Before spreadsheets and decision models, the Levant had proverbs. Each one compressed centuries of experience about power, timing, loyalty, and survival. I wrote a short book unpacking 12 of them. The wait is over (at least, for me): sodiumninja.gumroad.com/l/NavigateRisk…

After the fall of the Soviet Union, I feared that those who won the war would gradually and imperceptibly metamorphose into Soviet style entities. This is certainly the case of Western Europe & a present threat to the foundations of the U.S.

The only two historians that have emerged during this period as true historians are @DalrympleWill and @peterfrankopan . I will continue reading/ buying their books (blindly) and decided to stop reading/buying others who have been silent or worse, engage in propaganda.

The argument by @simonmontefiore has the rigor of mascarpone soaked in underground Kabul-made vodka. He is implying that Ireland doesn't like genocide BECAUSE it is committed by Jews, as if they wd accept it if committed by Ingush. Plus selection bias w.r.t. past events.

When I was fresh out of college, I thought of “managers” as a “success” in corporations. Then I discovered a breed of people who don’t have titles & barely anyone knows about but make more money than “managers”. As NNT said, at the end of the day, just impress ur accountant.

Etymological fun fact that backs up what @nntaleb said: “Compete” comes from Latin competere — to strive together. Nothing in its roots suggests making someone else lose.

AN ENEMY is someone in a zero-sum game, the representation bureaucrats, geopoliticians, journos & low-IQ pol "scientists" have of the world. A COMPETITOR is someone who helps the system stay non-zero sum & prevents monopolies.

Oops. Busted! Just came across this aphorism and I feel bad: “They happily read Gibbons 'Decline and Fall' on an eReader, but refuse to drink Chateau Lynch-Bages in a Styrofoam cup” - @nntaleb in Bed of Procrustes Am I excused if Amazon delivery is a hassle where I live?
