When I was 14, my dad and stepmom had me taken from my bedroom in the middle of the night and transported to a wilderness therapy program where I spent months outdoors in the Georgia summer heat.
At the time, I did not have any behavioral, academic or mental health issues. The real reason was that I preferred to live with my mom and resisted their control. They reframed that into a problem that needed to be "fixed." Years later, I obtained the records that showed there was no indication for involuntary inpatient treatment.
As an adult, and after forgiving them, I developed a serious chronic health condition and my dad and stepmom chose to go no contact with me.
I'm open to answering any questions about what happened and the aftermath. AMA.
