Often distributions don't allow major upgrade to be made live... and Lite Upgrade tells me I'm running the latest version, but it's a 4.8.

Note that it's a 100% fresh install so I don't mind trying and breaking before having to reinstall in case it goes wrong.

EDIT : Answer is NO, going from any version prior to 5.0, to 5.0 and up needs a clean install**.**

When typing nothing shows up until I click off the text box.

I was messing around with the file manager and got rid of the top bar (the one that as the edit, view and so on), can some one help me bring it back?
