeing everything covered in white. I hope you all enjoy your weekend.

Holiday Finish!

I was able to finish my Christmas quilt, just in time. I machine quilted the edges around the blocks and then I hand quilted around the mittens with black and used white in the patterned blocks. I didn't use any pattern, just made up a mitten template and used a variety of wool textures. It was a fun way to use up wool and some fun fabrics I had gotten, last year.

Image

Last weekend we went to the mill to pick up corn meal. I spotted this guy, outside of the mill.

Image

We also made a stop at the thrift store. This store always has fun things and great prices. I found fun snowmen to add to my collection.

Image

And a nativity set, that I couldn't resist.

Image

After some shopping, we drove around the salt water ponds and I spotted this guy. He was busy fishing, so he didn't mind me, taking photos.

Image

Yesterday we went to the island and walked on a few beaches and around the lighthouse. Lots of Common Eiders and a few Harlequin ducks, braving the surf for a meal. A Downy Woodpecker was enjoying the berries at one parking lot.

Image

We also got to spend time with the kids. Mom and dad went shopping, so the boys stayed with us. While here, we did a family shoot so Ivy could sent photos to her family in Malaysia. This was one of my favorites, the background is AI generated.

Now it is time to get ready for Christmas. We have the kids on Christmas Eve and go to their house on Christmas. I hope you all have a wonderful holiday, in whatever way you may celebrate. May you find peace, love and joy in the coming days.
