- Happy Birthday to Emmett Till. He would've been 83 years old today. At just 14, two white men kidnapped and brutally murdered him through mutilation for 'whistling' at a white woman. decades later, Carolyn Bryant admitted to lying that Emmett Till made a pass at her. THREAD
- If the child on the left was old enough to pick cotton and the child on the right was old enough to attend Klan rallies, then today's children are old enough to learn about both of these and how they've led us to where we are today.
- On this day in 1959, 69 black boys were padlocked in their dormitory at school and it was then set on fire. 21 burnt to death while 48 managed to escape. A THREAD.
- On this day in 1955, Claudette Colvin,15, was arrested for refusing to give her seat to a white woman on a public bus in Montgomery, Alabama. She was arrested 9months before Rosa Parks, but NAACP didn't want her to represent their organization because she was 15 and pregnant.
- Lonnie Johnson, NASA engineer, invented the Super Soaker. He made your childhood hot summers fun. He turns 76 today. Happy Birthday!
- On this day in 2008, Obama was elected President of the United States.
